Imagine one of those secret bars from the 1920's prohibition in America. You don't know how to get in, unless you're with someone who does. We found a metal door which we presumed was the entrance, rang some sort of bell and voila - enter Igor from the Adams-family. Only handsome. And in a tux. But his attitude was the same. More or less ;) It's the cooles thing to be in a bar that's just underneath the railway tracks at Friedrichstrasse station, and once inside you understand why this bar is so hyped. The prices are accpetable at an average of 9 euros per drink, but the female bartenders make them so well and with so much attention to detail, that I found myself giving the hard working bartenders a large tip for their efforts. Once you're on Friedrichsstrasse station find the S-bahn and follow the platform till the end, follow the staircase as far across the water as you can, cross the road and you should find yourself in front of a big metal door with a door bell on the left hand side. read more

Cool spot, warm reception...neat theme. Then not so cool. The crowd is super see-and-be-seen. Very NYC. Cocktail was fine, though the mean guy at the bar hitting on me? Couldn't get rid of him, and the bartender was zero help. I meander into the restaurant room to explore, and a waiter hands me a glass of wine. I mean, ok! But boy did he then head straight to my bartender when my back was turned and make sure a 14 euro glass of wine I didn't order was added to my bill. Gross. 14! Meanwhile the manager wandering around schmoozing all night never once comes over. Guess a single gal sitting at the bar isn't worth his time. Again, gross. It's worth a visit, albeit it's hip and poorly managed. I left angry, but in a group? Maybe better. But check your receipt, would be my advice. read more

If you come here and the sign on the door says "We're closed," don't worry. Just knock. Whoever answers the door will say, "Sorry we're close" and all you have to say is to repeat "But I want to come in" a couple of times before they'll let you in. Modeled after a speak easy establishment, this bar took place in an abandoned train tunnel. The decor is very black and very shiny. The menu consists of delivious craft cocktails, as I was told, but I only ordered a virgin drink. There's also a restaurant in the kitchen but it's closed at night. This a cool place to visit while you're in East Berlin. Prices are comparable to US bars. read more

Unmarked night spot beneath the train S-train bridge at Friedrichstrasse. There is no sign on the entrance, just look for an iron door under the train bridge and knock. What I love about this bar is that they don't let groups of young 20-somethings looking to party in. This is for a slightly more sophisticated and older crowd. I got a kick out of seeing a group of young girls getting turned away as we were being let in. It's not often that happens anymore :) The bar area is swanky and modern and quite the people watching scene. The effort of finding this place and getting in is worth it once you get to the bar: The cocktails are amazing - the bartenders know how to mix a drink! read more

This is the anti-Berlin establishment...in fact it's establishments like this that are leading to the death of Berlin as we know it. Hipster meets posh....a clash of ideals...it's the center of "schnoeseldom" in Berlin bereft of any class, fun, or style. The nondescriptive steel door that act as entrance does not give up much about what to be expected. Once inside you will find a venue perfectly suited for numerous after dinner drinks. Their Gin & Tonic is sheer perfection. The clientel mostly consists of slightly older, well heeled eurotrash and the well curated music selection that is played at high volume perfectly fits the bit blaséd seen everything been everywhere atmosphere. This is a five star DB club bar lounge. If you love DB clubs, and you are a DB yourself, you'd love this spot. However, if you're over being a DB don't go here. It is like any Hollywood crappy club, except it's far less ventilated. Smoke permeates the air more than at the penny slots in Vegas. The drinks are terrible too. I had two different drinks before I couldn't stand it anymore. So as my Samstag evening worked its way through I stopped by this hard to find spot with my first time to (true)Berlin Girlfriend. The bouncer looked hard at us as the two girls in front of us and showed up at the same time, but he allowed us (3 girls + 1 guy) to pass; tough door so crowds are not very welcome. There was an over inflated attitude from all the staff, that only dissipated when I spoke German and showed the equal amount of disdain. The drinks were rather pricey, but the top, bottom and middle shelf selections were pretty impressive. The bar staff had some great and epic cocktail concoctions up there sleeves. The smoke was a little rough, but hey, welcome to Berlin. With the decor, the yacht club commodore mock uniforms on the staff, and the great live band playing '70's & 80's American TV show songs I felt like I was in one of the cool Heineken commercials. We got there a little after 11 and it soon grew into a loud crowded and iconic Euro-hipster event...with the "cool Euro-casual" to the" just left a black tie party" crowd. Sounds a little daunting, but worth visiting as often as the wallet allows. read more

