O'Keeffe's Groceries

O'Keeffe's Groceries

O'KEEFFE'S (13.01.10) Must admit I was a happy camper after…read morea recent visit to O'Keeffe's (St Luke's), a treasure trove of top class artisan foods. The produce is mainly local but one of my purchases was a pack of Hazer Baba Turkish Delight, all the way from Istanbul. Pistachio was embedded in the sweet sweet cubes and that made for a slightly more chewy version, more satisfying than the normal coated "jelly". Met some very satisfied diners this weekend. One couple had been at Market Lane, another in Kudos and a larger group at Tracy's in Ballincollig. Not so satisfied was a customer of BB's in Ballincollig who thought €2.80 was very expensive for a cup of Coffee-to-go; in addition "they were very slow". By way of comparison, Quiznos in Merchant's Quay, sells coffee for €1. Reference: grapes_of_sloth on Twitter. O'KEEFFE'S GROCERIES (11.11.09) O'Keeffe's of St Luke's are listed in the book as grocers but this is one of the best food shops around the city. It is a treasure trove. While all the usual foods are there, the emphasis is on the artisan food makers. Here you will find delicious home cakes and tarts, the breads baked by the nearby Arbutus Company, the highly rated products of Cully and Sully, the rich chocolates by O'Connail, the newly launched nougats by Pandora Bell (Limerick) and much much more. Hot food is also available and there is an in-store bakery, producing a beautiful line of French style products, including a crispy flaky croissant, "as good as any in France" as one happy customer reported to me today. Besides, there is an excellent wine selection. And it is not just finished products. Looking for ingredients? Then this store is worth a visit. At the moment, they have a selection of milled flour that you won't find in the supermarkets. Service is friendly and efficient and the only problem is parking. But the newly revamped St Luke's area, with its trademark toll-hut back in place, is worth a visit and this shop is worth a short walk from wherever you do find a parking spot.

Phoenix House

Phoenix House

A really terrible experience ordering with Phoenix House tonight…read more I had ordered previously with no issues, but tens minutes after placing the order on Just Eat I got a call from the delivery driver. I was expecting him to be asking for directions, but instead he was demanding that I pay 4 Euro extra cash on delivery. I explained that I had already paid for the entire order by card, including delivery charge and credit card. He said that because I lived so far away, it was going to cost extra on top what I had paid. I live less than 5km from the restaurant and in Cork city. I said that there were no extra delivery charges when I had ordered from Phoenix House (or other places from Just Eat) before. He responded angrily and started to complain that he didn't understand what other drivers had done and I had to pay him to deliver the food. I said I was not going to respond to extortion and I found his tone threatening. I explained that if delivery charges had increased then the restaurant should change the delivery price on Just Eat - its not my problem if the restaurant hasn't priced delivery correctly and not fair that I have to pay extra when I paid the full amount of the invoice in good faith. I told the driver that I didn't want the order and not to come to my home. The driver then responded saying that I couldn't not take the food because it had already been cooked. He went on to say that he would let me off the extra charge this one time. I said I didn't want anything to do with the order as I didn't trust him my food. The restaurant called shortly after to apologise. It is little comfort to know that someone unhinged has my name, address and phone number. Just Eat said they will refund my order, but they have lost my business permanently.
