I am a 53 yr old doctor who lives in ny. I live around a great amount of influence and am in the arena of perfect designer dressing from hair to shoes. Never having the money to wear any of the seasons designers clothes, I did try and pick up a piece or two on sale at the end of the season. I always thought a great pair of shoes, handbag and the mantra of " hi - low" would get me by. Over the last 2 years I realized I had some great pieces in my closet but had no idea how to put them together or how to think outside of the box. And I didnt know how to find a stylist who would work with a budget, Until I met Barbra.... I purchased Barbra's services off of guilt group on a blind whim. I had never met her, seen her work or had even spoken to her. I knew I needed her though. I NEEDED someone to sift through my clothes and create outfit options for me. I didn't want to be obligated to a stylist who only shops retail because I have 4 NYC private schools to pay for. Not an option particularly in this economy. Barbra has the perfect business paradigm for normal people who want to look great. Her thinking is awesome. Firstly? Everything is about reworking or consigning. She does an intake phone call before you meet her which could go on forever because her energy is much fun. (you hang up feeling like you just talked to your best friend!)then she comes bubbling into your home with a huge suitcase of consigned clothing from either her own clients or from Decades 2 in LA. The hottest and highest end consignment store for all the stylists and their actor clients. Then you get down to work. She is a magician with styling. Things I didn't even know I owned and things that I hadn't worn in years, she made hip, current and edgy. She styled my mothers 45 year old velvet Pucci maxi skirt and it rocked. I could go on and on. I ended up spending two afternoons with B and cld have used two more. I took pics of every outfit with accessories and shoes, bags. I refer to those pics every time I go out. Moreover, people notice. I get so many compliments on how I look and I can feel people tracking me when I go to a restaurant. Barbra has given me new insight onto dressing and how to present myself. Working with a stylist might seem like a total splurge, but when I had an unexpected career change -- it was time to let go of the past and enter the new (fiercer) future. It now became a necessity. I first met Barbra at an event at Beckley's on Melrose. She was part of a group of experts discussing the importance of fashion on image and branding. After I heard her no-nonsense eco-friendly approach to styling (reuse, repurpose, recycle -- THEN buy something new), I knew I wanted to work with her. Of course it didn't hurt that she is also a British Vogue online correspondent and a published author of Closet Control. Any way, she takes her business SERIOUSLY. Prior to her first power session with you, she advises you to get plenty of rest and eat something because it is going to be intense. Wow. This was kinda like the advice I got prior to doing my first Triathalon last year. And then we went for it. Years of clothes and shoes were thrown out, and things were repurposed and reworked to create things I didn't think of putting together. Old faves were retired, but that ultimately made room for new faves. This was some serious therapy as I was sooooo attached to my stuff, even though I hadn't worn things in years. Some stuff still had tags. Anyway, I have a better sense of what woks for my figure. She also strongly suggested that I rethink my attraction to expensive handbags, and invest that money elsewhere in my wardrobe. I still refuse to let go of Marc and Louis and Yves, but I haven't bought anything new. This makes the BF very happy. read more

Barbra....whatever you think a stylist is, Barbra really isn't. This is not a service designed for the rich and famous. When I dropped the $500 plus for the three hour appt, I had no idea that it would pay for itself. I felt like a frumpy housewife and Barbra taught me how to be bold and brave in my wardrobe choices. She pulled out things that I never wore, and she showed me how to wear them in a new and modern way. She also took my outdated, old stuff and she consigned them for me. I literally got checks in the mail for things that I would have discarded. Barbra has a really unconventional way of putting outfits together, and she has a great sense of humor. Some of her outfits were a little too daring for a conservative mom like myself -- but the whole experience really taught me that fashion is fun! read more

