    The view out the window

I really wanted to like this place, but unfortunately there were number of things that just soured the overall experience. The location of the hotel is great, near the water! General first impression inside the hotel is very good, the lobby is spacious and well appointed with a nice view of the water. A good amount of artwork in the hallways. It's obvious that a good bit of attention has been given to the common spaces, but the reality is that I never saw anyone using these spaces. The hotel had two elevators which were actually nice and large (larger than those in the vast majority of hotels) and they seem to work quickly. The first impression of the room was also good, nothing big or special, but perfectly adequate for a mid priced hotel. However the problems and issues with the room became very obvious upon closer inspection. The first issue may seem tiny, but the TV was definitely small by today's standards and given the low cost of TVs I don't understand why the rooms are not provided with adequately sized TVs. Certainly made watching TV while sitting in bed a challenge and there was nowhere else to sit to watch TV. The second item to mention is the little pseudo-kitchenette. Maybe at first glance it seems nice, but without a sink it's really just a small bit of counter space and storage. I think a sink would really have been helpful given the small size of the sink counter space in the bathroom. And the final and most important observations in the room were in the bathroom. A non-functioning bathroom fan and black mold over the shower! I don't know about anyone else, but I don't see how visible mold can ever be acceptable! I guess the non-functioning fan would certainly explain some of the moisture problems in the bathroom. And while I did not use the bathtub, I would like to point out that it seemed very small - maybe adequate for a child, but certainly not big enough for an adult to take a soak. I would like to also point out the the AAA rate is not what they charge for the room, they add another $7 a day for parking which seems really inappropriate to me given their location - it's not like the hotel is downtown in a major city. Finally I would like to highlight that they are not providing a breakfast buffet as other hotels on my travels are currently doing. This was a major disappointment! You are now forced to select from a limited breakfast menu and the food is delivered outside your door in the early morning. Now maybe some might consider this an attempt by the hotel to make reasonable accommodations given today's environment, but I don't see it that way. The actual amount of food that was provided was VERY small - tiny sandwiches, and no coffee at all!! Now I'm not looking to overeat, but it really seems like the hotel is just doing this as a way for the hotel to save money on breakfast. This seems unfortunate given the room rates. I had heard that this hotel was recently renovated - I don't know if that's accurate or not. But my overall impression is that they skimped on the hotel construction or renovations, and they are also doing the same when it comes to maintenance. There seemed to be little or no sound insulation between rooms based on the noises coming from other rooms. I also had a lamp with obviously a three way switch, but a three way bulb was not provided. I know that's a small item, but as far as I'm concerned it's the details that make or break a place. I don't know if management is unaware of these types of problems in their hotel, or if they simply don't care, but either one is unacceptable to me and certainly won't earn my repeat business.

This is a nice hotel with spacious rooms. We selected to stay in the Queen waterfront suite because it had a full kitchen. I have food allergies and have to make most of my food instead of eating out. You would think if they have a full kitchen they would also have pots, pans, utensils, cups etc. Instead we found four plates, 3 cups, 3 spoons, 2 butter knives, 1 fork and 1 prep knife. For a family of 4. Absolutely no cooking utensils, pots or pans. I inquired at the desk and a nice lady found a few pots and pans for me. I asked for a spatula or tongs and a gentleman immediately stated they didn't have those and I could order door dash to deliver a spatula to me. My husband asked for at least 3 more forks, so we could eat breakfast and he was told he couldn't get them due to covid? He did find enough plastic forks that so we had to wash and reuse all weekend. Overall a nice clean place to stay, just would expect better service for the cost of the stay.

