5 stars isn't enough! We absolutely love this place and so do the pups! The second we checked in we were welcomed by Bobbi, who helped us throughout our stay and was so sweet and helpful the entire trip. Barkwells had treats, homemade pumpkin bread, wine, and even a doggie birthday cupcake for our birthday pup, Skye just waiting for us upon arrival (they even had a special welcome note on the white board). We stayed in the Fisher cabin and literally never wanted to leave because it was so beautiful and well appointed. The pups loved swimming in the doggie lake and running around the large fenced in area. The owners of Barkwells even came by to say hi which made it extra special as well. We loved it so much, we even added an extra day which they were very accommodating with as well! Overall our best trip!

I really should not be writing this review as this little gem is hard to book and I don't want MORE people to know about it, BUT the owners and staff do such a fantastic job it is hard not to give kudos and let others know who love their dogs that this place is awesome. First, they vet your pet to make sure they are not aggressive and have all their shots and bordetella. Each cottage has their own fenced in yard, and then the entire of leash property is all fenced in with so much room to wander and a big lake to play in. The cottages are all well appointed and are dog centric with doggy doors, dog bowls, plenty of towels, hooks for leashes, etc. I could go on and on about this place. Anyone who has dogs and want s a great getaway, this is the place

My husband and I were looking for a pet-friendly place to spend the our anniversary weekend in Asheville and we happened to come across Barkwells. We were lucky to be able to reserve one of their cottages at their Brevard location during the busy holiday season. The place is absolutely breathtaking surrounded by natural beauty! The cottage opens up to a large beautiful meadow with a pond. The meadow is a common area that is fully fenced so we could let our pup run leash free . The cottage itself was clean, beautiful and equipped with all amenities . This place is completely dog-centric : we didn't have to carry our pup's bed, bowls or towels , they provided it all. The cottage had its private fenced backyard as well so we could let pup free. Barkwells also has 3 adorable rescue donkeys, we had a chance to interact with them. The grounds were beautiful, there were string lights and tasteful Christmas decorations everywhere. Apart from the place , the check in experience and stay was excellent . We were checked in by Michael and also met Ellen and their daughter, all were very warm and welcoming ! They really wanted us to have a wonderful time celebrating our 10th anniversary there and we did! They also left us a cake, Champagne and notes - we really appreciated the personal touch ! Overall a wonderful, memorable stay and we're already planning our next one :))

It was love at first sight as soon as we drove into the property and checked into our cabin (Peppermint Patty)!! The words, "superb", "fantastic", and "amazing" can't even begin to capture how warm, inviting, and beautiful this place is! What we appreciated the most was the attention to every detail--it's like they anticipated every need we may have had! From the well-organized and plentiful amount of utensils in the kitchen drawers, to the blender and toaster in the cabinet, and to the wine glasses and champagne flutes in the cupboards...not to mention the doggie towels and sheets, to how very clean it all was, attention to every single detail meant so much!! Also, they're dog friendly and really mean it!! There's no weight or size limit to the pet(s) you can bring which also means so much b/c we have 2 large dogs. Who, by the way, had the best time! They loved exploring the property and running around in the backyard! Actually, all of us had the best time and left wishing we could've stayed longer. We're already planning our next trip, so I'm sure we will! You're heaven sent, Barkwells!! Thank you!!

The mozzarella sticks are 100% worth the hype. They are truly as delicious as everyone says. The cheesesteak was also amazing! I added jalapeños to mine, highly recommend. Aside from the food, the people here are so welcoming. Tim (the owner) was kind enough to share his story with us and made us feel right at home. Our server Katlin went above and beyond for us! She also shared some of the stories from Hurricane Helene, along with pictures and timestamps of the wreckage. It is heartbreaking, yet so inspiring to see how this community came together to rebuild. You can feel the love that was poured into it. We cannot wait to come back and visit everyone. We left with full bellies, amazing memories, a little buzz, and new friends. Thank you all so much!

After going to another establishment in Hot Springs that was very unfriendly, we ended up at Spring Creek Tavern. We were only going for a drink and an appetizer and I have to say, I've had many mozzarella sticks in my time but these were the ultimate cheesesticks... so crispy and gooey (but not too gooey) with a type of meat in it as well which I think may be salami but really not sure except that whatever it is, it is delicious. And our waitress was friendly and welcoming, sharing with us photos of the flood when we showed our interest. We sat out on the deck which was beautiful overlooking the water; very glad we stumbled upon this spot.

Next time, I'm leaving room for pie. I don't believe we had just one waitress. It seems that in this quaint little Diner, everyone is looked after and checked on as a whole by staff. My Ball jar of sweet tea was never any less than half full, and that sweet tea was *chef's kiss*. We both decided on the meatloaf, and I opted for cornbread, green beans and pickled beets. I felt like I had been transported back in time and was being fed by my great great grandmother. Sounds a bit dramatic, I know. But I haven't had cornbread, meatloaf or beets like this in so many years. It did not taste like restaurant food, it tasted like home cooking. We're already planning our next little "run away from life and parenthood" to Hot Springs, and Smoky Mountain Diner is top of the "will definitely visit again" list. Thank you for treating us like family.