I highly recommend using Barbra Horowitz as a stylist! I am plus size. At least at the moment. Having struggled for years with body image, self esteem, parents who were tiny and couldn't understand why I couldn't squeeze into a smaller size.....I decided it was time to hire a stylist. I found Barbra online and checked her reviews on Yelp (I did the same thing with a few other stylists, too). She got back to me promptly and was really friendly and down-to earth. I agree with what everyone has said on Yelp---she's so warm and friendly that she makes the process much easier to deal with than what I thought it would be. I've seen the people cry on "What Not To Wear," just like everyone else has! Although she asked me to get rid of some things that I didn't want to part with at first, I see now how she was absolutely right and that now that I own fewer clothes I actually enjoy what I've got left more. She showed me how to put together outfits using items I already own, which is a huge plus. She gave me a few "rules" about creating length and a streamlined silhouette as well as ways to incorporate up-to-the moment trends without breaking the bank. She taught me how to have fun with clothes and accessories while still looking professional and put-together. Although Barbra doesn't specialize in plus size clients, she was easily able to adapt to my specific challenges and the emotional issues that go along with them. She was very resourceful in helping me find plus size fashion outlets as well. Barbra is a wealth of ideas and connections. She connected me with another of her plus size clients to trade tips, took some of my items to pass on to others and brought some things to pass on to me, helped me measure for hems and the tailor so pieces I already own will now fit perfectly. Although it wasn't cheap, in the long run I'll save money because I will no longer buy clothes and shoes that don't fit quite right, aren't flattering, and ultimately get donated without even removing the price tags. read more

Working in the male dominated tech world I was getting way too comfortable wearing my same old jeans, t-shirts and flip flops to work everyday. I always longed to dress up more for work but never really knew where to start. One day I was searching through Gilt City NY and came across a deal that would give me a 2 hour styling session with Barbra. I did a little more researching on the web and found out that Barbra wrote a book called "Closet Control" The title alone spoke to me so I bought it immediately. Reading that book cover to cover and watching the DVD that came along with it illustrated how a session with Barbra would go. I knew I found the right person to sort me out fashion wise and after a few email exchanges with her I was sold. With an open mind, I began my "therapy" session Barbra. Given my bedroom is tiny I laid out every piece of clothing I owned out in the living room. Seeing my closet explode out into the living room was quite a sight. One by one we went through every shirt, shoe, bag, coat, etc. During this whole time Barbra asked questions about me. Where I want to go in life, in my career, etc. Along the way she made funny comments like "Where is the little boy that was wearing this stuff?" As I looked upon clothes I ended up donating, since they were way WAY WAY out of style, it really did look like an Adidas, Puma lovin' kid was rocking out in these clothes! Not exactly the image I'd like to shout out to the world. So at the end of the first part of our session I was pretty much left with nothing but the clothes on my back. Not to worry! For the 2nd part of the session, Barbra came prepared. She whips out her bag of beautiful clothes, jewelry and bags. I felt like I was looking into Mary Poppin's magic carpet bag wondering what other magical pretty things would come out. All these designer labels started flying out like Gucci, Helmut Lang, DVF, etc. and I actually fit into them!!! Full disclosure... I'm a very short curvy 5'1" Pinay who thought she was a size 14/16 yet there I was rocking Stella McCartney and other awesome designers, looking damn good too! :) Oh and did I mention... the designer clothes, jewelry, bags, etc were DISCOUNTED!! What more could a gal want!? After my session with Barbra I re-read the first & last chapters of her book. It was cool to see she really does practice what she preaches. This first session was a wonderful therapeutic experience. It was uplifting and really refreshing to see my closet FINALLY rid of items I really didn't need. Now it's filled with items that work for me and reflecting where I want to go in life. I always thought personal stylists were for the rich and famous. I am definitely neither. I live in San Francisco and worked with Barbra on one of her business trips up here. I'd been whittling down my wardrobe so I chose to have her take shopping rather than styling what I already owned. I really wanted to go in a new direction; casual but stylish. Nothing to flashy or trendy but current and could still be worn for a couple of years. Barbra delivered in spades! I could not have been happier with what I brought home and have been pairing with the clothes I already owned. She had me take pics of my closet so she got a sense of what my current style is and then we had a phone call to discuss what I wanted out of our time together. Barbra has been my "go to" every time I have an entertainment industry event to attend. Now that my hair is turning grey, Barbra's touch has changed me from the oldest guy at the table to "the silver fox" (no lie...that term was used last month and it has more to do with Barbra's insights than my actual hair). I worked with Barbra in 2006 when I was going through a bad breakup. I needed to revamp my image and Barbra's help was invaluable. We did a complete closet makeover and concluded with a shopping trip. At one point, she had chosen clothing that I never would have even looked at, but when I saw how fabulous I looked, I cried. Talk about a much needed style rehaul - Barbra