ON THE PIG'S BACK
Finished off the Good Food Week Cork with a DIY pack. It wasn't widely advertised but On the Pig's Back in the English market were joining in the food fun with a €15.00 package of goodies, a nicely presented wrapped basket that included cheeses, salami and organic seeded bread.
Picked one up on Friday and am working my way through it, especially the bread and Milleens. Contents: Gubbeen Smokehouse Salami, Ardrahan Farmhouse Cheese, a dote of Milleens Farmhouse Cheese, and, from Dunmanway, a pack of organic wholegrain Emmental Cheese and Pumpkin Seed bread.

Recently, we tried to re-create a holiday experience from Normandy. The Marché in Bayeux was in full swing on a hot sunny day and we had no bother getting the famous Boudin Noir (black pudding). We also got some free-range eggs and put them together to form the basis for a lovely meal at the nearby gite.
We had already tried the dish here, using the (supposedly) best of local black pudding but it wasn't quite the same. The local product is usually quite salty, harder also than the imported variety.
The "mission" now required a visit to On the Pig's Back, one of the French style stalls in Cork's fabulous English Market, always worth a call. We had to try a few times as they don't always have the Boudin Noir. They had it eventually and we tried it, again with free range eggs, and it was splendid, though I must say we missed that sunny courtyard in Normandy.
If you are in the Market and want to make a full meal of it, you could do worse than pick up the Feta Cheese, Olive and Pepper salad they make up at the Olive stall. For dessert, I dare you to pass Heavens Cake, another nearby stall, without buying! read more
