Barter for knowledge = cool concept!
    Katie U.

Alert the media! Trade School Indy is a hidden gem in our city that you definitely need to check out. Community members volunteer their time and talents to teach a diverse array of classes like pitching to the media, knitting 101, and Chinese medical wisdom. The class lineup changes each semester. Got a skill? Sign up to teach! Want to learn a skill? Sign up for a class, or submit a recommendation for a class topic. Trade School Indy is based off of a barter system. Your "payment" for the class is bringing in an item from the instructor's wish list. It could include the materials you need for the class, donating an item for a homeless shelter, or bringing in an idea written down. The system makes it as accessible as it can be for all to attend. For example, I took a pitching the media class with Leslie Bailey of the Indy Star and my contribution included bottles of body wash for a domestic violence shelter. Classes are held in the CCIC just north of Mass Ave. A plethora of free parking is available in the lot to the right. Enter the door directly to the right of Exodus Refugee and follow the yellow brick road (err, signs) to get to the classroom.

    Just follow the signs.

I had heard of Fletcher Place food pantry, but I didn't realize how much this location offers. Check it out: 1. Thrift store. People can come and shop around the store to score clothes, shoes, and household items for free. All clothes have been donated from the community and are sorted in the basement by volunteers. Clothing in the store is nice and any stained clothing is given to Salvation Army. Anything the Salvation Army can't use is given to a company in Canada that turns them into rags. Nothing is wasted and the thrift store staff says that their goal is for people to leave feeling better about themselves. That's why the store is so clean, organized, and friendly. 2. Preschool. There are two preschool classrooms for kids. Not only do they receive education, but teachers will pick out clothing from the thrift store for the children if they are not adequately dressed. Children then get to keep the clothes. There is also a large library that allows students to choose books from (to keep) each week. 3. Kitchen. The top floor has a large multi-purpose room that is often used for meals. Churches come in every day and donate food and cooking ability. No one is ever turned down from receiving food. An average of 120 people are fed every meal. The facility is super nice and always clean- but only with the help of volunteers. The building is also very secure and they always have plenty for volunteers to do. They also have an e-mail newsletter they send out about volunteer opportunities. *There is a big Christmas event in which you take families "shopping" throughout the building to get all necessities and Christmas presents. Very cool. They're looking for help* Check this place out if you've never been. They're doing great things!

Bring your clothes, blankets, shoes here, where they will be given away to people that really really need them. They also operate a free food pantry so you can bring food items for needy families. After donating a cart load of stuff, they gave me a receipt for tax purposes. On the way out I also noticed a community garden and produce stand that probably operates in the summer. My wife is a Girl Scout troop leader and they often come here to volunteer, sorting food items and helping to sort and display other donations.

The setup up was ok, but the announcers microphone was garbage. Most of the time, he couldn't be understood. The downside was definitely the parking, and a lot of cars were parked in muddy areas or forced to double park and block other cars in to get a spot at all. In the future, it would probably be best to park an hour early or plan to park at Churches Chicken or CVS to avoid the mess. GREAT JOB BWB

We spent an hour or so with her and another gentleman (who was very nice). We provided them with a ton of personal information just to be ghosted. We explained the seriousness of her situation. We were told it typically takes on average 21 days to get help but for my mother's situation it would be less. Ms. Maria never called my mother. My mother called at least every other day and left message after message just to never get a call back. About 2 weeks after I called myself and was able to reach her by getting transferred. She gave me a number to an apartment complex that she recently met with. I called them and they had a waitlist of 12 months and the rent was $1000. She knew my mother couldn't afford that so why even give us that info? And if she just met with them she would've known they had a waitlist. I felt like she didn't expect me to reach her and was just trying to get me off the phone. It's now September 26, 2024 and my mother has yet to receive a phone call from this lady. Based on our experience she doesn't care about "her seniors". It appears she just gathers personal info to create a case so they can say they are helping X number of people in the community to get funding. At the very least she could've remained in contact even if she didn't have an immediate solution. She could've returned a phone call, sent an email, or smoke signal SOMETHING! But instead she got my mother hopes up that she would pull through for nothing. Don't believe the hype about Ms. Maria. I will say everyone else there we came in contact with whether in passing or just in general was very pleasant. So I'm sure they help with other things but if you need senior assistance, this isn't the place.

They were constantly walking back and forth, checking things out, so I always felt like my kids were safe. 2. This indoor aquatic center is open year-round, so kids have a place to splash, wade and swim even when it's freezing outside. The day I visited, the water temperature was nice and warm, and the ambient air temp was just as inviting. 3. It's really inexpensive. Prices range from $4 to $6 dollars depending on age and the day you visit. Kids 2 and younger are free. 4. This is a small indoor water park, but it's big enough to have fun for hours. Now for the negatives: 1. This indoor water park is really old and in need of an update, and it shows. The playground structures in the water area are visibly rusted and look dirty. 2. The lock to the bathroom / changing room I was in DID NOT LOCK. It goes without saying that their changing rooms should have working locks. I had to stand by the door to block it, hoping that no one would try to come in! It also didn't have a trash can, for some reason. 3. The hallway to the changing room was super dark and didn't have any lights. Pretty much the last place you want to be changing in is a dark and creepy room. Fix the lightbulbs! This is another simple thing that could be fixed if they kept up the place. 4. They don't allow outside food or drinks inside the aquatic center. You can buy food and drinks at their snack bar, but when I was there (on a weekend), it was closed. Not sure what they expect visitors to do with a closed snack bar during operating hours. I like that Indy offers places like Indy Island so kids can enjoy swimming and playing in the water indoors. But this place is in need of some TLC in order to compete with some of the other indoor aquatic centers.