elevated me to some serious swag. She captured a whole new level to me that I forgot was there. I'm enough of a guy's guy to not be super into fashion, but my business requires a different level of commitment and effort. I showed up to our appt in my baggy dad jeans. I was extremely skeptical to even use a stylist having had a bad experience with a previous one. But Barbra was AMAZING. She is seriously Fashion Cocaine. I am addicted and I am NOT a fashion person. I worked with Barbara last spring and I can't wait to do it again this fall. Barbra is energetic, inspired, funny and most of all incredibly talented. I joked with her that she was like a fashion savant, as she tore through my wardrobe and pulled pieces I had not used in years to make amazing outfits. Were these my clothes?? In two hours she must have come up with 20 new outfits using the things I already had but giving them a new spin and me a new confidence wearing them. To be fully honest, I was exhausted by the end of it and left the session feeling a little "spun" (she has you take photos which is helpful so that you can remember what you did) BUT, I have to say the best part came in the weeks and months after we worked together. it seems like everyone on here so far has talked about how much time & money barbra has saved them, and it's so true!! it does seem extravagant to hire a stylist - it seems like something only someone with lots of expendable income would do - but it's really incredibly practical! it is also for anybody at any stage in their personal fashion evolution. if you feel like you dont know what to wear, call barbra. if you feel like you're in a rut, call her. if you love fashion & want to be pushed to a new place, call barbra! i work in a really non-creative industry, but i consider myself a pretty creative person. i put a lot of effort into my appearance as an outlet, but i felt like i was sort of repeating the same idea. i wanted to get some advice - am i doing the best things for my body? are my looks outdated? does this piece really work or do i just love it? i love this piece can we please make it work? i'm not an off-the-rack size so i have to work at finding flattering pieces that dont look frumpy or boring. barbra came in & in a couple of hours had me in outfits out of my closet that i never would've put together. things that i loved styled in a new way & looks that were significantly more flattering than what i had been wearing. i wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone or how i thought i should dress. i wanted to go less anthropologie & more margiela. she did it for me! i still have a long way to go, but i'm so much closer than i was & i'm armed with ideas & tools & examples that i wouldnt have had without barbra. i also got the validation i was looking for to remind myself that i can pull this off. i carry a bag now that i got from barbra (she brings you things - amazing things - and finishes outfits with them) that is so far out of my normal consideration set that i wouldnt have even noticed it before much less bought it. but i absolutely love this bag. i feel confident carrying this bag. it makes me feel empowered in a weird way. like if i can pull this bag off, i can handle this day. no bigs. i am constantly complimented on it. it's a great feeling. but perhaps the biggest thing barbra did was push me to change my life a bit - just take a step i had been hesitant to take - that has opened me up to new opportunities & personal fulfillment that i had been missing out on. i needed to purge my closet. in a real way. it was getting out of hand. barbra came in & helped me sort through things - not necessarily going through every item i own, but giving me a template to work from so that the work i did on my own was so much easier. i had been sort of keeping idea in the back of my mind to try to create some sort of self-funding shopping model for myself b/c i really enjoy finding things, but then i end up with way too much stuff - the goal was to somehow sell my stuff & then be able to buy more & then sell that stuff. i didnt say anything to barbra about it, but halfway through my session, she said "you should start a website & sell your stuff on it. just bypass consignment & ebay & just do it yourself!" that little idea kindof changed my life. i went through all my things & was able to pull about 500 pieces that i loved but no longer needed. i had a little party to celebrate the launch of my site & i've since sold about 115 pieces! it's definitely not something i'm going to quit my job & pursue, but it has given me something to get excited about & put some of this creative energy into. it's just lightened up my whole life. i know that sounds a bit dramatic, but it's true. barbra encouraged me to be bold enough to present myself the way i want to be perceived, & she inspired me to create something that has made my life better & happier. not bad for an afternoon's work. barbra listens to you & genuinely wants to help. she really is more than a stylist. i told her she was just he little spark i needed to do the things i wanted to do. there's really no telling what can come from the time you spend with her. just show up with an open closet & an open mind! read more

