I stumbled upon Plateau in the Lanes in Brighton, and this is exactly the kind of place I love…read morefinding, making hours of walking past other restautants until I find that one that speaks to me all worth it. Small, cool, unassuming, and a little tucked away. Definitely one of those IYKYK restaurants. Sat at the bar and immediately knew I was in the right place. The natural wine selection is fantastic. The wine program is on point. We ordered a few things to share. The oysters were excellent, super fresh, and they had Porthilly Rocks, which is always a good sign if you know oysters. Everything that came out was just simple food done properly. Nothing overcomplicated, just really good ingredients and a kitchen that clearly knows how to cook. You can also tell this is a real culinary crowd kind of place. Not a tourist trap. The place felt abuzz with aficionados. Brighton has a number of good restaurants, but Plateau stands out. If I lived here, I'd be in this place all the time. Strong recommendation.

So many great restaurants having an affordable menu which you may not always get a chance to dine at. We dined from Plateau's autumn set menu. For starters, I opted for the cured salmon, apple, fennel and lemon. It was so delicate and fresh. The salmon, slightly salted REALLY really played with the flavours of the fennel and apple. A great light starter, my dining partners opted for the pigs head croquette, and though they said delicious, it was a lot going on. For mains, I had pumpkin risotto with walnuts and my favourite Barkham blue cheese. It was so creamy! I always feel a little miffed when the veg option is a risotto but this was very very tasty. Onto more cheese.. dessert! I went for the Spenwood and quince. Spenwood is a pressed sheep's cheese. We also ended up getting a cheeky little blackberry cheesecake as well. This was a cheesecake from heaven! Definitely recommend.

We were drawn into this place the other week by the announcement 'Live Jazz on Fridays'. I'm not…read moresure if there was in fact no jazz playing, or if we'd had a few too many to find the precise room in which this was (the latter being probably more likely), but we missed out on the jazz that evening. Regardless, it was worth a visit. The barman was very friendly, and impressed me hugely when he got us sniffing the various types of dark rum on offer! I stuck with the Sailor Jerry, but there was a good choice, as well as tequila shots for a pound if you're so inclined. I didn't get any of the Mediterranean food on offer in the restaurant but would definitely go back another time - really good service and atmosphere.

Mainly due to the fact that they would consistently get over 20 people together for good times. This was also the first place I tried the shisha or hubbly bubbly to some people. It was quite novel and I haven't seen any other place do this before. Friday and Saturday nightsare definitely the best times to go but I would wonder if we hadn't been in such large numbers whether it would be as much fun. With a huge amount of different drinks on offer it would be a good place to stop in if you were on a pub crawl for sure. However, I couldn't see myself spending all night here.

The staff is personable, knowledgeable, and most importantly make fab cocktails. They were serving up some gorgeous looking cheese plates, too. They specialize in the classics and make them right. Loved everything we tried including the Lucien Gaudin and a nice champagne cocktail. They were running a negroni special when we visited that was a total steal. Three different versions- vintage (made with old bottles produced before recipes changed), classic, and barrel aged. Amazing!! Recommend and would definitely return.

Before I could even get to the window to read the menu on display, the owner (or front of house) comes out and asks "can I help you" with a face that looks shocked by us even coming close to the bar, this whole time not once asking us if we'd like to come in for a drink or a table. We tell him we are just looking at the menu and he proceeds to tell us "it's only a Christmas menu, but can I help you with anything else?" This whole time blocking the entrance, still looking at me with this perplexed face. I've never felt such a hostile welcoming from front of house. The fact I couldn't even get inside without him asking why I'm even at the door In the first place should go to show that this bar does not welcome all. After telling him I probably won't come here again (seeing as I clearly wasn't wanted) he then says "fuck you" to me as I'm walking away. Horrible service that didn't even include anything being served, apart from his "fuck you" remark. Don't go here, it's a danger zone.
