Sometimes serendipity plays a big part in discovering a great place to eat: a hidden gem in the heart of the red light district, who would have ever guessed?
We often walk through Fields Walking Street to get to Balibago; however, we avoid it at night and on weekends because of the, let's say, colorful night life. We were having breakfast at Brettos, when Hubby spots a sign across the street advertising Baram's all day Filipino Silog (your choice of protein served with a fried egg and rice) breakfast specials. We're always looking out for cheap breakfast deals, so next day we're back.
From the outside this place look very unassuming, like a hole in the wall type joint. Walk in and your eyes are drawn to these two massive faux sakura trees decorating their dining room. We settled down in one of their cozy half booths.
Even though we were there for the cheap P99 breakfast, we still got their complimentary refillable banchan AND complimentary iced coffee with one refill OH YEAH! Their breakfasts are filling and come with an egg and delicious Java (sticky) rice. We had their cornsilog (corned beef) and tapsilog (tapa - cured beef); both were flavorful, tapa was tender but the corned beef was oily. Banchan (side dishes) were delish! The kimchi was too potent for me; but hubby enjoyed it. If you ask for hot sauce, you'll get chili oil. If you want something quick, you'll want to order their soups.
Friendly, hard working staff that come immediately when you hit the call bell, raise your hand, or call out. Place is roomy, clean, with a strong aircon, free WiFi and a fully stocked bathroom. Modern Filipino music playing in the background (heard a couple cool rap songs), sometimes it's pop music. This is THE BEST place for a Filipino style breakfast.
TIP - come during the week day mornings to avoid the night crowd from the red light district. read more
