A nagging 'thickness" around my knee that was causing discomfort with any kind of squatting had convinced myself that this was part of "getting old". While scaling workouts, I tried to accept my bum knee as my part of the journey of getting old. I had been (and still am) skeptical of a doctor's visit to evaluate what's "wrong" with my knee as I feared the treatment plan would include "rest", or even worse, to be told to "stop" doing certain things that I can't live without. While working with Ryan, I have learned how and why my knee reacts to certain exercises and mobility work. I have not only become MORE mobile with the targeted exercise plans that he developed each session, in and out of PT sessions, but I have also become more aware of the positioning of my entire body, which helps with most exercises in Crossfit (or any sport!). I have also learned how important it is to mobilize and pay attention to all joints that need to be paid attention to as I put my body through high intensity on a daily basis. The philosophy of performance driven plans and individualized programming for targeted needs is different from any other "doctor recommended" plan. I am extremely satisfied with the services I've received at Barbell PT and Performance. I've been dealing with a neck strain/upper trap strain since starting CrossFit 4 years ago. It's flared up maybe 4 or 5 times. I tried chiropractic care and various methods of self-imposed body work (percussion massage gun, EMS, foam rolling/lax ball smash), but nothing seemed to rid me of my injury completely. I decided to see Barbell PT and Performance after my most recent flare up. I wanted to get healthy once and for all and prevent the injury from recurring. My therapist at Barbell PT and Performance was able to properly diagnose my injury within our first visit and provided the first steps of my recovery plan the next day. When I first sought out Ryan's help, I realized that the current physical therapy program I was in wasn't pushing me and wasn't engaging me enough for better results. I had a pretty large ganglion cyst removed from my wrist. I was a former dead lifter, and this injury was directly affecting my ability to lift. Ryan's modern approach to PT got my life back on track. I just finished a 10-week program with Ryan to rehab a ruptured proximal bicep (no surgery). I met Ryan after a disappointing 6 months with a traditional PT. I hadn't made any progress and was feeling completely defeated. I was in pain all night and couldn't sleep, I could barely do chores or walk my dogs, and I certainly couldn't lift weights. I had been told by my previous PT that I'd never be able to lift weight over my head again and I should never go back to Crossfit. Ryan was the complete opposite. I'm an olympic weightlifting/ crossfit athlete who had dislocated my shoulder during a lifting session. I knew I was going to have to do PT if I wanted to lift again, and figured someone who specializes in working with lifters and understands the style of work-outs that I do would be the best choice. Ryan proved this notion right as I very much doubt a regular PT would program things like drop snatches. My pain did not very long after my injury so my main concern was strengthening my shoulder specifically to prevent another injury.