Barbra is a very talented stylist. She really takes the time to get to know you as a person, listen to your needs for styling and executes on your need. Barbra understands that I need to look at the top of my game for my job. I am 55 years old, I am a wife, mother of two kids still in grade school and high school; and a masters athlete working out 6 times a week. I wear plus size and hired Barbra because I was tired of trying to work with in-store type shoppers/stylist who would dress me like a grandma or like someone who has no figure or style because I am a large person. Barbra has not tried to give me "cookie cutter" looks or styles. I know when I walk out the door I have a custom, up to the minute look. I know this because I am complimented almost daily on something I am wearing, how I look, or how my look is put together. I just found Barbra recently and she changed my entire outlook. I considered myself fairly stylish...but Barbra made me see that I was all jeans, jeans, jeans. I realized that I needed skirts and dresses and clothing that was suitable for my 40 years (but still sexy and awesome)! i have worked with Barbra several times over the past 8 years. This woman literally changed my life. She helped me get out of a rut because I was in an extremely busy work situation, and as a result, wardrobe was a low priority (I wore a lot of black). She is an excellent communicator, and she lets you know up front, how to best prepare for a session with her. She creates outfits out of clothes you aren't wearing, and put things together in a way you would have never imagined - she is just wired in a very creative and resourceful way. It's not just about clothes. She helps you with shoes, bags, jewelry, all of it. She also snaps a picture (with your camera) of each outfit you create, so that at the end, you have a photo library for reference. I love this, because whenever I'm feeling indecisive, I just look at the photos. Spending a couple of hours with Barbra saved me an enormous amount of time over the long run, because I had all these outfits put together, and I didn't have to stand in the closet and figure it out every morning. I started this process without knowing what I was doing back in December of last year. I was a busy mom of two kids, running around all day in uninspired t-shirts and jeans. I wanted to rediscover my love of fashion and simply dressing for dressing's sake! With the help of Barbra, I rediscovered the fun of getting dressed, and her creative energy ignited the spark I was looking for to kick start my own creativity. I now can't believe I was ever hesitant to call Barbra for help. I called in 2008 but chickened out and never set a date. I knew I needed help but didn't think I was doing any kind of work that justified the expense. It took me almost 2 years to get desperate enough to call back and finally pull the trigger. Simply put, YOU WILL BE THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF WHEN YOU HIRE HER. I originally called her to help me for a specific function. I was woefully out of date in the clothing I already owned and knew it. I just didn't know how to fix it. Almost all my clothes were repurposed for my 23 year old daughter and she instantly became sophisticated instead of her still-in-high school look. (you know, t-shirt and jeans) This recycling really helped with the shock of realizing that I had to start from scratch! I think I picked boring clothes because I didn't like the extra weight I was carrying but Barbra's styling made it look like the pounds had been magically removed. A new confidence was the result of her keen eye and savy shopping. When my husband got a glimpse of the changes we'd made he joined in the fun. You would not believe the transformation Barbra gave him. People who knew him didn't even recognize him at first! He now looks less like a 9 to 5, mall bought, suit and tie guy. my husband miraculously 'found' Barbra online about 6 years ago! we live in NYC and are originally from Cali. So he thought of hiring Barb as my solution to not only save money, but to also work with the small space/closets, and to work with what i have. After working with Barbra for about 4 hours alone on my closet, she helped me style 70+ outfits with what i already owned and had about 10 trash bags full of tailoring, give-away and resell items. It was definitely physically exhausting but so worth it! I started to consign clothes to friends and to a few stores. In turn, i was making money to then buy the things i 'needed'. We actually shopped together for a few hours to find the things that i needed to make my outfits work together. She also made me realize that just because you love something, you don't need it in multiple colors...use your money towards something 'else'. I also learned how to accessorize too! Barb will turn you on to up and coming designers who will get noticed by the big fashion books about a year later...so it's SO cool to already be 'in the know' ahead of everyone else! I thought i was high energy...Barb is SO passionate about what she does and is so great at sharing her fashioin secrets with you. So take good notes!! Even after having 2 kids these past few years, she helped me through my pre and post baby outfits so that I wouldn't be depressed! We went to affordable places to get some fun outfits while i was in this 'transitional' phase.
