I don't tend to use the word "funky" often, but I'd not hesitate using it when describing a place like Barbie Deinhoffs. But not funky in a bad way, rather in a fun, eccentric one. Within the first couple weeks of living in Berlin, a British acquaintance brought me here. The atmosphere is relaxed, with lots of chairs and sofas in the two rooms. Reminded me of 1970s decor, with a bit of French flavoring thrown in for good measure. There's also a DJ at times, and the music selection is interesting. I came back again when an American acquaintance was in town and my reaction was the same. We enjoyed kicking back and relaxing on a comfortable couch, and there were a couple dogs hanging out too, which made the atmosphere especially homey. As for the drinks themselves, the beer selection is not exactly my favourite, but it's OK. Also, the bartender made me pay an extra euro per drink when I ordered our second round. The sign says the first drink costs an extra euro, so I was a bit annoyed that we arrived before a DJ and were charged after the fact. But maybe it's just a semantical issue, in which case the sign should be rewritten to specify that it's the first drink after the DJ arrives which costs, regardless of how long you've been there. Najaaaaaaa. I think I read a sign mentioning 2-for-1 Tuesdays as well, so that's incentive for coming back again. But really, if you're just looking for a cool place to relax and talk, give it a try. read more

Firstly, I'd like to say that this is a very cool dive bar, it's fun and the atmosphere is lively. However, my experience was greatly tainted last night was one of the bartenders refused to grant me my correct change. Something like this has never happened to me before and I'm shocked at how he handled the situation. I bought two drinks, totaled at 6.50, and paid with 20 Euros. I received 3 Euros back and when I brought this up to my bartender he told me "there's nothing I can do about it." He advised that we wait until midnight when he would count the cash drawer, so we waited until 12:30 and when we approached him, he begrudgingly counted the drawer and in the middle of counting, gave up, saying that it was impossible to figure out. We were again told there was nothing he could do and then he told us he "didn't give a shit." I live in New York and deal with bartenders all of the time, but this is such a bizarre experience I felt the need to let future customers know. I really wouldn't advise going here when customers are treated with a really unnecessary disrespect, there are plenty of other bars in Berlin. read more

NEVER GO HERE. As a gay man, I was so excited to go to Barbie Deinhoff's to spend time with friends in an accepting environment. When I paid for my drink, I clearly remember handing the bartender a 50€ bill, but he only gave me 3.50€ back in coins, saying that I gave him a 10. I remember giving him a 50, because I looked through my wallet and felt disappointed my lowest bill was a 50. I argued with him a few times but was unable to get my money back. All the bartenders saw and didn't do anything about it. This completely ruined my night because that's all the cash I had. Even though I'm a tourist, the disrespect was unbelievable. I would never return and give -5 stars if I could. If a manager sees this reach out to me I want my 40€ back. read more

I came here on a Thursday around 10pm after reading a recommendation of this bar in a gay Berlin tourist guide. The bartender was extremely nice and when we arrived it seemed to be entirely queer clientele. However, as the night went on we became some of the only queer people in the bar as straight American tourists came in large groups and screamed over each other. I wonder if this place is nice later in the evening or on other nights. Too bad this bar lost much of its queer charm the night we went. read more

We came here after a recommendation from the guardian as a good "dive bar". Been to a few great dive bars in Berlin, always a good vibe, friendly bar staff good tunes. Sadly I can not say the same for Barbie Deinhoffs. The bar staff were the most rude people I have ever encountered, they got very angry at not tipping them (this was before giving me our change, giving me no chance to tip!) The drinks were very expensive for a few beers to begin with, especially for somewhere described as a dive bar. We were also asked to give a tip for the dj, when he arrived, again something I felt our barmaid was annoyed at asking for. Fair to say we left pretty quickly went to a bar with better vibe. Ive also read on yelp that this bar was in a gay tourist guide, I didn't feel it had a gay scene at all so if thats what your looking for go to somewhere better like roses instead. read more

one of my favorite bars ever and anywhere. its small, its dark, its dancey. they have a ridiculous cocktail list and they are lovely friendly people who work here. it's dicey which i super duper love love love. you can smoke inside as you drink fantastic hemingways. ok so thats what i did. just typing this makes me wish i was there... go to barbies when in berlin xoxoxoxo read more

The place itself was definitely cool in terms of decoration, but too many downsides: the bathroom didn't work (when you flush, the water came leaking onto your feet), the drinks were watered down and the creme de la creme was the service. We were excited to go as we'd read great reviews and it looked like a fun place. It was our last night in Berlin so we figured it'd be a good way to start the night. Our drinks came out to 5 Euro. My friend handed the bartender a 20 and got 4 euro back. When she protested that he'd given her the wrong change, he said he couldn't be sure, she could be lying, and that he'd have to check the cashier at midnight to double-check. It's 11:45 at this point, so we decide to wait. 12 comes around and he still hasn't checked the cashier...12:15 and still nothing. At 12:30, we decide we want to move on, so we calmly approach him and ask him if he's had time to check the cashier. He gets angry, slams the door to the employee area, and starts finally counting. At 12:45, he turns around, says he actually can't do the math, that he never promised us anything, that he doesn't give a sh*t about how we feel about it etc...cussed us out of the bar, mind you we're two 24 year old women, we've been maintaining a normal tone etc... Have never been treated so poorly to the point of needing to warn people about it. He scammed us 15 euro and wasted an hour of our time. read more
