We visited the JCC Aquatic center for the first time to attend a 2 hour dog dip event. I didn't get to see the entire center but the aquatic center itself was massive. The water was well maintained and there were pools of different heights starting from 1 all the way to 6 feet. It does look like it gets very busy in summer with all the classes. We had a great time at the center and enjoyed the expansive area which gave us ample privacy as well as a good time for interaction with other guests. I will definitely check out membership and prices for the next season!

Pro: Beautiful outdoor aquatic center with lazy river. Cons: rude, condescending front desk staff, disrespectful lifeguards and guest blackout dates. I paid $400 online for the outdoor pool membership just prior to visiting the pool with my sister who was in from out of town and my two children. My husband was out of town so I figured it would be no problem for her to take his place. It was a huge problem for them, as it was Fathers Day and guests werent allowed. I asked if she could be my 4th person since I paid for a family of four. No. We went to Broad Ripple pool. Second and third visits were great. Today on our 4th visit I brought my one son and his friend along. The woman at the front desk treated me like a criminal for even trying it, then questioned me for my son's membership card. He was never given one but I had my key ring card. Not good enough. She barked at me that the pool wasnt open until 12pm. It was 11:30am. I asked if I could use the bathroom, she said yes but that they wouldnt let us in the pool area because nobody was out there. She sternly told me I was only allowed two guest passes a year. Okay lady, calm down. My son peeked out and told me there indeed were people out at the pool, so I assumed the guards were letting people out. We went out and set up shop by the lazy river. A few minutes later a lifeguard told us we had to leave because they had a camp until 12pm. I shook my head and smiled and said okay. He went on to smart off a few more times, condescendingly telling me he knew how hot it was and if Id just be so good to go wait inside. I said, "we've got it, thank you" after about two more sarcastic remarks from him. He walked over to a table full of other lifeguards who looked at us and snickered. Pic attached. We found a bench outside the basketball courts to wait for the remaining 20 minutes and got to witness a camp counselor down the hall shouting "shut up, Marco!" Repeatedly. He caught my eye and looked embarrassed, as he should have been. So. $400. Beautiful pools. Four visits. A lot of bad vibes leaving us feel unwelcome. Update: no floaties in the deep end, where my 10 year old actually, you know, needs a floatie. Wow.

Our son swims weekly with the Joseph Maley Foundation, and this is one of the locations we use. There is always a lane open for him to swim laps, and it's pretty quiet in the lane pool. If you're lucky, you can snag one of the 2 chairs available. Otherwise, you're left with uncomfortable benches to watch from the sidelines. Employees we've encountered in the last year are also friendly and polite. Facilities seem clean. They also require ID check in of everyone that is a nonmember and have locker rooms specifically for underage guests/members.

The setup up was ok, but the announcers microphone was garbage. Most of the time, he couldn't be understood. The downside was definitely the parking, and a lot of cars were parked in muddy areas or forced to double park and block other cars in to get a spot at all. In the future, it would probably be best to park an hour early or plan to park at Churches Chicken or CVS to avoid the mess. GREAT JOB BWB

We spent an hour or so with her and another gentleman (who was very nice). We provided them with a ton of personal information just to be ghosted. We explained the seriousness of her situation. We were told it typically takes on average 21 days to get help but for my mother's situation it would be less. Ms. Maria never called my mother. My mother called at least every other day and left message after message just to never get a call back. About 2 weeks after I called myself and was able to reach her by getting transferred. She gave me a number to an apartment complex that she recently met with. I called them and they had a waitlist of 12 months and the rent was $1000. She knew my mother couldn't afford that so why even give us that info? And if she just met with them she would've known they had a waitlist. I felt like she didn't expect me to reach her and was just trying to get me off the phone. It's now September 26, 2024 and my mother has yet to receive a phone call from this lady. Based on our experience she doesn't care about "her seniors". It appears she just gathers personal info to create a case so they can say they are helping X number of people in the community to get funding. At the very least she could've remained in contact even if she didn't have an immediate solution. She could've returned a phone call, sent an email, or smoke signal SOMETHING! But instead she got my mother hopes up that she would pull through for nothing. Don't believe the hype about Ms. Maria. I will say everyone else there we came in contact with whether in passing or just in general was very pleasant. So I'm sure they help with other things but if you need senior assistance, this isn't the place.

