We met Dr. Shaw on our first appointment to go over how he would take over finishing out her treatment and after that we never saw him. Flash forward to the day my 8 year old is getting off her braces and is so very excited because not only is she getting them off but her birthday is the very next day! As a parent I was so very excited for this special day only to be let down because it was not a priority on Dr. Shaw agenda. We arrive and my daughter starts to have her braces taken off by Britney, during this time my daughter starts to state it hurts and then even has tears rolling down her cheeks! Britney not only seemed annoyed but tried to tell my daughter she isn't doing anything that hurts her and she is hurting her feelings by crying (Like are you serious you as an adult just said that to a child) Britney continues to work on my daughter and of course my daughter starts to cry again to where I finally had to tell her to stop and something is wrong because my daughter doesn't just cry and over react! Britney got up said nothing to us left us sitting in the chair with no explanation for 10 minutes, while other patients were seen and went and talked to Dr Shaw! Then Dr Shaw comes over to see what is going on to find one of my daughters tooth is loose and the pulling the braces And wire off was causing pain to the newly loose tooth. He was gentle and said he wouldn't clean the remainder or the glue on that tooth because it's going to come out anyways to spare Her any pain. Afterwards he said she is good to go, gave her a popcorn bucket full of candy and that was it! No sooner does he do that I immediately have another woman asking me to sign paperwork of release when I am just trying to capture a picture of this moment! My daughter gets told she can sign the wall and then that's it...no pictures no big Celebration or congratulations nothing, it was very disappointing for her and for me! When I walk to the front I ask Chandra (who has always been sweet every appointment we have seen her) if they take pictures with those that get their phase 1 braces off and she said no, that's for phase 2! I left feeling disappointed and hurt for my daughter who was in tears on a day she should be so excited! Only to see on social media that Dr Shaw does take photos with phase 1 patients who get their braces off but clearly we weren't important enough! Sad because up until that day a new family to Texas had referred those we knew and worked with to him and promoted his business via social media, but not anymore! Every patient should be important and picture worthy and no one who works with kids should make them feel bad when they cry...Britney maybe was having a bad day I don't know, but her words and treatment were horrendous to a 8 year old child! I wanted to love Shaw orthodontics and for a couple months did, until the day that was to be special and mattered was ruined! I realize my opinion and review is a minority but my experience to my child and myself did happen and I am not afraid to speak up!

Really enjoyed smile makers for the first year or so my son was a patient here. They even did very well through the Covid shut down. They managed patients at the new norm with what seemed to flow flawlessly. The last few months with them were less than ideal. The techs and ortho always had it together but their front office staff really seemed to struggle. My sons treatment went over the time estimated. Partly his doing but partly not. He had instruments (springs that cut his cheeks wide open, almost through the outside of the cheek) put into his mouth that did not work and they had to be removed and treated traditionally with rubber bands. It goes without saying that it took longer for this treatment with rubber bands partly his fault for not wearing them like he always should but it was also inevitable that it would take a little longer than the metal springs. We made it through freezes, snowmageden, etc. we even came to an appointment that was scheduled during a freeze because I wasn't sure if the office was closed or not and when I called and texted the automated line (that is "always monitored") I received no response, ever. When we arrived, the office was closed. When we returned to our next appointment, I was hounded for a $55 cancellation fee for my appointment. I guess when they don't inform you of closures and cancellations it's appropriate. An office lady argued with me that she sent messages out to patients but I did not get one. A fluke I suppose but none the less I wouldn't have driven on ice if I had the information that they were closed, common sense I think. Then when I told her I messaged them asking if they were closed I received no response. Well at that point since they didn't have my correspondence it was my fault but me not receiving their correspondence was impossible. Crazy how that works. Disclaimer, We did reschedule a few appointments assuming they wouldn't want him in office with me having Covid (4 times to be exact) and one appointment I for sure dropped the ball on. My fault. I'll take it. Towards his last appointment I was charged the $55 appointment cancellation fee due to too many appointment reschedules. In three years I think the total was five appointments rescheduled, I think. They implemented their cancellation policy towards the end saying the cancellations and reschedules of his appointments delayed his treatment and other patients also had a lot of cancellations so they had to do this across the board. Okay I'll give it to you even though I didn't agree with it. The last appointment we had was rescheduled by them, it's okay for them to reschedule I suppose. The day of his last appointment we had an appointment at 1030am and I received a call at 8-9 in the morning that I missed because he had a different appointment. I received another call stating I missed his 8am appointment and I would again be charged $55. I told the lady that she was wrong my appointment was at 1030 and we would be there for that appointment. She said his appointment was at 8 but they did have a 1030 appointment available if I'd like it. I again told her I would keep my original appointment and see them at 1030. A short time later I received a text message stating it was her mix up and his appointment was in fact at 1030 and when she rescheduled it, it was her mix up. Needless to say, I finally just had them remove his braces "before treatment was completed." My sons teeth were not even 1mm off from competition and since we were only worried about cosmetic issues, I didn't mind if it meant not dealing with their office staff anymore. Again the orthodontist and his technicians are great. Very friendly and good with the kids. The office staff could definitely use some training. The manager was my least favorite of the bunch. All in all not the most horrible experience I've ever had but the system is rather flawed and if you're looking for communication by office staff, this probably isn't the place for you.