This is a truly hidden place. Underneath the S-Bahn bridge at Friedrichstrasse, one has to ring the bell on a rather unassuming metal door. Through the door (if they let you in), you find this eclectic restaurant totally decorated in black with rather moody lighting at the back of the bar. The restaurant houses a cool open kitchen, everything is freshly done and don't bother trying to come here without a reservation. We all went for the "best of starters" and "best of main dishes" and this turned out to be a good choice. We had a variety of tapas style starters, eaten with chop sticks and all of it was pretty excellant, especially the sashimi salad with miso dressing. We also enjoyed the cevice which is quite nice and unusual as this is a Peruvian dish. The grilled prawns with garlic and the grilled pepper - even though very tasty were more or less average. For the "best of main dishes" we had black cod with a sweet crust that melts on the tongue while eating. Also the beef was cooked just right and came sliced on top of a nice vegetable platter. With it came flavoured rice, coriander polenta and Japanese noodles in a miso-style sauce. Even thought we were pretty all stuffed by now, we still bravely went for two different desserts. These weren't too brilliant, to be honest, (eg. the Green Tea Creme brullee didn't taste much of green tea, and my chocolate pudding was a little overcooked) but our expections have been also very high after enjoying the fabulous dinner menu. The wine selection is tolerable, and not terribly cheap but still worthwhile. After so much food, we just about managed to stagger to the stylish bar to enjoy a few drinks. Also there, they had a lot of unusual exotic drinks compared to other cocktail bars. Overall, a very pleasant evening in an unusual place which should be visited if you are ever in Berlin. read more

My boyfriend and I recently visited Bar Tausend in Berlin and absolutely loved this place! The atmosphere was relaxing with it's nice, dark comfortable interior. The wall installation at the end of the bar is amazing. The DJ was playing an excellent mix of music. Though the bar was packed, the staff was attentive and provided immediate service. When back in Berlin, this place will top my list to visit again. The only "heads up" is it is very difficult to find. There's no sign, no light, no name just an iron door under the bridge by Freidrichstrasse railway station. It's worth the find. read more

Super comfortable. The illumination in the back of the room makes you feel as if you're in an elegant Speak Easy from the 1920's. The music is a nice touch, but sometimes out of place depending on the band. I prefer the crowd here to say Solar, which is better suited to the Brandenburg crowd. Bar Tausend is perfect for drinks after Grill Royale. Take care coz they don't stay open too late, which is a pity. read more

Bar Tausend - Sophisticated Boredom - or what a difference a day makes? Location / Design One of these typical Berlin bars not to be recognzed from the outside. Interior design can be characterized as "hotel sophisticated" (in contrast to the once hip "dump in the garbage" bars in the city. (7) Crowd: Door apparently among the toughest in Berlin and arguably completely random, ie no single outfit guarantees access. GI went on a very slow Wednesday and had no trouble getting in (as if that ever were a problem for a Global Insider!!). Crowd exuded "sophisticated boredom" - initially 90% guys but that improved a bit over time. (-) Food: The restaurant in the quiter half of the place offers "cool simplistic" food at elevated price. Menu ranges from Sashimi to NY Steak. Usually two rounds for reservations (pre/post 10pm). Definitely a big plus for the place. (7) Beverages: Champagne selection decent and luckily also a little bit exotic (like Bollinger Rose). Cocktails? - who cares? - champagne rules!! Overall Rating: Set-up, design, concept definitely sophisticated but needs to be visited another time for final verdict. Room without people does not do it! (-) read more

