My family stopped here in between our trip to LA after being recommended by my sister. If I go to any Jamaican food spot, I've always gotten curry goat, so I was really excited to be able to try this spot. I loved the sweet plantains that came with the meal, those always hit! The rice was very flavorful as well and perfectly cooked (I'm picky sometimes about the texture). I was very impressed by the goat as well! It was just as good as other places I've had Jamaican food; my only con would be I wish it was a little more tender, but that's just nitpicking. For anyone in the Bakersfield area or traveling from NorCal to Socal, I would recommend stopping here! It's just a small drive-thru in a parking lot, but it hits! The owners are also very sweet.
It's probably fair to compare this to a Panda Express. The food is a bit more unique, but it's the same principle. Pick and choose what you want. Get it served in a to-go container. The food quality and taste is good, but nothing is fresh. It's like eating leftovers from what you made earlier in the day. If you take a look at the kitchen, you'll notice that everything is just constantly being heated to be served at any time. Some of the items are microwaved. This place has a drive through window which makes it easy to pick up food and go. There are maybe two outdoor tables next to the shop which can suck if it's windy. There's no restroom available, so you'll have to go to a nearby restaurant (like the Wienerschnitzel) to wash your hands, etc.

Barrington himself said to go with the oxtail or jerk chicken so we got both. I really appreciated the fact that he took the time to stop what he was doing and speak to me after hearing i was a first time customer. He was genuinely curious and friendly which made it all the easier speaking to him. The oxtail was so good i had to call the restaurant back and say thank you. 10/10. Will be returning frequently.
Wanted to try jerk chicken for the first time with my daughter. We ordered the jerk chicken and veggie plate. The plate came with the jerk chicken, rice and beans, cabbage &carrots, and plantains. The jerk chicken was juicy, well seasoned, and delicious! The rice and beans were a nice compliment to the chicken. The plantains were fried to perfection! The cabbage and carrots were flavorful. The veggie plate had everything the jerk chicken plate except the chicken. The server at the window was very kind! Food was prepared quickly! The price of food was VERY reasonably priced! Lots of food! Will be making multiple future trips!
I was greeted with a smile and I let him know it was my first time visiting this place and he asked how did I hear about his establishment and I replied with I had a yelp event I attended where a lot of people where talking about the food and he smiled really big and suggested I get the jerk chicken and the curry chicken so I did. I absolutely feel in love with the chicken curry. It is so good. The rice is cooked perfectly, the bananas and the vegetables were too, and the flavor was so amazing, but omg, the curry flavor is just so good. The jerk chicken was also good, but for me, the winner was the curry. I will definitely be visiting this spot again.

Well my prayers were answered when I attended this years Village Fest! After a few (ok maybe 13 shots) of beer, I rounded the corner and spotted the longest line I'd seen all day. I figured it was for another shot of beer but when I went to the front of the line I was surprised to see the restaurant name I'd been eyeballing for about a year! I quickly ran to the end of the line and waited to get my small bowl of peas and rice, fried cabbage, jerk chicken, and plantains. The rice and peas and cabbage were kind of bland, but the jerk chicken and plantains were AMAZING!!! I can't wait to get a plate full of food when I finally visit!

I've lived in Bakersfield for a long time, and I've always been intrigued to try this place. Well I finally did, and I was just so sad and disappointed. I love Jamaican food and this was just not it. It lacked flavor, the meat was dry and did not fall off the bone. The rice had zero flavor. The plantains were dry and the cabbage side also had no flavor. Definitely needs to step up the seasoning-like by 100%! The service, however, was great, the owner assisted me and was very friendly and gave me a sample of the curry chicken which was ok- a bit juicier than what I ordered. It saddens me because I think this place has so much potential and Bakersfield definitely needs restaurants that represents different types of cuisine.

Barrington's is a drive-thru with 1 outdoor table in the parking lot of the Petsmart/Salvation Army/99 cent store. When I came for lunch there was a line of ~5 cars, but it moved quickly. I got the Jerk Chicken plate and it was so good. The chicken was perfectly cooked, and the seasoning was so flavorful. Plus the plantains were out of this world, and the steamed cabbage had a great kick to it. The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming too--they made my visit very special. If only I lived closer, I'd come here at least once a week! I'm already looking forward to my next trip to the area to visit Barrington's again!
Wow what a gem of a place. We came here years ago and honestly just such nice food and people. So good that we remembered it and came back when we were in the area. We got their jerk chicken and curry chicken plate. The red beans and rice were great and each of the chicken flavors were fantastic. This time, it came with a double portion of stewed cabbage rather than plantains and collard greens but they were so flavorful. All this food and a canned drink for $10, an unchanged price since 2018 is such a shock for this level of high quality food. 100% support this awesome local business. read more
Excellent Jamaican food kiosk in a shopping mall parking lot! My husband and I were driving through Bakersfield and wanted to stop for lunch. Barrington's fits the bill for a casual stop for good value! We came Saturday afternoon around 12 and I got the chicken curry and jerk chicken combo with rice, cabbage, and plantains for $10. What a steal! I really enjoyed the chicken curry which was a fall of the bone drumstick with amazing flavor. The jerk chicken was not as flavorful and not as tender. I would skip this next time. My husband got the combo of oxtail and goat curry, which we were told wouldn't be ready for 30 minutes. We came back around for his combo which cost a bit more ~$16. He loved the oxtail but though the goat curry fell a bit short. Overall, great value and good food. Get the chicken curry & oxtail (weekends)! read more

