At the range the other day, and I heard a *ping* from a few lanes over. Thinking that someone had brought in a M1 Garand, I stepped back to see who it was that was shooting one, and realized that what I'd heard was someone a few lanes over shooting a rifle carelessly enough they hit the target sled. The RSO had stopped to assess the situation and ask the shooter to leave - firmly but professionally. That's something that as a regular range shooter I wish I saw more often. I've never seen a hot range there without a RSO, and they've always been making sure that everyone is shooting safely - and I absolutely appreciate it. read more

The staff knows their stuff when it come the the guns and are extremely helpful with any questions you may have. They have a pretty good selection of modern day firearms as well a good selection pistol manufacturers. If they don't have it in store they'll check their distributor's inventory and ship it to their store. They also do special orders on new guns that will be coming in the future (for me I special ordered the PDP when it came out and the P99 FA). Moving to the back of the store, they have optics, spare mags, parts to build your own rifle, as well as accessory mounts. Pretty much all the stuff to dress up your newly bought rifle. With suppressors it was an easy process as they do Eforms, they take your prints and a picture and send it to the ATF. From there it's all on the ATF to tell you that you can own a metal tube (thank ATF, very cool!). However when filling out the suppressor forms, they did mistype a letter in my eforms username (luckily it was caught very early on and fixed), however for my friend they did fill out his state of birth wrong. Some double checks need to be taken there for improvement. Moving downstairs, they offer multiple different classes for if you're just getting into firearms or someone who just needs a refresher. I took my CPL class here and will be taking the renewal class for when my CPL expires. They also have a 25 yard indoor range to zero your newly owned gun, or perhaps you wanna work on some drawing reps. They also offer some guns you can rent. Which is very helpful for testing out new guns you want to get a feel for. Another perk about their indoor range is, if you bought a suppressor through them, you can ask to shoot it while you wait for the ATF to approve you (should be same day take home and only require a background check). In summery, they're very based and definitely worth a stop in. read more

This is my favorite gun store in the area. I've heard people rave about a place in Dorr (or thereabouts) but that's pretty far for me. I've only been here a few times, but the selection is good and the people seem knowledgable and are more on the friendly and helpful side than some other well-known area stores. I haven't yet tried their gun range, but as far as I can tell it's quite nice. Pretty decent range, not state of the art, but overall good and most importantly clean. Everyone wears a mask, bathrooms are orderly, they separate clean and dirty pens, and they have hand sanitizer. Some of the range folks are great, especially the older gentlemen. However, I observed Sam scream at a father/son duo and made them leave immediately. Following this, Sam also screamed at my husband like he was a child. He was also harassed by another young guy during another visit who accused him of shooting birdshot (not allowed) even though my husband had the ammo which was buckshot out in plain sight. Basically this person (someone's kid playing range warrior) didn't know his ammo. This really put me off from this place despite the great facility itself. read more

Went in there last night and purchased a sigsauer Romeo 5 1x20 red dot. Came home and went on Amazon looking for flip covers for it and found the same thing for $80 less!!! Call back the next day because their policy is no refunds on optics. They didn't offer a refund, store credit or even the difference in the form of a gift certificate. Essentially I was told too bad, we can't compete with Amazon. I've spent over $3500 on guns and accessories in the past month alone. I guess I just learned an $80 lesson. The sales staff are on top of their game. They are helpful and will answer your questions. The people who operate the shooting range will help when the need arises. Just today the range officer helped clear my pistol when it jammed. In the past I was able to do this myself but the guy who assisted me showed this old dog a new trick. And finally, I attended the CPL class they offered and it was great. The range is crowded on weekends during cold weather so I advise to call a few days ahead to make a reservation for range time or you might be out of luck. read more

The facility is clean and sometimes you get someone that really cares about their job. Most of the time you do not. I've had a number of issues with Barracks 616. One time I had to ask the salesman to stop pointing his (I assume loaded) firearm at my face. Seems like an entry-level safety class would go a long way for guys promoting open carry in the store. Today I had to ask 1 of the 4 employees standing around the counter to check me out (they still pointed fingers until the lowest man on the totem pole finally stepped forward and offered his services.) I expect a little better service and professionalism from such a nice place in a nicer part of town. Recently visited 616 to fire off a few rounds of 40 cal. This is a very nice range and store. The range is on the lower level and offers about 6 or 8 firing positions. It is closely monitored by a safety officer to guard against accidents. I enjoyed my time there. The range fees are very reasonable. One thing I didn't like was that there was some guy there at the same time firing a howitzer (long gun of large caliber) and even with my ear protection, it was hard not to jump a bit when that baby went off. I would like to see separate range times for rifles, etc. but doubt that will happen. I enjoyed myself and will be going back. read more

I was impressed with the sales team (can't remember his name just remember he was a college student and is from Chicago). Brought in a 1957 h&l pistol from my father in law. All I knew is that it was a 32. They did some online stuff( I'm not good with computers). Excellent customer service and the staff is all about customer satisfaction. We got there at around 2pm and it was pretty busy. We needed assistance on my favourite rifle and were told they were understaffed as it was busy. But this young gentleman Dakota jumped in right away to help us out. Not only did he teach us how to use one, he also taught us valuable information about the gun and gun safety. Sir you have a customer for life. I'm going to come here more often. I enjoy visits to Barracks 616, if only to browse their firearms selection. It's probably the nicest gun store and range in West Michigan. The store is always clean and has a quiet, modern, refined feel to it. Women shopping for a firearm would enjoy the facility. Firearms in the store are usually quality and/or high-end, which is ideal because junk firearms will ruin your day and a store's reputation quickly. The range is top-notch with a range officer always present. I've seen everything from 22's to 50 Beowulf's being fired in there so there's a broad enthusiast clientele that visits. I see lots of groups and couples and both old and new shooters there and that fills me with enthusiasm for our hobby and the future. Overall, just a very nice place to shop and shoot. I've never taken one of the many classes they offer, but I've heard good things from those that have. read more

