I was able to easily find what would work for me, and checking out was a breeze. This is an example of what small town hardware stores used to be.

Sometimes a quick hardware run turns into an unexpected test of patience. On December 5, 2025 at…read morearound 5:15 PM, a friendly cashier called the manager over because two clearance items were incorrectly priced. One item wasn't marked at all, and the other showed a $10 sticker with an additional 50% off. When I scanned the barcode in the Ace Hardware app, the item rang up as $2.99, so I kindly requested a price match based on Ace's own listed pricing. The manager entered the interaction abruptly, avoided eye contact, and loudly exclaimed "What the F***"--a remark heard by several customers in nearby lines. This was both unprofessional and unnecessary. He then insisted the online price was inaccurate and attempted to charge an incorrect amount ($31.99!!), even after I showed the product information. I ultimately ordered the items for in-store pickup at the correct price, but the situation could have been resolved quickly and respectfully in the moment. I've included a photo with the serial number so this can be reviewed by leadership and handled more appropriately going forward. The rest of the staff was excellent; the issue was solely with the manager's conduct. I hope future visits to this location reflect the professionalism Ace is known for.

Two Hardware Stores, in our area-- And a Few Thoughts:…read more We're fortunate to have two hardware stores in our area -- convenience matters, and I genuinely try to keep my spending local. The staff is consistently helpful and knowledgeable, and that counts for a lot. Supporting local businesses means keeping our neighbors employed, and I don't take that lightly. But let's talk about the elephant in the room: pricing. I've done the comparisons. Many items here run 2x what you'd pay online -- and increasingly, I'm seeing things priced at 3x the online equivalent. I understand local businesses can't always match the big online retailers, but markups at that level make it genuinely hard to justify shopping here regularly, even when I want to. For my fellow seniors: there's a 10% discount available -- but only one day a week. Here's the thing: we're seniors every single day. To their credit, the other hardware store in our area offers no senior discount at all -- so this place is at least a step ahead there. But a modest everyday discount, even at a lower percentage, would go a long way toward building loyalty with a customer base that shops consistently and values local relationships. It would be worth exploring. I'm not here to organize a boycott -- that's not my style. But I will say this: if the pricing gap keeps widening, more and more of us are drifting to online options, not out of preference, but out of necessity. It's worth noting that seniors are a very different customer base than they were 5 or 10 years ago -- nearly everyone I know has learned to shop online, or has someone who does it for them. For those of us on fixed incomes, finding a better price isn't a luxury, it's a necessity. The goodwill is there. The staff is great. Meet us halfway on the value, and this place could really thrive.

Today I needed extra keys and they are quick to make them (just press the buzzer and they will come over). 4 keys cost 9 bucks which is reasonable even with inflation! This place is huge - lumber.. .paint..lighting fixtures and a whole separate gardening area. Most of the employees are older and have experience in some sort of construction related area. It's a great place to have in Grass Valley! Ps. They also serve pies for about 18 bucks!

After purchasing my item,…read morethis older Caucasian woman dressed in a blue top (who I was later told was the manager) approached me in the parking lot and curtly demanded to see my receipt. I produced it and she compared the price on my item with the receipt, presumably to ensure I bought it (and didn't steal it or swapped tags with another item?). Then she handed it back to me without a word and started to walk back into the store. Nothing along the lines of "thank you, have a nice day" or any courtesy for patronizing their business. As she entered the door to the Restore, she swung back around and snapped at me about my car being parked in the handicap spot if I'm not disabled. I personally am not, but my mother-in-law is, and my mother-in-law was still checking out her items, and we had the disabled placard hung up in the car. Again, not a single word after this. She did tell me my trunk wasn't closed fully though, so I appreciated that. I guess she had to have the last word? I was made to feel like a criminal. I went to the counter where my mother-in-law was checking out and told her how the manager just rudely spoke to and treated me. The staff at the counter apologized and I replied it's not their fault. It's obvious to me the manager hates her job, so for the sake of ensuring continued business by well-meaning customers, she should either show some respect or let someone who can smile take her job.

One star for Julie's attitude. 5 starts for the LOADING crew!…read more Who knew that at a store such a the habitat restore you have to make sure to use perfect vocabulary with their highly educated staff. Julie was so incredibly UNHELPFUL when I came in today to pick up my items we purchased on Tuesday. She can't seem to find the correlation between the words pickup and loading and was so condescending when I had to spell out for her I was here to pick up my items. When she finally was able to compute that, everything went fairly smoothly until some moron blocked the parking lot with their trailer and then she came out and asked me if I was carrying my furniture I bought to my car...lol I would pay someone to do that for me Julie, if that was the case. Regardless of my awful experience with her, and her disgusting attitude, we got our items we paid for and are happy. Hopefully Julie sees happier days soon.
