I got skipped twice. Okay I'll give them the benefit of the doubt even though I made an appointment and I was on time. And two people were late to their appointment and went ahead of me. It ticked me off but whatever I let it slide. Then one of the barbers is a bit rough with his clippers. I'm not asking him to caress my head but damn no need to dig the clippers into my head! I will never return here again. There is a lot of hype about the place but I personally got a terrible haircut and the service was awful and not professional. My barber would not shut up when he was cutting my hair. I don't mean to rude I don't mind a little small talk when getting my hair cut but the guy was having conversations with three other people in the shop, and kept turning away from my hair to deal with them. He was paying more attention to the television than to me. I looked up at one point and saw him watching the TV WHILE CUTTING MY HAIR. Let me repeat that. He was wielding a pair of scissors and a razor near my HEAD while he was visibly paying attention to the tv. He wasn't facing me at all; his scissors were in his hands and cutting my hair, and his head was turned 90 degrees to his right. As a result of this, I have cuts from a razor all over my neck and haircut that looks like it was done by a 5 year old. read more

I have been coming here for 7 years. Unfortunately I need to find a new barber in Chico, as they have no regard for the safety of their community. Went in this evening and 3 of 4 barbers are unmasked as were all customers. Haircuts require a lot of close contact with your barber and an unasked, potentially unvaccinated barber in close contact with contact with countless of customers each week is a danger to our community. read more

I have been going to Barber John's for at least the last 15 years. I have seen this shop go through ownership changes and a lot of upgrades. It is still a hole in the wall type shop with a long waiting list if you don't mind to wait. (Make an appointment online!) There are also a lot of barbers that have come and gone. I have never been disappointed! They stick to the old fashioned Barbershop style still today. Yesterday, Shawn cut my hair and trimmed my beard. He asked me a question I have never been asked before sitting in a barber chair of what I wanted. He showed me illustrations of what he meant. I pointed, and said I wanted a blend of the two. He did just that! I told Shawn that I was going to escort my Wife to her 20yr Highschool reunion. He made sure to make me look extra sharp. Well, I wouldn't say this was a GREAT place, but it is your average barbershop. I found nothing to be extraordinary, but also found nothing to worry about. Other than the fact that they do shave your neck with foam, they didn't do it around the ears or along your sideburns. This is what a TRUE barber would have done. Also, I was pointed towards a TV instead of the mirror. I like to see what the barber is doing. Its my head and my mop, so I have to live with it after the fact. I can watch a TV in the mirror if I want to see a football game. The place needs some serious cleaning up and straightening up. I guess since they cater to mostly students it doesn't really matter. I, for one, was expecting an old barber chair in a traditional barbershop complete with straight-edge razors sharpened on a strap. And, although the gal was a good barber, I would have preferred a man. After all, a barbershop is a man's world and sometimes we just want to be away from the women for a bit. No hard feelings, ladies, but its why I don't go into 'salons'. Can't talk s**t with ladies around. Wouldn't be respectful. A bit pricey, since you can get the same haircut, minus shave, for around $7 in Chico. Not sure I'd go back. Maybe I'll wait until I'm in Little Italy in SF and visit my old barber friend, Vito. After numerous bad haircuts at other local businesses I decided to give Barber Jon's a try. I happened to be on that side of town and figured "why not?" My hair was cut by Tammie. She was very polite and made pleasant small talk throughout the duration of the haircut. She didn't rush through the job but didn't take too long either. Unlike most other places I have been, at Barber Jon's I was not facing a mirror while my hair was being cut. Because of this I couldn't see the progress of the haircut as it happened. However, I was very pleasantly surprised with the outcome once I was spun around to face the mirror. Tammie did a great job despite my admittedly vague description of what I wanted. She actually cut my hair better than I could have described how I wanted it cut. I plan to return to Barber Jon's for my next haircut. read more

The other day I received my final haircut from the best barber shop I've been to. This is not only due to the great quality of the haircuts but also for the surrounding environment. Barber Jons encompasses a great supporting staff that is always joking around, a clean shop, pool tables and magazines for those waiting for the chair, and ESPN on three different tvs so that no matter where you are, you will be able to see what's on. It was all this that kept me coming back time and time again before I was ushered out of the great town of Chico due to graduation, but upon telling Jon that it was my last time, he asked me where I would be living next and messaged me the best barber shop around my new area as well as their phone number, my numbers and sizes I had been using at Barber Jons and then he wished me a good luck in the future. I don't know about you, but people just don't do business like this anymore, but because BJ's does, I'm guessing this the reason they are constantly busy and loved by all who give them their business. Long overdue ... I've been getting my head shaved and beard trimmed at Barber John's for 4-years now. Phil and Fern have been my go-to chairs .... their straight razor shave is flawless, attentiveness to detail unmatched (e.g. taming my old man unibrow in training), and beard trim stellar. Oh, and their chair-side banter is legendary. As a self-professed vintage nut, these guys get it right. They should become *your* local barber. Fern & Phil also free-hand trim my beard with just clippers - it's pretty rad to watch. read more

I took my boys here the last few times they had their hair cut and even took my daughter in. It's a little more than the cost of a normal kid's haircut but cheap/decent for the cost of the average adult's cut. They are pretty good, so I'm going to keep taking them. We've been to a lot of places in town and sometimes don't come back to the places after the first time, as I keep looking for that great hairdresser that knows how to cut boys hair. I think we've found the place. They are no thrills, and go by appointment, *which they honor.* You can pretty much book an appointment the same day, no problem, unless it's later in the day (I've found). They offer great magazines, red licorice and a golfing video game for free. Everyone there is nice. The last time we were there, one of the gals had tomatoes and zucchini from her garden out for customers to take. Great place for college students, men coming home work as well and people with hair that is either challenging or that one finds haircutters just can't seem to get right. I've noticed this merely from watching customers come in and leave happy just from the few times I've been there. read more

Barber Jon's is by far my favorite place to get my haircut. I usually have Jon or Phil cut it, but all of Jon's barbers are very good. The atmosphere is nice and relaxed, featuring flat screen TVs and a pool table. Every one there is friendly and make you feel very welcome. They give great hair cuts. It is hard to find someone to cut mens hair right. The place is under new management so if you tried it before and did not care for it try it again. The list method is gone and you make appointments. I like the list method better. You just call in the morning and when you show up you are the next person in line. Problem was a lot of new people did not understand this and would get upset. I recommend Phil he gives the best hair cuts. read more

I think it's "Jon's" not "John's", but I might be wrong. But nevermind that, the haircut is one of the best I ever had. Jon is an old-fashioned, straight talking, cool old man. Forget that square or rounded back of the head business; Jon will give you a fade all the way down, which is something you don't see any more. He also shaves the back of your neck with hot foam, which feels pretty damn good. Basically, this is the place to go to get a man's haircut at a very reasonable price. But go when they open at noon, or you could end up waiting for a while. Yet, it's worth the wait. read more

I leave yelling at people to come see how good I look. Demanding them to feel how smooth the back of my neck is from their straight razor shave. I'd come back every day if my hair grew fast enough.
