The Bridges was opened in the Eighties, turning what was several open-air streets into one covered…read moremall. In 2000 it was extended and with that, Debenhams was opened. There are several eateries and coffee shops in the Bridges, such as Krispy Kreme, Starbucks, Nudo, Caffé Nero, and because it's north east England, two Greggs outlets ;-) There's also two cafes in Debenhams and one on the top floor of Waterstones. There's a good-sized Tesco and an Iceland in the mall, as well as a M&S nearby, so you do not need to leave the city centre to buy groceries. Though not a part of the mall itself, three apartment blocks sit beside the Bridges. If you've got a small fortune going spare, there's worse places to live - the city's just downstairs! Despite recent regeneration, the outdoor shopping streets of Sunderland leave a lot to be desired. The mall is still the 'big city' part of Sunderland, however if you want more choice or more independent shops, it's worth taking the trip into Newcastle.

I absolutely love this shop but only visit at certain times of the year as I often get carried…read moreaway! For anyone who has never visited, Dunelm Mill is a large shops which sells all sort of marvellous homeware, bed linen, furniture, kitchenware - basically anything you could possibly need for your home! As well as things you don't need but buy anyway just because they are pretty ;) In general the prices are reasonable even when there is not a sale on. The quality of the items which I have purchased has always been excellent, and on the rare occassion that I have had a problem, the staff have handled it well and issued a refund or replacement. Dunelm Mill often have some very good promotions on their bedding, which incidentally is the thing that I tend to shop there for most. They cater for all tastes - whether your home is contemporary or vintage inspired there's bound to be something that you need (or more often just want in my case!). Recently they have also started to sell online. Their web site is http://www.dunelm-mill.com . They do charge for delivery, though it is fairly reasonable at £3.95 for standard delivery or £5.95 for the next day service. They do have quite a lot of their products online; however, it is best to visit instore as they have more variety, and also the best end-of-line bargains tend not to appear on the website. Overall, Dunelm Mill is miles ahead of the more expensive homeware shops - great value, as well as offering durable and desirable homeware!

Eleven is a designer clothes shop…read more They have recently bought the rights to sell Stone Island, this means they are the only shop in Sunderland with Stone Island Apparel. They also sell Hugo Boss, Ralph Lauren and Fred Perry. The store is very spacious and has 2 floors. Eleven is a premium clothing retailer which specializes in selling high end clothing. Many of the…read moredesigner labels Eleven sell are well known for their quality including Hugo Boss, Ralph Lauren and Stone Island. Although the items Eleven sell are undeniable quality the same can not be said for the lethargic customer service, their depleted stock levels and their online presence. On numerous occasions I have browsed their website, viewed an item I would like to purchase (with the website clearly stating the availability of the item including different sizes), only to find upon arrival to the physical store that they have sold out of the item, even though the website states the item is in stock. For example I wished to purchase a Paul Smith jumper, the website said the jumper was available in small, medium, large and extra large, however when I entered the tangible store Eleven only had medium in stock. I do question whether the relevant clothing is actually available in Eleven or just a marketing ploy to attract customers to buy other related items. Another issue I had was with the websites misrepresentation of their opening times. The website states the opening times as 9 - 5:30 Monday to Saturday. However based on past experience the shop does not open until 9:30, what poor service. In conclusion to this review I would recommend not using their online presence as an indicator on their stock levels/opening times, rather to phone the shop directly to make enquiries. For any potential customers interested in the world of designer labels purchase from reputable stores such as House of Fraser. Thank you for anyone who has taken the time to read this review.

Okay, so it's a big warehouse with a 'stack em high, sell em cheap' philosophy, but sadly this…read moreoften equates into you paying just as much or more on some goods once you've added the VAT on. There is a bit of a scatalogical layout of items; tv and hifi near to the entrance, fresh produce to the rear with dried foodstuffs to the far side. The rest is a bit higgedly piggedly with plants rubbing shoulders with vacuum cleaners and storage boxes alongside small electricals. If you're thinking of buying something electrical, you need to do your research first to make sure that the prices here are really such the bargain they appear to be, as it's easy to find cheaper elsewhere. This said, you can get some good bargains in the food sections, especially on boxes of fresh chicken fillets, pain au chocolate, cookies and coffee. The diamond jewellery is lovely to look at, but the prices are just downright silly even if these are higher quality stones. As I say, it's not so much as 'buyer beware' but 'buyer be cautious' as once the VAT is added, it may not be the bargain you thought.

I visit here often as they tend to get a wide variety of different furniture in, including sofas, dining tables and plenty more depending on when you visit. The store is set on two floors - the downstairs floor has mostly sofas and other living room furniture, and bric a brac/books. Upstairs has more furniture, mostly for bedrooms such as small cabinets and chairs. Prices are very reasonable - £100 for a sofa in very good condition - and delivery is cheap too. This place is definitely worth a visit if you're wanting to furnish your house with good quality items on a low budget. I'd much rather have a £100 second hand sofa from here, than pay £100 for a new one at cheap high street stores which will fall to pieces quickly!