I was in Hot Springs for a couple of days on section hike of the Appalachian Trail. I stopped in to…read moreeat 3 different meals there over the course of three days. Day 1: Lunch. Another hiker and I decided to stop in as we got to town and have a late lunch. It had been a couple of days since we'd had town food and we were tired and hungry. The first thing I noticed was the wait to be seated. We waited about 20 minutes, and once we got to the dining area, there were several empty tables. Once we're seated and ordered, the food came out timely and was delicious. I had a cheeseburger and the cherry cobbler with ice cream. Day 2: Breakfast. Since the food was good, we decided to go back for breakfast again the next day. Again, there was a wait to be seated. We were a group of 5 so we expected there might be a wait. The waitress was friendly and our orders were placed quickly. it did take a while for the food to come out from the kitchen. I had a country breakfast plate with ham. Again the food was delicious. Day 3: Supper. We had a relatively short wait to be seated this time. We were seated and asked for some water. It took over 20 minutes to get the water. Finally a different waitress came out and took our order. I ordered the hungry hiker challenge. It is a cheeseburger with three 8-ounce burger patties on it. The menu says if you finish you get some free cobbler. While we were waiting for our food we noticed that a local who came in and sat down after we were seated had already been served and was done eating before our food arrived. I finished the burger, and some of the other patron's noticed and congratulated me. When the waitress arrived she asked if we needed anything else. I asked if the free cobbler came with ice cream on it. She said no, so I ordered ice cream to go with my cobbler. It was a peach that day. Again, the food was delicious. The main thing that I notice about the restaurant was that despite having great food, service was pretty slow. One of the hikers I ate with noticed that the waitresses seemed to have to seat the customers, take the orders, deliver the food, clean the tables, and handle the check-out at the end of the meals. It seems like the service would have been much quicker if they had someone handling the seating, check-out's, and possibly bussing and cleaning tables. The worst part of the experience was the long waits to be seated and for the food to come out. The food itself was great and I found the servers and other customers to be friendly. The furnishings were clean with a 1960's diner feel. Overall, I would hesitate to go back if I were in a hurry of any kind. If time is no object, the food is great.

We booked a 2-night stay at Mountain Magnolia bed & breakfast for June 11-13th. This was our second stay here as our first time was three years prior. We even booked the same upstairs corner room with a huge deck and balcony. The weather during our stay was humid and rainy. Upon checking in on an early Friday evening, the room appeared clean and welcoming. We immediately took showers to wash off the sweat and rain from our afternoon clay shooting. There is a jacuzzi tub in the bathroom, however we didn't use it because of the stains on the tub floor. Even though it was most likely clean and sanitary, it wasn't screaming "come soak in me" the least bit. After a terrible dinner in town, we visited the hot springs hot tubs before coming back to our room for the night. It's unfortunate that the Inn did away with the restaurant they use to have down stairs. I loved that restaurant; it was incredibly convenient and they offered an amazing menu. Really bummed because the restaurant was half the appeal. Day 2, we woke up later than usual, but the keeper had our breakfast waiting for us on a tray downstairs. Yogurt and granola, blueberry bran muffin, mixed fruit bowl, coffee, and a hard boiled egg. Yummy. I had booked a massage with a gal that came to the inn around 11 am, and she did an amazing job. Then we traveled down the road to the rafting place and rafted the river. By the time we returned to the Inn, the keeper was gone for the night. Which was fine, except we were in desperate need of fresh towels. The bath towels they provided us with the room were soaking wet and dirty. We searched the entire Inn looking for a linen closet with no luck. So we finally made the decision to "borrow" the towels from the downstairs room that was clean and had no residents. At least, we think it had no residents. Ugh. I really hope we didn't take some poor couple's towels who had a super late arrival. Whoever thought that 2 towels for 2 adults for 2 nights was enough, was so wrong. I need 2 towels just for myself for 1 night. Lol. Anyway, after stealing towels from another room (don't worry, we left a note), we showered and headed to bed. Breakfast was available to us the second morning, but we were only interested in the coffee before hitting the road home. Here's a list of the positives: Parking is easy. The rooms are big, clean and welcoming. They provide WiFi. Checking in and out is easy, smooth and hassle-free. The balconies provide a beautiful view. The corner balcony is huge. The bed is super comfortable. There's air conditioning, a ceiling fan and extra fan in the wardrobe. There's a fireplace and extra blankets (also in the wardrobe). There's hangers in the wardrobe, in case you forgot to bring some. They also put the hair dryer in the wardrobe. They gave you a built-in treasure hunt game called "where is everything?" You have access to power outlets to charge your electronic devices. Breakfast is awesome. The inn keeper is nice and welcoming. They provide you with shampoo, conditioner and body wash in a wall dispenser. And the bathrooms have a jacuzzi tub. Here's a list of the negatives: Cell service is inconsistent (which isn't really their fault, it's just a spotty location). They only allow smoking in one area on the premises, and that area doesn't include your private balcony. You can only use the fireplace in the winter. They only provide you with 2 towels, which isn't enough for an extended stay. You could probably get more towels by asking the inn keeper, but make sure you do it in the morning when she's around and not evening when she's gone. The tubs could be cleaner. There is no tv in the rooms. The wardrobe in the room has no handles, making the opening of the doors quite a hassle. The drawers in the bottom of the wardrobe are broken, making them unusable. You can't turn the ceiling fan on high without it shaking uncontrollably, giving you the feeling of being in a deadly earth quake. The bathroom is small with no counter, leaving little room to place your makeup or toiletries. And the balcony is very unpleasant in the rain (they need to provide a table umbrella, or small gazebo of sorts). Normally, one would look at the negatives and think "well that's not so bad." However, when you see the price tag for a night's stay? That little stuff becomes a much bigger deal. We paid a little over $250 per night. The price tag was WAY too high for what they offer, in my personal opinion. With all that being said, I still heavily recommend this inn. We were told that the place is getting new owners soon, so hopefully they address the issues and maybe lower the price. We will definitely be back.

