I am not a fitness person. I have been known to hibernate all year round, and my idea of a…read more'workout' involves that epic stretch that takes place after a very satisfying nap. In an effort to prove to my husband I can do some kind of exercise on a regular basis, I've taken up Barrecode (after a 3 month, mostly unused gym membership). Barrecode is an interesting combination of yoga, pilates, jazz ballet and the barre workout. In that line, I only recognise 'yoga' as a form of exercise, and only because the name reminds me of 'yoghurt', a delicious dairy treat, especially when frozen and loaded with sugar. Barrecode promise "your best body ever" if you keep it up, and when you look at their regulars you can see why. It's a bit scary, if I'm honest. While a little on the pricey side, their classes are loads of fun, and I am often in stitches of laughter as I overbalance for the 10th time while trying to pulse my leg up at a 90 degree angle while gripping a tiny ball between by calf and thigh muscles. My two favourite instructors are Hannah McDonald and Patricia Best. They make inflicting pain look like loads of fun, and don't mind the odd badly timed heckle from the sweaty short girl in the back. As seems the theme with Hobart, all the instructors AND attendees are delightful. The majority are women that have a great sense of humour, and plenty of empathy for other participants. Highly recommended, prepare to feel your muscles burn. On a side note, you might hear the following catchphrases: "Beat, beat, squeeeeeze!" "Embrace the burn!" "If you're shaking, it means you're doing it right!" (What a bunch of sadists)

I always thought yoga was a bit of a lol, but I'm proud to admit that at the age of thirty-three, I…read moream finally here for yoga. I'm all about stretching. Hatha me, baby. I even do the Oms. I blame a couple of things, but my workmate Emma is right up there--she posted on Facebook to say that her yoga centre was doing a one-month special of unlimited classes right as I was starting to think about taking something up to stretch my gammy knee out a bit. Right place, right time, sign me up, I'm ready. Of course, doing yoga with a gammy knee isn't exceptional, but before diving into classes you start with a free consultation with Holli to discuss what you want out of yoga and what parts of you are broken. During my consult she went through some light movements with me and recommended some classes that would suit me best, and I was then ready to dive in. Bija Yoga uses the app Mindbody to schedule their classes, which makes it super easy to find out what time classes are on (and even pay for classes if you're an irregular attendee). I'm a nerd for simple technology so I'm hooked. I've also found the perfect regular class for me, which doesn't start until midday on a weekday, after which I float around town for another hour or so before going to my evening job. I'm delighted and maybe one day I'll also be enlightened, but until then I think I might just keep up my practice.