While examining my son's mouth, she identified a tongue tie that had been missed by his dentist, pediatrician and speech therapist for 14 years. As a resident-trained orthodontist, her expertise in both traditional braces and Invisalign along with jaw growth modification is what gave her the knowledge to truly see the root cause of my son's issues. My daughter had fast braces done by her dentist, but it took three years and they still couldn't get one of her teeth to align properly. I should have brought her to an orthodontist like Dr. Sample. Speaking from someone who has done it both ways, I can confirm that orthodontics is very specialized and should be left to the orthodontists. Dr. Sample explained everything thoroughly and clearly, including why certain treatment options would work best for my son's specific needs. She was also willing to think outside the box for my son's jaw growth problems, including referrals to the proper specialist for oral-facial therapy and tongue tie release. Her expertise prevented us from needing jaw surgery! My son is autistic with many mouth sensitivities. Dr. Sample and her team were so patient with him. I am very disappointed with my experience at this office. We received inconsistent information from…read moredifferent providers about my husband's treatment. Initially, we were told that both impacted wisdom teeth needed to be removed with bone grafts. Later, another provider said only one tooth would need a bone graft. When we finally met with the oral surgeon, she advised us not to remove the right impacted tooth because it was lying sideways, very close to the nerve, and could cause permanent numbness. We ended up removing only the left tooth. The billing was just as confusing. We were charged for one hour of IV anesthesia (four 15-minute units), but the timeline simply doesn't add up. I left the treatment room at 1:03 PM, and my husband didn't even have an IV yet. At 1:33 PM, a staff member told me the procedure was finished and asked me to bring the car around. My husband walked out at 1:45 PM. When I questioned the one-hour anesthesia charge, I was told it included recovery time. That explanation did not make sense to me, especially when the actual sedation time appeared to be much shorter. Patients deserve clear communication, consistent treatment recommendations, and accurate billing. I have requested a detailed explanation of the charges and hope the office will review and correct them. Until then, I cannot recommend this practice.

We had just moved to Rockwall and were looking for a new dentist for the family. After doing some…read moreresearch on Yelp, I decided to give Courtin a try. The office is conveniently located on the I-30 frontage road with access from Ralph Hall so getting there was very easy. Everyone in the office was very friendly and helpful and my wait was less than a minute for my 9:00 am appointment. Since I was a new patient, they did a full mouth X-ray and periodontal exam. After that was complete, Mary (Courtin) introduced herself and discussed what they had discovered and a plan to keep me healthy. Together we looked at my X-rays (both new and previous X-rays obtained from my prior dentist), and discussed treatment options for areas of concern. Mary is very easy to talk to, and made me feel comfortable right away. You can tell that she has a passion for her job which is something that I feel is very important. Before doing any work, Mary's receptionist brought me a breakdown of the work that needed to be done with prices and expected insurance coverage. I've never had any medical professional do this before and was grateful to know what I could expect to be paying upfront before any work was completed. I could do everything right then, or pick the things that fit into my time constraints and budget. I had a full deep cleaning, as well as repair on a old filling, and in spite of being upside down in the chair for a bit, had no discomfort what-so-ever. Now (24 hours later) my mouth feels just fine and I'm relieved that I've found a dentist who is friendly, thorough, and professional. I can recommend Coutin without reservation to anyone looking for a good dentist in the Rockwall area, and am looking forward to a long relationship with Mary and her staff.

Steer clear of this place…read more Billing practices are questionable. Management was insanely rude. My husband and I both had awful experiences here and immediately found an alternate team. My husband had botched implant prep here with his dentist being hired and fired within the same month. When he went back for follow-up and placement with a new dentist they paired him with a provider that's out of network with our insurance (we had no idea that their team all take different insurances and they don't disclose that to you). We've called 3 times to have our claim submitted to insurance and it still hasn't been done. For myself, the cleaning tech was wonderful but then I met the dentist and he started making wild claims and recommendations about the condition of my teeth post-pregnancy. As a nurse practitioner I felt very uncomfortable by his bedside manner and sales behavior. I asked for a copy of my x-rays and the recommendations for a second opinion 4 times between phone and email and never received them. This office doesn't care about your budget, respecting your insurance policy, or adhering to a less is more/conservative approach. If you do decide to be treated here keep a close eye on your paperwork and research everything. In the mean time, I'm still working hard to get my booking deposit back (yes they make you pay $75 just to book a cleaning).