I've been to gun ranges throughout the United States. This facility is very impressive. Starting with the helpful staff right down to not having to "rake your brass". I'd recommend this range to anyone visiting Grand Rapids. Heated shooting area was nice since it's been in the single digits all week. I shot at a place on the east side of the state last week that wasn't heated. My son and I froze! 616 is a clean and classy range. I'd recommend reservations for the weekend but they will accept walk ins based on availability. I can't think of anything negative. Go there soon and experience a very nice range. read more

I've been to Barracks 616 a total of 4 times. The customer service can be hit or miss. I've had great council on sighting in my firearms, but I have also had enough of the extremely loud (second hand) rifle concussion noise. This place should limit itself to handguns, not high powered rifles and shotguns. The last time I went was a Thursday afternoon around 2:30pm and I was put on lane 2 for 30 minutes - as it was the only amount of time -and- lane they had available. I was put next to a guy with an AR-15 and although I had both Macks silicone ear plugs pressed securely in my ears, as well as shooting earmuffs, the sound came through the barriers like a cannon blast ! I literally fired one clip in my pistol and left the range. Even though I complained to the cashier that I was there for only 5 minutes, I still got charged for 30 minutes ($15). I suggested they offer specific times when folks can shoot AR-15's and long guns so that others can avoid the deafening noise transfer. Looks like my suggestion has fallen on "deaf" ears. I won't be returning until they change the rules. read more

I took the basic pistol class. The instructor was extremely nice, knowledgeable and taught at a very good pace. The facility itself is very nice. The place and staff did not come off as intimidating. They understood that people who come for basic training essentially know nothing. If you didn't grow up with firearms it can be a bit scary. They did a great job. In my case the class size was 5, including me. The range portion of the class added another staff member who, like the instructor, was very professional and very patient and helpful. For obvious reasons safety is paramount and they do a great job explaining safety rules. I probably interacted with 4 or 5 staff members and they were all polite and professional. I would definitely recommend Barracks616. I will definitely go back there. read more

This is a pretty good gun store in the grand scheme of gun stores. It's a big place that's for sure with some unique products that I was happy to see. They have a good variety of holsters and guns and other various odds and ends for the firearms community. I picked up a holster and some awesome MI gun stickers that I have never seen before. Their prices on guns were a little bit high, about 10% over average (gen 3 glock 19 for $550, I bought mine last week for $475). If I come back to the area I will make sure to stop in as they were good people and seemed to enjoy a good conversation, but I'm sure that would change if there were more customers. While Barracks 616 do have the nicest facility in mid Michigan this company falls VERY short where it's employees and business practices are concerned. Their prices are unnecessarily high, especially ammunition. When I attempted to purchase a scope from them they were very informative and helpful but even with a supposed discount their price was still $100 more than other retailers. I ordered a case of ammunition and was quoted a certain price. When the ammunition came in I was charged $3 per box MORE than I was quoted. I purchased a used 1911 which I was told was in complete working order but I found out afterwards that the backstrap safety was non-functional and the thumb safety retention pin was actually loose and needed to be repaired. I had to take it to a gunsmith before it could be made safe to shoot. When I tried to bring the issue to their attention Mark completely ignored me for nearly half an hour and then was extremely rude and belligerent before walking away mid-sentence to help other customers. On another occasion I took my WW2 Luger P08 to have the ejector spring replaced and a new magazine ordered. The gunsmith told me that his fingers weren't strong enough to fit the spring so he cut the new spring down which of course means that I will have to replace the spring again shortly. The magazine that they supplied caused jams and when I tried to remove the magazine it jammed inside the gun so I had to strip the gun and forcefully remove the magazine from the frame with tools. I was also quoted $450 for a repair to my Luger that a previous gunsmith quoted $50! In under six months I spent several thousands of dollars at this store, I even bought an Officer's annual membership and a CPL course but the way I have been treated is beyond unacceptable. My last visit was the final straw. I booked a lane on their range for myself and my girlfriend to try out a new shotgun. This reservation was made several hours in advance. When we arrived at the range we were told that they were just about to close down the main range to set up for a weekly event and that they were going to put us on the smaller private range instead. Shortly after we began shooting the range safety officer, Wayne, approached my girlfriend and told her that she could not have her holstered pistol on her hip while we were in the range and she would have to leave it on the table with the other firearms we were using. This is not one of their rules and not something that other customers have been asked to do. After checking with another employee the RSO did admit that he was wrong but the harassment was uncalled for. Shortly afterwards we were told by the employee at the counter (Wes) that our reservation had not been saved in the computer (even though we saw him check the booking when we signed in), the lane was now double booked and we were going to have to leave the range but said that a second reservation was being made for us for an hour later. He said to finish up what we were shooting and come out to the waiting area. As we were packing up the handful of guns that we had brought with us, Wes came back in the range and began shouting at us for taking too long to pack up. We finished loading up, retrieved our IDs from the employee at the counter, and left the building. I went back in to speak with a manager about the way we had been treated. Gregg the general manager refused to see me and sent out a young man who claimed to be a manager as well. When I attempted to explain the situation, he was dismissive and clearly did not care at all. So all in all the policies and staff behavior completely counter the quality of the facility. It's a shame because the facility has so much potential if it were only run by better people. read more