Excellent stay! Second time at Asheville Cottaged and we cannot say enough about the experience. They think of everything to make your experience top notch! We arrived and were feeling a little snacky. No problem! The snack tree and variety of waters/soft drinks/juiced beverages in the fridge were welcome! We browsed the binder for suggestions on where to grab dinner. After dinner at White Duck Taco, we stopped Ingles for a few groceries. Of course, Tracie and Marshall made sure each cottage had an Ingels savings card to use! Need a battery? Under the kitchen sink. Ziplock bag? Yep..,check a drawer in kitchen. They think of everything you may need and have it on hand for you! Loved the soaking tub! Loved the heated bathroom floor. Loved heated toilet seat. Accidentally hit a button on the bidet in the middle of the night and got a little surprise rinse off. . The big surprises were seeing a few bears late one afternoon behind the cottage (Magnolia). Thankfully, we just sat quietly on the deck and they looked at us and took off for the woods. Overall, it was a great trip and on the flight home, I started to look at availability to come back for a girls trip later in the Fall with my sister and niece. But before I could book anything, Hurricane Helene severely impacted the area. My heart breaks for all the families who lost loved ones in this disaster. By finding them on social media to see if they were ok, I found out that thankfully Asheville Cottages did not sustain much damage due to their location. Since Asheville tourism is essentially stopped, Tracie and Marshall have graciously opened their cottages to local families who have been displaced by the hurricane as they still have electricity and water. They also are still paying their employees salaries during this time (as they did during Covid) - taking care of them like family. THIS is exactly the kind of small business that my husband and I are proud to support so we will be staying at Asheville Cottages next time we come to Asheville...whenever that can happen.

We left feeling so many emotions, but renewed, grateful and inspired were the strongest. Check in was simple. I was sent an extremely well laid out itinerary for checking in, what to expect during our stay, procedures, directions. They thought of everything. I didn't need to ask a single question. We stayed in the Pine cabin. I was booking 2 weeks in advance, so I had to take what was open and change my dates to stay during the week. Initially I had my sights set on the cabin with a screened in porch, but this sweet cabin was perfect for just the 2 of us. I can't say enough good things about our stay. The view from our little front porch, paired with the symphony of frogs, cicadas, and other wildlife was intoxicating. It was my favorite spot to eat breakfast, have my morning coffee, and then tea after lunch and dinner. It was still cool enough at night to open the windows and enjoy being sung to sleep by nature. Our private, large hot tub filled with mineral water from the hot springs was heaven on earth. It really did ease our achey joints and my skin seemed to love it. There's just enough of an opening in the trees above, in this secluded little haven, to be able to see the stars at night. I thoroughly enjoyed floating on my back, gazing at the stars at night. Then again in the morning, while the light, cool rain washed over the top of me. Everything about our stay was sensory heaven for me. The cabin was well stocked with what we may need. Very clean and cozy. By bringing our own bed linens and towels we saved $35 off of our cleaning fee. Cell service in the community is really spotty, so I was relieved to have wifi access in the cabin. For some reason, we figured out that we got the best connection on the couch by the patio doors. While we wanted to unplug for the week, we still needed to be able to check on our feral roommates that we call grandchildren. I hope my review inspires others to travel to Hot Springs. This community is still recovering from Hurricane Helene and could use our support. Everywhere we went, we were met with such friendliness and warmth. We heard several stories of resilience and of a community coming together for the greater good. They deserve more help than what they've received so far.
