Bar H has been around for a while now, and has quickly gained a reputation for providing exceptional quality food and service, at reasonable prices. Sydney has been somewhat lacking in good quality mid-range options (though things have certainly improved in the last few years), and that's exactly the place where Bar H sits.
Bar H is brought to you by husband and wife team Hamish Ingham (chef - formerly of Billy Kwong) and Rebecca Lines (restaurant manager/sommelier). The menu is constantly changing, with a focus on fresh, simple, seasonal produce.
Set on a corner location, with a large open window overlooking the street, Bar H is a dark, sexy, inviting bar. It's the kind of place, you can pull up a stool, kick back and enjoy a relaxing evening.
Mr M and I arrive for dinner on Friday evening, and it's just what we are looking for. We settle down on stools in front of the open window and instantly we relax and feel at home. The first thing we notice is the fast and friendly service, the second thing we notice is the understated, glam fit out. Nothing is over the top, the balance is just right.
Rather than focusing on entree/main/dessert, the menu is snack style and designed to be shared, with a distinct Asian flavour. If the menu choice is all too hard, you can always choose Hamish's Banquet menu at $75 pp.
This night we choose:
* Sashimi of Kingfish with Pickled Mushroom
* Crispy Prawn & Fish Wontons with Chilli Oil Dressing
* Sichuan Salt & Pepper Calamari with Green Chilli Aioli
The dishes are excellent, with the standout being the Kingfish Sashimi. Each dish is full of flavour, unfussy and simply executed.
There is an impressive wine list, with Australian, New Zealand and European options, as well as beers and a selection of interesting cocktails on offer. I must say the Bar H Signature Martini sounds like one to try...next time.
This is a great option for a relaxing evening with good company. You can be assured of consistently good food and service, and best of all, it wont break the bank. What more could you want?
Oh, and if you're looking to impress at your next dinner party, be sure to check out the 2 hour cooking course on offer with Hamish. Your secret is safe with me. read more