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Atlantic Beach Oceanfront - Guest room

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Atlantic Beach Oceanfront

DoubleTree by Hilton Atlantic Beach Oceanfront…read more I used electronic check-in, though I did stop by the front desk briefly to ask where the restaurant was before heading over for dinner about 40 minutes before closing. I'll cover that experience separately. Overall, the hotel delivered a solid stay. The room--707, oceanfront--was clean for the most part and well-equipped with everything you'd expect: refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker (filter-style pods), ironing board, hair dryer, and a television. Lighting is excellent, with plenty of lamps throughout the room, and there are ample AC outlets along with modern USB and USB-C ports, which is a nice touch. One feature that stood out was the small table with two chairs. It made a big difference since I ended up bringing dinner back to the room, and having a proper place to sit and eat comfortably is something not every hotel gets right. The room itself was spacious with a balcony overlooking the ocean. The view was great, and the setup made it easy to relax and enjoy the beachfront atmosphere. There was nothing wrong with the room--it was a solid, comfortable oceanfront stay. Parking is plentiful and free, which is always a plus in a beach area. One thing to keep in mind for this stretch of the coast: it tends to stay windy. Be prepared for strong winds and quick temperature changes, especially if you're spending time outside on the balcony or walking along the beach. Overall, a good, reliable oceanfront stay with the conveniences you want and a comfortable setup for relaxing by the water.

Fast forward this a few years…read more I've probably stayed here on five or six occasions during summer, fall and winter. Like many have said, and it's the truest thing you can say about this hotel, you cannot beat the location and there is nothing in the immediate area which compares to it in that respect. Out the back door and there is the beach along with plenty of parking. Good/Bad/Ugly Time: Good: As mentioned prior, you cannot be the location. Having the balcony door open at night to the sound of the ocean is nothing short of perfect. When they have their outside beach bar open that's also not too bad for the view and the ambiance. No issues with any of the staff here over the years. If you're so inclined you can walk to the bar across the street (The Wheelhouse) or On the Rocks or slightly further is a very well stocked Dollar General that's only a few years old. It's also a short drive to The Food Lion, a McD's, ABC store and a few others. The key is to ALWAYS watch the hours of operation or else you will find out the hard way that McD's will close at 8pm or the better of the two pizza places in town is only open 4pm-9pm. It's not the end of the world as there are far more choices over in Morehead City. Bad: Yeah, the place is definitely dated. I believe it started life as a Sheraton in the late 80's and I think the AB area and the hotel have taken two fairly direct hurricane shots within the past 10-ish or so years. Am I willing to overlook the elderly quirks (although they are on board with Hilton's new streaming TV requirement)? Yes, without question but if you come expecting new/hip/modern, it's not happening. Also, plenty and I mean plenty of people are smoking various things on their balconies or in the hotel's outside courtyard area. If that is going to bother you.......I can't help you on that one. Ugly: Most of the food they serve simply isn't very good and/or it's not uncommon to find they are out of various menu items from their small menus or drinks from their small drinks list. If you have the F&B credit to play with, I guess do what you need to do but aside from maybe a burger at the outside beach bar, don't do it. Overall, whatever, I like this place because I love the area. It's truly a beach/area for beach lovers who want a quiet/pure/simple experience that's 180 of the crap in Myrtle/OCMD or anything in Jerz. Overall, God-willing, I'll be back.

And yet, of all the places I have been, few can match the charm and service of this wonderful couple and this establishment. "Charming coastal" is indeed accurate as another reviewer noted, but so is kind and engaging. At least, that is how I found the host Kim, who is the hostess during your stay. The rooms are modest in size but well appointed and comfy with a wonderful balcony to enjoy a morning coffee and watch the city wake up. The highlight of each morning was the breakfast together. The breakfast is served at 9 sharp and is served with the other guests. It makes for not only a delicious breakfast, but Kim uses it as an opportunity to help direct, guide, and suggest places nearby that meet your interests. This is great as it means you get insider tips and ways to optimize your stay by taking the guesswork out--particularly when you have a small window for activities (we were only there for a few days). In the evenings, Kim hosts a happy hour which includes helping guests secure reservations and dinner plans settled before you go. This is not just a recommendation by Kim--she actively calls and secures the spots and confirms them with you. True concierge service! Setting aside the wonderful host and the rooms, the location is superb. We were there over the weekend, and there is a delightful Saturday market literally ACROSS the street filled with vendors of all varieties. Warming: it is easy to spend. ;) The entirety of the downtown is merely a block away with shops, restaurants, and bars galore along with the cruises, sports fishing, and recreation just a short walk down the road. Bottom line: I adored this place and have already recommended it to friends and family here in Durham (where we live) and beyond. If you can swing it (it is worth every penny) and want to give yourself or your partner a weekend to remember, I cannot more strongly recommend the Inn on Turner.

