One of the only Markets in the area that is still a good market without loads of junk and tat. You have a vaste choice of veggie stalls where you can get veggies half the price of the market, it's where you can find the best bread rolls and cheap free range local eggs as well as a good choise of eat and brilliant fresh fish stalls without that 'swimming in blood' meat and fish you get in the supermarket. the salmon is the best I have ever tasted and the sandwich meat is sooo much cheaper and better than any supermarket. I think it's only fair to discribe both and then allow the readers to decide which they prefer most. Barnsley Market of yesteryear was the largest outdoor market in Northern England, Northern in the olden days as meaning anywhere Northside of Birmingham. The market had everything you needed, including a small cattle market at the bottom end of Midland Street. During the last week of August, every year, all the market stalls were taken down and a Grand Fairground arose on the market site. The week was known as "Barnsley Feast Week". Barnsley Market of the present day is no match of the "Grand Barnsley Market" of yesteryear. Most of today's market is indoors, what remains of the old outdoor market is so small that if you blinked your eyes when passing by in a car you'd miss the market site. The present day market stalls, indoor as well as outdoor, are too close together. They give off a clausophobic atmospheric environment. As for the fairground, well that's gone. Barnsley Market is a great place to spend a Saturday morning. The indoor market is a treasure trove where you can find fresh eels to the most obscure nut or bolt the most avid of DIY experts would need. Stalls selling fresh bread, pies, dripping, cows heel and tripe give the impression you have stepped in to another time. The friendly calls from the Market holders will entice you to try things you may never have otherwise considered. The prices are hard to beat and everything is so fresh it is difficult to resist eating it on the spot. Outside there is a good variety of stalls ranging from good quality materials to a shoe stall that cannot be beat for designer shoes at rock bottom prices. Barnsley Market for me is one of the best markets in Yorkshire. It has a huge range of choice from clothes stalls, homeware, carpet and rug stalls, to fruit and veg, toys and so much more. It has really kept to its own rather than diminishing like some nearby markets. It feels really welcoming, properly Yorkshire in its atmosphere and the prices are excellent. By far the best part of the market is the meat and fish market where you can buy good quality meats for low prices much better than the supermarket. Why not try getting some ready to eat seafood? Barnsley market is probably one of the best markets you will find in England. It has every stall you could dream of and at least one store, I can guarantee will be perfect for you! But some stalls with some items can be a little pricey. The streets are full of people though and it gets busy very quick so if you want to go then it is best to get there early on as the crowd will start to grow even bigger as you get futher into the day.
