The down side in a sense is the lines are normally very long, but they are handled pretty quickly as long as you do not have an indecisive customer in front of you. The employees are very friendly and helpful with informing you of what the pastries or items consist of. The coffee is outstanding, always made fresh to your likings. Definitely the best Portuguese cacoila sandwiches, chourico sandwiches, malassadas. There's nothing that I have ordered there that I can say I did not like. I'm from Cambridge, MA - my girlfriend and I were on our way back from a day trip in Newport, RI, and I desperately needed a coffee (and dessert) after dinner to make it through the drive back to Cambridge. Not wanting to go to the 1,384 Dunkin' Donuts along Route 24, we Yelped and found Barcelos. Walking in around 7pm, most of the tables were full of talkative people young and old, the pastries behind the glass must have had a gravitational pull - from their size, their beauty, or both - because I was drawn right towards them. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to me, my girlfriend went straight for the ice cream on the other side of Barcelos. There were three women behind the counter - two were teenagers, and the other woman was a bit older. The older woman came up to me, and I asked for a cafe au lait. She said "...What?" It really was busy and she seemed a bit flustered, so I said how about a latte - it was one of the cheaper lattes I've seen, at only $2.50. I told her that I was going to get a couple pastries too, and that this was all to-go, because we had to get back on the road. She asked me if I wanted sugar or cinnamon in my latte - I had never been asked for cinnamon before - but decided that the pastries should be enough sugar and took it plain. I picked two small pastries - two puffs, one with cream and one with strawberry jam - to go with it. Meanwhile, one of the teenage girls was getting an ice cream for my girlfriend. She came back, eating some chocolate ice cream in front of me. The older woman looked really upset, and turned to the teenager and shouted, "Hey, this is to-go! To-gooooo!!!" I said it's fine, she can eat the ice cream in the car. She said, "What's she gonna do with that spoon?!" The ice cream was really good, because my girlfriend ignored all of this as she put the metal spoon with more chocolate in her smiling mouth. The metal spoon was exchanged for a plastic one by the guilty-looking teenage girl, and we rushed out of there before we caused any more trouble. The pastries were delicious and the latte was perfect - tons of foam so it wasn't too hot - and we were able to make it back to Cambridge safe and awake. I'm definitely stopping here on my way to Newport if I go down there again! read more

I want to give this place a great review because I love their sandwiches and bread! Most of their pastries are too sweet for me, but I'm not one for sweets in general. I have brought their pastries to parties and people have loved them! However, I'm all about customer service and this place is lacking. Almost every time I have gone, I feel like I am bothering them by being there. It's too bad because they have great food and coffee! I just can't take an attitude every time I go in there. I love this bakery. The pastries are beautiful, but I love to come here for lunch. The simple sandwiches are perfect. They know that just two or three ingredients is all you need to make a great sandwich. My favorite is fresh mozzerella with olive tapenade and watercress on a Papo Seco. Decided to give this bakery a try in my search for a new local bakery favorite. After reading the previous Yelp reviews and looking at previous Yelp photos and even checking out the bakery's website I was looking forward to trying what looked to be a cute, local Portuguese bakery! Oh the crush of disappointment..disgustingly, dirty looking bakery from the front windows to the rickety tables inside! Did I miss maybe a whole other hidden area of this bakery? Where was the decor and abundantly rich looking pastries posted on their website and shown on Yelp? The thick crusty breads @ least, where were they? I did see some rather deliciously yummy looking sweetbreads still in the pan right by the door, uncovered (in the height of flu season?) in a rather dirty, dusty looking cart. Well, I wasn't giving up..now on to the pastry..anything with real cream I hopefully asked.."no" I was told. So my choices were limited to about 10..looks like they were made hours ago pastry items in a case, some soups in styrofoam cups and I think some sorry looking pre made sandwiches. The only plus was the group of Portuguese women sitting at some tables who looked to be enjoying some afternoon treat..bravo to you ladies..braver women than me for eating here and thanks for giving me continued hope in finding a Portuguese bakery of standing somewhere still in the "city"! read more

My wife's family is from New Bedford and I am from Florida so I tried the native sweet bread and it was good. Our daughter was just up to visit her boyfriend 1/9-10/16 and stopped by your store. Your sweet bread is better than I remember and my mom in law is in heaven on earth at 94, and proudly is wearing your shirt. Your Malassadas made her very very happy also. The other items were a big hit too. Your store will be seeing a lot more of us in the future. Keep up the good work. If possible could you put on your website or Facebook but somehow put information out about Sodium and Sugar content and serving size. This will be a huge help to the aging and older generations. Went into this shop and had horrible experience. The girls behind the counter very rude and unprofessional. Coffee was horrible, could tell it had been sitting there for a long time. Ask them to make me a new one and they refused. Also got a pastry and it was not fresh. Complained to the manager on duty and she never apologized and didn't offered to fix the problem. She just gave us more attitude. Will never go back here. Customer service here is horrible. Will take my money elsewhere. read more