Came here for their Ethnic (European, Scandinavian, Scottish, English, Greek, Latvian, Lithuanian,…read moreEastern European, etc) food and music event. Really laid back feel. The food was good especially the Polish pierogies stand. You can see how well handmade they were with a nice thin dough unlike the store bought ones. Most of the vendors took credit cards though oddly the only beer vendor did not. So if you want a beer you will need cash. They had "strolling" musicians which is a nice touch and not something you often see. The guy on the accordion was real good too! Same with the guy in a kilt playing the guitar. Lots of dancing demonstrations by the various ethnicities. The Italian fest was on the same day and while that event had lots of publicity on the local morning news for some reason they ignored this festival. Which is a shame as it was pretty good but it is probably not as well connected as the Italians. We bought our tickets in advance and it included parking. #357

I had heard of Fletcher Place food pantry, but I didn't realize how much this location offers. Check it out: 1. Thrift store. People can come and shop around the store to score clothes, shoes, and household items for free. All clothes have been donated from the community and are sorted in the basement by volunteers. Clothing in the store is nice and any stained clothing is given to Salvation Army. Anything the Salvation Army can't use is given to a company in Canada that turns them into rags. Nothing is wasted and the thrift store staff says that their goal is for people to leave feeling better about themselves. That's why the store is so clean, organized, and friendly. 2. Preschool. There are two preschool classrooms for kids. Not only do they receive education, but teachers will pick out clothing from the thrift store for the children if they are not adequately dressed. Children then get to keep the clothes. There is also a large library that allows students to choose books from (to keep) each week. 3. Kitchen. The top floor has a large multi-purpose room that is often used for meals. Churches come in every day and donate food and cooking ability. No one is ever turned down from receiving food. An average of 120 people are fed every meal. The facility is super nice and always clean- but only with the help of volunteers. The building is also very secure and they always have plenty for volunteers to do. Operations began at 4155 Boulevard Place in January 1973 as the Butler Tarkington Multi-Service Center. In 1977, it was relocated to 3951 N Illinois. In 1981, the name was changed to Martin Luther King Multi-Service Center and the service area was expanded. In 1984, a building was purchased at 3909 N. Meridian and, finally, in 1997, the current location at 40 W. 40th was acquired. Around 2014, the organizational structure was struggling quite a bit. If I remember right, the center was briefly closed to allow for a sort of organizational reset. This led to the hiring of Allison Luthe as executive director, a position she continues to hold to this day and she's most certainly massively rejuvenated the organization and its effectiveness. The MLK Center currently offers youth, family, and community programs. Youth programs include an after school literacy lab, the Best Buy Teen Tech Center, Tarkington Teen Work Crew, and 40 West Digital (training and work in video production). Family programs include wellness coaching (financial, employment, life), a parent support group, and loss and grief support group. Community programs include Midtown Get-Around (low-cost transportation within defined boundaries), Rent and Utility Assistance, shared lease program, a seniors program, mental health counseling, non-violence training, and loss/grief. The MLK Center will also rent space for gatherings (amazingly affordable). The MLK Center continues to be guided by six key principles from King's life: Nonviolence is a way of life for courageous people. Nonviolence seeks to win friendship and understanding. Nonviolence seeks to defeat injustice, not people. Nonviolence believes that unearned suffering is redemptive. Nonviolence chooses love instead of hate. Nonviolence believes that the universe is on the side of justice. Having encountered the work of the Martin Luther King Center several times over the years (I used to be even more supportive when there was an oratory program), I continue to regard it as one of Indy's best kept secrets for area children and youth and it has super blossomed under Allison Luthe's leadership.

I realized very quickly that this is something I could do to help give back to my community and give me a sense of purpose when all of my other volunteering opportunities were on hold. I quickly followed the links that took me to the Sign-Up Genius and secured my spot for that week. I arrived at the MLK Center headquarters with my face mask and gloves, and went inside to collect my bags of meals for that day. [COVID-19 UPDATE: That was just for that first week. They have since changed procedures to keep everyone as protected as possible. Now volunteers just line their cars up outside and other volunteers/staff load your car for you.] Inside the building, the office is clean and modest. There's a large meeting room, an even larger common area, a kitchen, and a separate activity room. Once my truck was loaded with my meals, I simply plugged the addresses from each sheet into my Google Maps app and followed my route. With each drop-off, I rang the door bell and stepped away. If no one answered, I called the number on the sheet, to let them know that the delivery was there on their porch. The staff is polite and hard working. I overheard that they're teaming with Second Helpings to put these meal bags together. I've often heard mention of the MLK Center in the news over the years, but until this pandemic, I've never had the chance to see up close and personal the impact them make on our community.
