Looking bewildered and mentioning the time (again 440p) we told him that we live an hour and a half away and that it was our wedding anniversary, and his response 'ohhhhh no'.. No explanation as to why he closed a full 20+ minutes early (he was already outside and getting into his truck) nor an offer to open up for the final 20 minutes; then he got in his truck and left. It was massive, had a massive…read moreparking lot, had a gas station with reasonable fuel prices, was out of carrots (okay, that might be an outlier), had clean bathrooms and an overall presentable store, had employees who are overworked and protect their time by avoiding eye contact and being utterly indifferent to customers, and this one has a liquor store (Illinois is reasonably flexible with its licensing laws) that apparently one must check out from separately to avoid cross-contamination between wholesome groceries and sinful booze. (I'm speculating on that last part.) The beer selection in the booze store was on the suboptimal side, but any port in a storm when you're on the way to the hotel after driving a million hours.
