It normally gets to the stage when I'm walking down the street and feel my hair at a certain point, I'll just walk into the next hair salon I see. However, having passed The Barber's Shop on several occasions, I made a mental note to make use of their services the next time my hair inevitably reached the point where I ceased to look like a human and more closely resembled some sort of yeti. The Barber's Shop is the best of both worlds, modern and sleek, but designed to evoke the classic, traditional barber shop feel of a bygone era (complete with spinning pole outside!). They've got various Birmingham City Football Club merchandise on the wall, giving the place a real local feel. The look isn't the only thing reminiscent of days gone by; the prices are fantastic, just £7 for a gents cut. I've never even had to wait when using The Barber Shop, but should you have to, there's a great selection of magazines and some cushiony sofas to occupy you. One of Birmingham's best.

This isn't a 'one size cut fits all' barbers, I got exactly the super short back n sides I asked for, n just the right amount off the top. It was quite busy today, being a Saturday, but they had at least 7 barbers on the floor working professionally and to high standard with each customer. An amazing thing about Turkish Golden Scissors is that even when busy they won't rush the individual they are looking after. When it is your turn, and you see there is a queue, the barber never lets you feel that he has to rush; but your his/her priority for however long he/she is with you. I was asked if I wanted a drink, and I had my favourite Turkish tea which is a great drink to have while you wait. Had a pleasant chat with the barber too who asked questions about me and they were genuine. All I'd say is that there is no uniform way of cutting or styling your hair, so you don't know who you will see, how he will treat you and what will you look like at the end. But, I've not had a bad experience yet, and by the looks of everyone, I don't think I will. However, some have done a better job than others. Overall, will keep coming back for the spar-like treatment.

Offering wash, cut and style from just £10 their services are very reasonably priced. Seeing that they offer a traditional shave and that I'm off camping tomorrow, I go in for this service as I want a close shave so I'm not looking too feral by Monday morning. My face is prepared by the way of a very hot towel; the stylist tells me that this opens up the pores and expands the skin on the face and will allow him to get as close a shave as possible. Then he rubs a light lather into my face. Then the moment of trust is upon me! But, of course I have nothing to fear, and 10 minutes later, I'm out of the door with a face as smooth as a baby's doo-dah. At £10 it may seem steep but it's nice as treat for special occasions.

It's a proper barber with cut throats, how towels and even ear flaming. Very relaxed. The boys keep up some pretty funny bantz between themselves and the regulars. They are quite skilled. They can handle my hair, which can turn into a complete mess - thinning on top, very fine, tends to point every whichway If not cut correctly. At other barbers I've walked out with a lopsided friar tuck hairdo. Not a problem here, 3/3 so far. Based on what I've seen on other clientele, they're quite experienced with the greaser/rockabilly/hipsters hairdos that you punk kids are into. Sedge is the more experienced of the pair, if you're after something exotic. The limited space/staff means that if you catch them at a busy time you'll have to wait. Usually 2 or 3 people in front of me whenever I turn up on a Saturday. 10 quid for a cut. Totally worth it.
