I have a love-hate relationship with Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD). Trying to get to a connecting flight can be quite the walk. On my most recent trip earlier this week, the flight that I was on landed at gate 22 and I had to make my way to gate E10. I got an estimate of 19 minutes to walk over there. The good news was that my first flight was twenty minutes early and I had nearly 1.5 hours to make it to concourse E. What I love about ORD is the shopping and the quick bites that I can get. Garett's Popcorn is my go-to snack. On my way over to concourse E, I passed by Barbara's Bookstore and loved how it threw me back to a slower pace of life. It wasn't focused on technology. It was a charming bookstore that I grew up with before technology became prime. Physical books. Reading glasses. Postcards. Reading lights. Bookmarks. And, a lot more. What caught my attention was the display of Lamy fountain pens. I have never seen such an amazing assortment of fountain pens at any store in a major airport in my life! I own a purple Lamy pen that I enjoy using. It's comfortable and it's easy to swap out the ink. Cleaning the nib is straightforward. You can also swap the nib out if you're feeling fancy. I would love to own a clear (demonstrator) Lamy pen. This store had the one that I have been eyeing. I'd like one, but it wasn't a massive need. I enjoyed browsing around this store. It's a gem. Any store carrying fountain pens is awesome! If I am back and cave in, you'll see me with a Lamy demonstrator next time. (379)

Alyssa was extra kind and helpful at check-out. She wished me a safe flight and a great day! I bought a book, a pair of cute reading glasses, and a bunch of Chicago decals. Great selection of books, postcards, decals. Wonderful service.

I really wanted to get a good book for my flight, and I found one at Barbara's Books. The employees on duty were so friendly, I wanted to write a good review! I can't wait to start my new book

Interesting selection of new releases....see pictures.... Small Store..which is one of several located in O'Hare Airport. Also there are a few racks of Papyrus Cards which are classy.

    Books! Of course!

It's a pain to return a book here. Lots of paper signing, telephone calls, etc. i'm not one to return things, but I bought a book for a friend and then was told he already have it. I had to return it. It was still in the bag and untouched. There was a lot of questions like "what's your reason" repetitively. They have a good selection of books and are usually affordable. When it comes to returning, they make it embarrassing and show unwilling attitudes. That's all.

A lot of bookstores curate themselves toward the big hits, and you don't often see a lot of attention paid to a wider variety of writers. Exile in Bookville is completely different: you can tell through the shelf talkers that the employees are passionate about books (and music, as witnessed by the music selection and the owner's vinyl collection). I also like the idea that the books are there for you to find, like you're in a hunt for what you might like, giving you the chance to discover books you wouldn't have searched for otherwise. It's small but well packed, with a thoughtfully curated selection that is truly speaks to the love of reading and books.

Anyway, I brought my toddler to a show at the Studedekbaer downstairs and we thought we'd explore a bit of the building. Heading up to the bookstore in the building was of course part of that plan. It's tiny but mighty and they have a surprisingly large selection. They also had a really interesting coffee table book called The Fine Arts Building that I had to talk myself out of buying. Instead, we bought a copy of Roald Dahl's The Enormous Crocodile, which they had in stock because the show was playing downstairs. I'll keep an eye on their events and since I now know it's here, may pop in when I'm downtown in my office. No parking since it's downtown--unless you want to pay for parking--but it's just near the CTA and south side Metra lines.

It feels really cozy inside and I could spend an hour or so perusing the book selection. They also have a nice variety of bookish gifts and cards. The selection is not too bad, considering they are recovering from a flood. There are so many titles and a vast array of topics available. I found some classics, fiction, a wonderful selection in their non-fiction area, and translated books. They also provide you with lists of books that have won prizes or coincide with different regions in the USA and the world! I thought that was very helpful. It's a medium-sized store, but their displays are quite prominent. Everything is easy to grab (no ladders or staff needed to get to the high books). All the areas are labeled and it's visually pleasing. The staff was nice, too. Checkout was easy and they were friendly. Prices are standard of paperbacks and hardcovers. You are paying for an indie bookseller (I paid about $40 for two books, which includes tax). I wasn't at all disappointed with the price. They also have a loyalty program for those that are regulars. I really am happy I checked out this spot. It was beautiful and friendly. There was a lot of books and totes to chose from, it was hard not to leave with more in my bag!

Myopic books is stuffed to the brim with gently loved books found across three floors. Sometimes, the flooring can be a little uneven, or even a piece of lumber as if from a hardware store, but it is all part of the charm. It's such a pleasure to explore the nooks and crannies of the place and see what kind of books they have. Whether for yourself, as a gift, or just to see what is out there, it makes for a fun experience! The staff is friendly, helpful, and happy to help you find what you're looking for! The space is also inviting for those who'd like to relax with a book for a bit, rather than get, buy, and leave... and they do this without having a coffee shop on-premise. Final verdict: I am working on being more of a reader. If a bookstore is to help me do so, Myopic Books may just be the one. It finds itself on many of those "Explore IL" Facebook posts, and for good reason!
