Yesterday, when I was prepping to install curtain rod so that I can hang a curtain in my apartment (yes, I left the apartment sans curtains for nearly four months after I moved in...), I realized I didn't have a drilling bit for my electric drill and a screw driver. I knew Bartunek was three minutes walk from my place so I decided to get help there. Since it was my first time DIY-ing and I had close to no idea what I was doing, I just brought my mini drill and the anchor and showed them to the people at the Hardware store. I came in kind of overwhelmed with a tiny power drill and must have looked like a lost kid. But staff were really helpful and when I told them I'm a beginner, the guy told me some tips on drilling, which helped a lot. I was able to get both items at a fair price and left the store happy. I see some people pointing out that staff here don't wear masks. Since I was too focused on the drill, I failed to check if the staff had masks on (however, I'm pretty sure the female staff had her mask on. Not sure about the guy though). In the case staff weren't wearing a mask, it is concerning. I had my mask on so I'm ok, but I hope their staff don't end up getting sick for their own good. read more

I called the place to see if they had what I needed and the guy that answered the phone told me that it was too much trouble to go and check the prices and then come in. I told him I didn't travel all that just to find out that he didn't have what I needed at the price I needed it to be as I was buying something for someone else and it was business related. I traveled anyway and though they had what I needed they didn't have as many as I needed. I asked twice for three packages of something and the guy was either stoned or too dumb to bring me three packages. He brought me two and then went back for the third and realized that he hadn't brought me a third one because there wasn't a third one so he brought me another package that had the same amount of pieces in it, but it was nine dollars and he had already charged me $15. 75. I told him it was fine as long as he gave me the equivalent of what I paid for. He couldn't do math in his head so either his or his boss came out and they were upset with me for wanting him to give what I already paid for. at first, they discussed taking it back on the card and then recharging which would've been fine with me, but both of them were too stoned or lazy to do that, and then the owner told me never to come back as he threw the value of what I paid for the bag. I asked him did you really just say that to another had come in he said no I that. But he had repeated it twice. He's going to get what he wishes for. I will never go back to that store. Not to mention the store was so small that the clerk could've stepped out from behind the counter for 30 seconds and found out what I asked to begin with before I walked all the way there. read more

The store is decently stocked for a small, local outfit, and the staff has been helpful the few times I was in there. But. They're never masked at all, and when I was in there this morning, the guy behind the counter was talking a whole bunch of garbage with someone hanging out there - also unmasked - about how COVID-19 is not a big deal, how it's just a "bad flu," and bunch of conspiracy nonsense about how it's all just a means of control, or something. Obviously, the business as a whole can't be held responsible for the beliefs or behavior of every single employee, but it's obvious due to the lack of masking that those beliefs and that behavior are accepted and endorsed there. As someone who knows more than one person who's died from this disease, and who had it 8 months ago and is still experiencing problems because of it, I take it really seriously, and I believe businesses that want to be a part of the community should, too - if not for the sake of their own employees, then for the sake of their customers. As a few of the reviews below mention, the people who work here don't wear masks inside, and they seem to not really like people who do. I guess you can draw your own conclusions from that. When it comes to a local shop, this is about as anti-home depot as it gets. It's a small hardware store located along 23rd Avenue, a street where the hustle and bustle become more likely as days go on. Though Bartunek may not have a everything most mega hardware places would have, they are limited to the basic essentials of hardware variety. In terms of their inventory, I feel some of the stuff here is a bit spendy. Not going to put my finger on any particular item, but $6 for a roll of duck tape or $8 for a box set of assorted screws feels like a lot. I suppose that comes with the territory of purchasing such items. The guys who run this place are very knowledgeable about all sorts of tools and are experts in determining what goes with what. I just with their phone manners and in house service was more friendly. Another thing on my wish list is that they closed later than 6PM. I'm never going to be able to visit here during work hours. read more

I was walking home from the train and needed something for my garden hose (which they had) and looked around...this place had everything you'd need from a hardware store...paint brushes, keys made, brackets, garden supplies, tape...basically everything the bigbox stores have....AND IT'S A LOCAL BUSINESS IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD. I have had bartunek hardware save my ass on more than one occasion. Lock broken, drain clogged, snowed in, they have everything I need and at more affordable prices than Home Depot. The best thing about them, however, is their deep commitment to service. They are extremely helpful and go above and beyond, and have never upsold me even though I'm a clearly oblivious patron of home repairs. The most recent time, I went in to buy soldering supplies to attempt to fix a disconnected wire on a $250 robot vacuum. The cashier rightfully suspected I was about to injure myself, and they were able to repair my vacuum for me in the store right there. It took 5 minutes and only cost $9. They could have just sold me the $25+ worth of stuff and said a prayer for me, but they really helped me and saved me so much time and agony. I'm really grateful to have such an honest, quality hardware store so close to home. It's rare to find such integrity today, and I hope Bartunek remains an Astoria fixture forever. read more