I ordered food on grub hub. Everything seemed to be fine and the order was 1 minute away when grub hub sent a message that my order was cancelled. I never got to taste anything from Barringtons.I do not think that it was Berringtons fault. I would love to try them out! read more

A small kisok in the middle of the plaza. I got jerk chicken, curry chicken, and goat meat because they were low on jerk chicken. Even though jerk chicken is their especialty, i liked the curry chicken more. The goat was kind of faty whoch i didn't like it much. They serve the plate with a generous amount of rice and black beans. It is a very good option for the price which comes with a can of soda. The lady who served me the food was very nice and had a beautiful smile on her face all the time. read more

Today I stopped by and tried their jerk chicken combo plate. The food was amazing. The chicken was tender and tasted good. The rice that comes with the chicken is seasoned and it has a little bit of sour taste which I really liked. The sides that come with the plate were also decent. Especially their seasoned steamed veggies are a must try. You get a free soda if you order a combo plate. Definitely coming back to this place to try their oxtail plate which they only sell on Fri-Sun. Overall highly recommended for a quick drive-thru order. read more

5/5 $15 oxtail plate: the oxtail is cooked with black beans and spices that make this order savory, tender, rich, and flavorful. This is served only on Friday, Saturday, Sunday. The plate comes with rice, cabbage, and plantains which are a much better deal than to get them individually. 4.5/5 $10 jerk chicken plate: smoky and sweet chicken. One of the most popular choices, and I can understand why. Barrington's Jamaican Kitchen is a hole in the wall serving up authentic Jamaican food. This is primarily a take out spot and there is a no frills outdoor bench with a gate if you want to eat there. I wanted to try the juices that are house made but I came too late into the night and they sold out. read more

This is like a one man show via drive thru and I'm so impressed!! Ordered a jerk plate and an oxtail plate. The jerk plate was pretty good a little dry but good seasoning. The oxtail was very very good. It was saucy and delicious and I really highly suggest it. Both plates came with red beans and rice and the most perfect plantains. I drive through Bakersfield often. This hidden gem came up when my husband and I were searching for something to pick up to eat in the car. What a find! The owner who served us was really sweet and kind. Very hard to beat the price as you get a lot-great bang for your buck here! The packaging of the food was also very well-done. They have a limited menu, which is great for someone like me who is indecisive haha! DRIVE-THRU: Very convenient! They're offering drive-thru only for COVID-19, otherwise they typically do have a window where you can walk up and order. I'm not sure if this is only during COVID, but they do NOT take phone orders. Service is really quick, so I wouldn't anticipate having to wait very long. ***ALL Plates and Bowls are served with Rice n Beans, Steamed Cabbage and Veggies, Fried Plantains, AND a drink (soda can, water)*** JERK CHICKEN PLATE $10: Their most popular dish! Known for their famous Jamaican grilled chicken that is marinated in Jerk spices for 24 hours before they're thrown on the grill and dipped in a Secret Sauce. The flavor of this chicken was great! Some of the bites were a little saltier than I would have liked (I'm used to not using much sodium at home), however very enjoyable and would totally order this again. Loved their fried plantains and rice with beans with the jerk chicken! AUNT CLAIR BOWL $6: Smaller portion than your plate. No flavor!! Plaintains taste weird! Rice and peas taste old, stew chicken has zero flavor, cabbage not horrible but two spoon fulls of it provided. Chicken patties were microwaved and rubbery. This was our last try with them. read more

This was my first time having Jamaican food and I am so glad this is the place I experienced! I am from out of town and was looking for local cuisine. When I saw the 5 stars on yelp for this place I knew I had to try it. I parked my car and was planning on walking up to the window, but the owner walked outside to let me know they have a drive through I can order from so I wouldn't be out in the rain! When I told him this was my first time having Jamaican food he gave me a sample of the jerk chicken. Wonderful customer service here and friendly staff! I felt very welcomed here. I got the jerk chicken and it was absolutely delicious! The flavors are bright and comforting! All around a great dish! I don't know what rock I was living under this whole time! I wish I was local so I can continue coming here. Loved the food! read more

Man oh man. This plate made me rethink my food choices. Best food I've had in so long. Makes me want to forget about the fast food spots. The meat just falls off and you can basically slerp it off the bone. The goat and chicken was so soft and tender. With such a unique taste to it. Something I've never tried before. Will keep coming back and make sure my friends and family know about this place. Also the man who I believe is the owner. Nicest person I've met in such a long time. Super humble as well. I want to remain true to my page and honest with my readers I'm giving them 4 starts mostly due to the customer service. I'm a little harder on Caribbean cuisine being a Caribbean man. The prices are another plus of this spot your not going find oxtails this low anywhere else in the bay. They were tender and seasoned Id give when a solid B- I'm not the biggest cabbage fan but I would have spruced up my recipe. The brown stew chicken is give a solid B + good flavors good gravy braised a little before being stewed down in the pot just enhances its flavor so well done. Fried plantains and rice and peas. How southern people feel about grits is similar to how we feel about rice and peas, the process takes longer to cook dried peas unlike canned which are already tender but what ends up missing when using canned peas is the rich reddish brown hue the rice soaks in. My suggestion is you your going to use canned peas just blend up enough to add to the cooking water so the rice gets that color you want to see also coconut milk and thyme. Ok spot with better customer service. read more

Nice quaint small, very small store in the middle of a parking lot, that serves good home cooked Jamaican food. We had a jerk chicken with fried plantain and fried rice and it was marvellous. No place to sit so you have to take out or there is a place outside but no indoor seating. But nevertheless a very good experience. One star less for the ambience or lack thereof. read more