It is almost impossible to describe Bar Tausend. Except, it was an experience... We were led here by the hipster travel guides and the whispers of 'cocktail perfection'. We wandered around a while before deciding to take a chance on one of the completely unmarked metal doors we found under a railway bridge. We rang the buzzer and a hatch in the door slid open. We were in the right place! Ushered inside by the eccentric be-speckled doorman, we paid our €7 entry and took our coats to the cloakroom. We were then led inside the bar. The interior was slick, black and very, very cool. Fitted into the railway arches the mirrored ceiling 'scales' reflected the epic glowing bar and the giant 'sun' at the far end of the room. It was super dark but in a nicy edgy way. It never felt like it was trying too hard, and we were very comfortable. We took a seat and quickly one of the bar staff came to take our order. We did not try the food, so I can not comment on the restaurant. The drinks however were gorgeous; well crafted, interesting cocktails with delicious ingredients. The staff were super attentive without being annoying, and we were treated to a funky cellist playing an interesting mix of songs. The crowd inside were the most interesting part of the evening. There were overdressed women on their own, clearly looking for something special. Suited businessmen, some with much younger ladies. Groups of young, well dressed hipsters. You name it, they were there. As the evening progressed, we began to feel a little like we were in the middle of a secret society. That at midnight the crowd would become bloodsucking vampires and we their meal. We left at 11.55. read more

This is by far my favorite restaurant / bar in Berlin. The bartenders are excellent and they make some great specialty cocktails here. Food was interesting and delicious. One side is the restaurant and the other a bar/lounge. It was perfect to have dinner then walk next door for a cocktail and some good music. I can't say enough good things about this place. I'll for sure go back on my next trip to Berlin. read more

Tausend is super styled and would be a great place to shoot a movie or a music video. I have seen some good bands here: Hafergfocken swingers, Reverend Shine Oil, Osca. Overall if you like corporate style bars (like where you might have a drink with your lawyer) this place is for you. One day I'll get around to trying the restaurant. read more

Great place, my wife and I really enjoyed the drinks, the ambiance, and the service. Even when it got crowded our drinks were made in a timely manner. The music selection was perfect. The crowd was eclectic ranging from young to old, and it seemed everyone was having a great time. My wife I made friends with a couple from Amsterdam. The bartenders do a great job here. And to cap it all off, the bar provided cigars and being from America I took advantage of the Cuban selection. We will return to Bar Tausend when we come back to Berlin. read more

Update: had dinner here last night with a group in the back room restaurant Cantina. Was pleasantly surprised by the Asian-influenced menu we received. As we were 10 guys celebrating the closing of a business deal, I was expecting mediocre service and so-so food. Fortunately it was a great spread we received, including sushi, fish dishes, meat and dessert. Everything was really good. Further, service was surprisingly great. They took care of every wish. We had the guy who looks like a mix of 70's porn star, greasy biker and a bit of East Berlin thrown in. Very attentive, super nice and professional. I'll definitely be back for dinner here in the future. My review is getting an additional star because of the positive experience in the restaurant last night. This place seems to have left a good as well as poor impression on many writing here about it. I can't say I have many complaints. I found the interior to be quite cool and relaxed even though the place was pretty full when we came. We also easily walked in (but we also weren't a group of 10 guys.) I didn't hang out at the door long but everyone was courteous and I didn't hear much negativity while there. Once in, we gave up our coats...which I don't mind doing...why leave it laying around somewhere to only be stolen. Service at the bar was quick and the drinks were good. The area in the back where you can sit is quite comfortable. The lighting is well done. It still has a feel of being a bit underground but it also seems to obviously been "outed" at this point. Who knows, maybe the person accompanying me made for a better night than it would have been with another person but at the same time, this is a great backdrop for a good night out with friends, as every bar should be. read more

Very nic elocation with, Good atmosphere . a cool fancy place but more sneaker fancy. Creative cocktails aswell, and sometimes live music. I liked also the openkitchen. Cool enough location, but quite douchey... they're trying to be a bit too cool. We went here for dinner (10 people) and the bill was just under €1000, so appropriate name. Our sever admitted she was new, and we were understanding of that. But wow. Totally incompetent. Some of the highlights include refusing to bring us an extra wine glass, not knowing any of the drinks on the drink list despite us mentioning the name of the drink we like to order. She also didn't explain what any of the food they brought from our set menu was, so it was a bit mysterious as to what each thing was. I asked another server a couple of questions and he was very knowledgeable and helpful and funny. The food was quite good and it €55 a person, was reasonable. The next things were OK but quite small. We also got yelled at for trying to take a group picture. You're not berghain... drop the attitude. And yes despite the terrible service we still gave a hell of a tip... read more