Even though there was another person working there that felt bad and tried to fix the situation, the damage was done. I was yelled at, insulted and disrespected for no reason. They were polite in sharing they don't have the tools to create a custom hole for what's needed but helped figure out a cheaper option and where to get it done! Bartunek used to be an excellent store; I shopped there, on and off, for years. The old owner was great; prices were very reasonable. But when I came there a few days ago and asked why a quart of Rustoleum paint (which I was buying) was priced so high, the young owner, who was acting the part of a salesman, told me that high prices come "from Biden" and gave me a ten-minute rant on why it was necessary to vote for Republicans to get paint at lower prices. That same day at Bartunek, I also asked to show me a small roller for painting railings, and the same young owner-salesman advised me to buy a painting mitt instead. This was bad advice: the painting mitt left an enormous number of clots of lint on my railings as soon as I had begun painting them; I had to throw away the mitt after 15 minutes of use. When I came in and told the young owner-salesman what happened, not only did he not offer an apology, he continued with his rant blaming Biden for high prices. I told him that I hadn't come in to hear him pontificate on politics; he paid no attention to my objections and just went on. I will never go to Bartunek again. Locked out? CALL THIS PLACE. I called five places to help me out when I did that dummy thing where I locked the door behind me BEFORE checking to see if I had my keys. Every other place quoted me $75-$125 to start - adding in that shady BS about "depending on how difficult the lock is" etc. etc. This place - $45 for a lockout. Why so much cheaper? Not cheaper, inexpensive. Because they don't want to take advantage of you. Seriously. I know, hard to believe right? This is a neighborhood store that prides itself on being a neighborhood store. So yes, the price was great and then they wanted to know what time would work for me. This meant I didn't have to leave work in the middle of day on top of being a bonehead. I met up with them at 5:30, Anton busted his ass to open my door while being super friendly, and now I know to leave a spare set of keys at work. I hope I never have to call him again but if I do, at least I know it will be an incredibly pleasant experience. read more

This is a local business that has been in Astoria for decades (I seem to remember reading that they opened in the 1920s, but I could be wrong). My parents and grandparents came here when I was a kid, and I have come here from time to time as an adult. My main reason to go here has been to have keys copied. Their locksmith is great, and the prices are cheap. The place is small, and, yeah, you'll probably have to go to a Home Depot or Lowe's for larger items. However, they have a pretty good selection. While there, I've picked up caulking, screws & nails, tools, and a whole bunch of other hardware. The people who work here are knowledgeable and nice, a wonderful combo!!! So, if you need new keys, or some hardware for a home project, definitely stop by here first and check out what they have. I've never been disappointed!!! read more

I went in looking for some steel wool to fill holes I have around my apartment. Easy enough, and it was at an okay price. But I figured while I was there I would ask about what they have that would cover a hole for a wall air conditioner. The gentleman who was "helping" me looked as though that was the most ridiculous question he'd ever been asked. Fine. Maybe it was, it felt reasonable to me. So I go to check out. I ask if they take debit cards. The guy stops in his tracks, and in a remarkably smug manner says, "No. Cash only" with such an obvious expectation that I would not have cash. It felt as though they thought highly of themselves for only taking cash. I never thought a hardware store could be that pompous. So, I remove the exact change from my wallet and hand it over. I ask for a receipt, which was a clearly a huge inconvenience for him. Nothing worse than feeling like an inconvenience when patronizing a store. I apologize for interrupting your day and very important gentlemanly conversations to hand you exact change in cash. I'll be traveling further for better service in the future. read more

This is a charming little neighborhood hardware store with great selection and even better service. Not really sure why locksmiths in Astoria get little love on Yelp, but here's to changing that! I needed a couple of keys copied for my new apartment. I Yelp-ed "locksmith" and out of the five shops located nearby, I rolled the dice and chose Bartunek. I totally lucked out -- the employees behind the counter were quite friendly and professional. They made all the copies for me in less than a minute, which was so much quicker than expected. Not only did each copy cost just a buck, the keys actually work! On top of that, while perusing the store I found a quality shower rod and set of hex keys for dirt cheap. With all the headaches and rigors that come with moving in to a new place, it was refreshing to have such a pleasant and efficient experience at Bartunek. I came in not really knowing about this place and not really knowing what I needed. What I knew was that I was in a jam with a stripped screw at work and needed to get it out. The father and son duo was an incredible treat on this 8 am run! I explained my situation and they took the time to not only help me but explain step by step what I needed to do! And they threw in some extra screws to help me out :) At the end I was able to come into work and take out that damn screw! I love this store. The employees are always friendly and helpful, and you can talk to one person in one spot, who will tell you what you need to buy and how to use it. I'm a woman so I always need help in hardware stores - something that's not easy to find in places like Home Depot, where if you're lucky enough to find somebody to ask for help, they probably won't be able to give you any practical advice. So for me, if there is something I can get either here or Home Depot I will always choose to come here and support a local business and deal with ppl who actually know what they're doing. read more

This place is an Old School Hardware Store run by guys who Know Their Stuff, hardcore!! They have everything that anyone could ever need to maintain/do emergency repairs on any of the old, run-down buildings in the area (like mine) and they will guide you on how to go about solving any problem. They won't try to upsell you either and are VERY VERY helpful. Over the years, with their help, I have fixed a leak under my sink, fixed my toilet, re-taped my showerhead (plumber's tape), fixed a seal on my radiator, replaced the flourescent bulbs in my kitchen, gotten flypaper (got a batch of bananas once that was beyond infested), gotten glue traps (mice from construction next door) gotten new window screens, caulked stuff up, and gone through tons of workmen's painted gloves (great for lifting stuff). BTW the painted gloves--cheap cotton gloves whose palms and fingertips are covered in rubberized paint--are a steal at something like $2 a pair. This place also cuts keys really well. They have bizzaro hours, but a lot of their business is in the AM when the trade comes through, or people on the way to work. VERY nice, helpful guys who will really help you get the job done. read more
