Stumbled across this place completely by accident! Mrs G and I decided to take a nice drive through…read morethe beautiful Peak District on a gorgeous sunny December day. First stop was Matlock - cute little village, powerful river flowing though town, nice views all around. We wanted to have lunch but hadn't really seen anything and so we decided to head to Bakewell (about 20 minutes drive) when I noticed a classy, inviting, purple sign by the road "The Orangery". We quickly turned around and are so glad that we did! We had a really GREAT lunch and have already booked again for Christmas Eve when our daughter and new husband visit. It may sound odd but it used to be part of a very prestigious school for over a century - the most famous "Old Girl" was Richmal Crompton who wrote all the "William" books that I devoured as a kid. Now the whole complex is basically a old peoples home (Man are they lucky!!). So the lunchgoers were, on average, grey haired (but I am going that way too) - but it was fairly quiet in terms of lunchgoers and music (just the right volume - Christmas songs, Wham and many many more of the favorites. The restaurant drips class, the bistro also (full bar). A wide selection of offerings _ I seriously wanted the prawn curry but got lured into a Christmas special. Wonderful staff, great food, excellent service - and beautiful nooks for a quiet or romantic lunch. Try it you'll like it! Two big thumbs up Review #108 2019

Anyway have been several times since then, and the coffee is amazing. The staff are coffee mad and take it really seriously. Abit freaky but the coffee is exceptional. I usually drink coffee at Nonna's or Bragazzis but this stuff is better. Have only eaten there once but the food was fresh, and very tasty and my mate even managed to buy gluten free cake - which was great as it stopped her moaning for ages while I ate mine! The outside area is lovely with seats by the river but its been too cold to sit out every time I have been. I was offered a blanket but I am not that brave. I have drunk coffee in alot of places - most of bad, weak, milky and bitter but they have really upped the ante. Abit pricey but well worth it. Just don't ask for chocolate on your cappuccino!!

I tried elliotts on a recommendation from a rambling group friend and found myself very disapointed. The coffee which i waited an age for whilst the barrista chatted away with a dog! was bitter, and don't even get me started on the cakes. i know when cake has come from a wholesaler rather than being homemade but the women behind the counter insisted they were all made that day by herself. this was a blatant lie and next time maybe they should do a better job of hiding the costco packaging when staff are replenishing supplies it's a shame about this place as it's in a lovely spot, and it has the plus point of not being of the twee tea room genre so proliific in the peak district and apart from the women behind the counter the rest of the staff seem to be very sweet.

Out of the centre slightly, we easily got a table without a booking, the restaurant itself being quite expansive, with a good range of seating and plenty of space. Our round table was perfect for lunch, very sociable. There is also outdoor seating too, which would be lovely on Summer's night. A woodburner added much needed heat to the restaurant, but it was still a little chilly where we were sat, because our table was next the large glass entrance door. The Pointing Dog & Duck has a sizeable bar, with a good variety of beer and wine, but it was soft drinks all round, as most people were driving. There are separate lunch and dinner menus, both of which had a decent variety of classic and more unusual dishes. Going straight for the mains, there was a good selection of dishes like fish and chips, Steak Frites, and Caesar Salad. Between the five of us though we had a pizza topped with duck, Hoisin sauce and coriander, crisp, large and tasty; a mushroom and spinach rigatoni, probably the pick of the dishes, packed full of flavour, and a decent sized portion. Two of our party opted for the Hake fillet, with Chorizo and Cannellini beans, a hearty dish perfect for a winter's day. I went for the Pdog Bacon Cheeseburger, again a sizeable, tasty burger, with a mountain of fries, but maybe next I'll be more adventurous next time. One course and lots of talking later, we were all pretty much full, no room the intriguingly named 'Snicker's Mess', maybe next time. This is definitely a venue we will visiting again soon.

Staff were very friendly and had loads of tips for things to do in the surrounding area. Amazing mushrooms on toast!!