There was gook on the office chair; fingerprints all over the door including the lock plate as well as orange stains on the wall and light switches. Someone isn't doing the bare minimum of cleaning. The restroom was the grossest. The shower had several hairs belonging to someone else; the shower walls were dirty; and the area around the show had a buildup of gunk and dust so I don't think that area in the room had ever been cleaned. The shampoo; conditioner and soap containers were not filled. To make the stay worse my room was noisy as it overlooked the pool and was outside of the elevator so I heard every conversation and commotion that occurred in the hall area. Breakfast was to be ready by 6:30am but it wasn't. The woman in charge was complaining about missing items from a locked refrigerator and seemed upset that people were consuming the food and beverages. Isn't that the point of breakfast. I will not stay at this Holiday Inn again.

Things are new, they're still finishing up some small things as Covid and red tape slowed reconstruction. My room was clean, I appreciated the tile floor vs carpet, my personal preference. The staff was friendly and helpful. Due to Covid they aren't offering a hot breakfast like they normally do, but have wrapped pastries, fruit, cereal, coffee, tea, reheatable sausage biscuits, etc that you can bag up and bring back to your room. Normally would have eggs, sausage/bacon, pancakes. At other times they have a small retail area with sodas, juice, snacks etc for purchase as reasonable prices. There is a small fitness center that I forgot to take a picture of, a guest laundry with one large washer and dryer. They do have a meeting room for guest use, not sure what the restrictions are during Covid times. It's located near a CVS, Walgreens, Gas station, several bank branches, and a supermarket within walking distance. I would definitely stay here again.

I love that all of the rooms are oceanfront and the property is not too big. The room was clean and perfect for a couple to have a quiet intimate stay at the beach. The bathroom was a little too small for my liking, however it's a small concern. The internet is the worst of any place I have EVER stayed at in my life. I tried to do some work and I finally gave up due to no internet reception. Then my television continued to go out after midnight. There is no one at the front desk during that time according to my attempts to call the front desk. The staff is SUPER friendly!!!! When I checked in, when I went to the restaurant, and when I checked out, I was met by the friendliest, accommodating staff members. I really appreciated that. The restaurant is very nice, however the food quality is not good at all. I ate there my first night and ordered the wings, garden salad, and shrimp po boy. I was also given a complimentary order of collard greens. The food was not seasoned and the nothing seemed fresh tasting. I had to return my salad due to molded, slimy veggies. My waiter was a champ. He was very apologetic and took the salad off my bill when I returned it. I can see me returning for a relaxing time at the beach. I would recommend this hotel to others.

It's a bizarre time to be reviewing most things because Covid has obviously thrown off the "normal" into many shades of grey. With that said, take this one with a grain of salt as it's only a brief snapshot in time for how things are now. In another month or two, who knows? Let's start with the good: The location to the beach couldn't be any better. Just a short walk and you're there. The hotel was sold out or near it every night we were there yet the beach area directly across the street was never busy. The same as last year with seeing the same families and people every day more or less set up in the same spot very spread out from each other. All Covidly perfect. Not so good: Hilton Honors benefits at check in are still a no here, just like last year. The beds are extremely squeaky. Any sitting/moving = high pitched squeaking. The hotel is not following the new Hilton/Lysol cleaning protocol that started a few weeks ago. No stickers on the room doors or verbiage anywhere on property. I was told at check in that if you want your garbage taken to have it in the hallway early in the morning so that housekeeping could grab it and that the only way to get fresh towels or any bedding was to stop a housekeeper in the hall with your old stuff or bring your old stuff with you to the front desk since the hotel was running extremely low. Is the hotel's linen par really that low? Is the smell of that much garbage-food in the hallways overnight a good idea? Our room was dusty/sandy when we checked in and the a/c unit was filthy. No way were either cleaned thoroughly in a while. But since there was no daily housekeeping and with the hotel being sold out the day we checked in... If you want a hotel that has a great beach location that is out of the way and quiet, this is it. Past that, things were on the dirtier side in general and I question any place not following the new cleaning protocol. Time to give this one a rest for a bit.
