One must fly to Paris occasionally to secure all the French goods, like cheese, Chanel, macaroons, beauty products and more and I right? I'd bookmarked Barthélémy when looking for new places to enjoy for a recent solo visit of mine then coincidentally my bff recommended them to me a few days later mentioning Ina Garten loves this cheese store, so I knew it was a must. When you walk through the door you will feel what it feels and smells like to have entered cheese heaven! You will say Holy Cow!!! pun intended but it's not all cow, it's goat, and sheep and everything your little cheese loving heart could desire. This is the most gorgeous cheese store. I have my favorites here in the states... Murray's, Cowgirl Creamery, Rogue Creamery and many others but I was ready to dive right in to the delish French options here. I was greeted immediately and provided with superb service. I had no one particular thing in mind I simply wanted to purchase a whole bunch of everything. We spent a good amount of time going over many of the cheeses and I selected several to vacuum seal to bring home in addition to a couple to enjoy during my stay in France. An incredible fromagerie experience! The employees were so helpful in helping us find some delicious cheeses--and a delicious salted butter to boot! They offered several samples for us to try prior to making our purchases, which we appreciated a ton. We also appreciated that the cheeses spanned all kinds of budgets; we got a budget-friendly soft cheese and splurged a little bit on an aged one. Definitely recommend stopping by! read more

So glad old-school cheese stores like Barthélémy still survive... Staff is super knowledgeable and they have specialities from all regions of France. Go for any of their stinky unpasteurized cheese. Mont D'or à la cuillere, or this epoisses-like cheese from Lorraine (very strong... and I am a French strong-cheese lover) are great options. Glad we tasted the Fontainebleau as well. On the other side of the 'cheese spectrum' of course. The selection is tremendous and the knowledge shared priceless (for rock bottom prices, go in a supermarket, your loss). I was so excited to come here and was not in the least bit self-conscious after having very positive experiences at a number of other highly touted cheese shops. This was such a let down and possibly the low point of our time in Paris. We weren't even afford a moment to look around and take it all in. The man working was quite aggressive in pushing us along, immediately asking what we wanted. When I politely asked if I could take a look first, he rolled his eyes up and repeated "what do you want?". So I asked for a compte, and he asked me if the size he was going to cut was ok. I asked how strong it was and if I could taste it, which again elicited his eyes rolling up and he begrudgingly sliced samples for us. We said it was fine and he continued to hurry us through. I asked him to serve the woman who walked in behind us and he shook his head and pushed again. We needed up getting two other cheeses, of which type I don't event remember at this point, and spending nearly 30 euros in literally 5 mins. We asked for them to be vacuum-sealed so we can take them home; they could be the best tasting cheeses in the world but I'll still have a sour taste in my mouth from this store. Go to La Fromagerie on Rue Cler for by far the best experience. read more

Sure you won't have a red carpet rolled out for you, as an American, but who cares. Simply greet them in French, and try to show your passion for cheese - they'll come around. This is an old-school, family run joint, which is insanely serious about cheese. My wife and I stopped in to pick up some stinky unpasteurized blue cheese (which would be illegal in the US), truffle rabbola, fig spread, baguette, and wine to take back to our hotel room for lunch - it might have been the best lunch I've ever had in all of France. My days in Paris were spent a few ways 1. Wandering parks and the metro, bread and book in hand, being overly sentimental and weepy and pseudo-poetic 2. Visiting the typical tourist spots while pretending that i'm not ACTUALLY a tourist guyz 3. Eating. Cheese, macaroons, essentially whatever I could get my hands on. I would visit this shop two or three times a week and spend whatever I had on various assortments of cheese. The staff was incredibly helpful, and would let me sample whatever I wanted for however long I wanted. I'd stop there for half an hour, an hour, and they just didn't seen to give a damn that I was lazily lounging about their store. Nice. THE JAMS. The jam is great and I don't even particularly like jam. Yeah, get some jam. Thank me later. read more

WOW this place is fun. The employees made 2 great cheese recommendations. We got 4 of them. Our favorite was the Trappe Echourgnac, it is made by soaking the cheese in a walnut liquor and brine. It's also made by nuns!!! It was a semi soft cheese that was just sharp enough, not too funky, nutty, rich and amazing. It's unlike any cheese we had ever had, so unique, that is why you go to a store like this. We also got some goat cheese that my husband loved (I don't do goat). We got another semi soft cheese that was just way too funky for us and a hard cheese that was just a little too funky as well. The whole experience was so much fun, the store itself is so smelly its ridiculous. Some of the cheeses they have sliced up for you to taste, but let one of the employees assist you, they don't want you touching stuff. They will also slice off a piece of a large wheel. Also, I busted out my camera and started taking a couple pictures, luckily I got 2 inside the store before an employee scolded me. Whoops!! Anyways, this place is quite the experience, everyone should go. The employees like the stinkiest and strongest of cheeses, so just know that when they are making suggestions. Tell them you like more mild cheeses because they are used to stronger stuff in France. For instance, my favorite cheeses are a really good strong gouda or gruyere. That's about as strong as I want to go. My husband loves really strong blue cheeses, but even that one soft cheese they suggested was just too much. So if you are like me, be careful!! Definitely try them before committing. Despite getting 2 cheeses we didn't really like (we loved the other 2), this was one of our favorite experiences of the whole trip! We picked up the cheese, some bread at Poilane, wine and water from Bon Marche, and then we had a picnic in Jardin du Luxembourg. Super! read more

The quality of the cheese here is incredible. Hands down, fantastic fromage and you will not be disappointed. Try their camembert! The people who work there often rush you though, and as a foreigner (who speaks French) I do feel treated differently and am often advised the highest price cheeses, despite them knowing me as a regular by now. That can get really frustrating (and pricey!) week after week, so after about 3 months I stopped going here because of it. I knew about this cheese shop from Ina Garten aka Barefoot Contessa's recommendation on food network magazine. It didn't disappoint. Hubby loves cheese and this place takes cheese to another level. It was like cheese heaven. Service was attentive and friendly and we got home with several pounds of cheese (including ones with truffle of course!) and a sliced loaf of raisin bread from Poilane that they carry. They also have a wide variety of gourmet butter, yogurt, and cream cheese. Amazing store; will for sure return. read more

My favorite place in Paris! Allow the mongers to recommend their favorites and you can't go wrong. They are so kind and patient with my terrible French. The prices here are actually very good compared to what these types of cheeses would cost at cheese shop in the United States. I got 4 different cheeses, about 1 lb, for only around $20. That would have been about $30 - $35 at Whole Foods, and the variety and quality would not be in the same league. My 2 favorites: the artisinal Roquefort--the finest cheese I've ever had, and the Swiss Raclette. A visit to Barthelemy's is the sort of thing that truly makes a visit to Paris a success. The respect the French have for food is on full display here. A must-see! read more

If you don't speak French, don't bother, because they dont speak a lick of English, but the cheese is delicious, I just didn't know what to buy. The place has a crazy aroma of cheese, which was very unique. They do have samples so you can try some things. I had some kind of white cheese in a filo dough type of product.
