If I'm being honest, this overly-hyped salt lick was not over the top good nor was it horrible. It was kind of middle of the road for me. I was so looking forward to this because all of the celebrity food vloggers and chefs have covered it when they visit Sao Paulo so of course it was on my bucket list to come and try. Buried in the center of the municipal mercado, you will pass many others spots hawking Mortadella sandwiches trying to find Bar do Mane'. Purists will resist the temptation of the imposters and make the pilgrimage into the masses to find this spot that has been cranking out this mass of meat on bread since 1933. Grab an open hightop table or a spot at the small bar and use your phone to read the QR code for a menu that comes in both Portuguese and English. There are a lot of different things to choose from but the classic mortadella sandwich is the thing and a small one will set you back about $7 USD. A large one with more meat is about another $1 USD. The small is plenty, especially if you want to have any hope of trying other things around the mercado and you don't want to walk away with permanent hypertension from the sodium load. The mortadella is thinly sliced and has a squeaky chew to it which contrasts nicely with the crusty outside of the roll that has a pillowy inner texture. The gratuitous cheese melted in it is actually lost amidst the overly salty meat. There were 2 types of hot chili sauces on the table, 1 red and 1 yellow. The yellow is not mustard despite it looking like creamy dijon and had more heat and better flavor IMO. Unfortunately, both added yet more salt along with the heat so if you like spicing your sandwich up, you will essentially obtain your sodium allowance for the entire year in a single sitting when combined with the mortadella. Overall, I'm really happy I got to come here to give this a try. It was good. It wasn't great and wasn't much more than a wad of salted meat on a good Portuguese roll. Despite it being a salt bomb, I ate the entire thing. Haha, the term "wad of salted meat" sort of describes me after finishing it. I would eat it again if in the area but probably would not make an aggressive pilgrimage to get another one in my belly.

Service is fast and friendly. Situated in the middle of the market it's easy to find. We got the famous mortadella sandwich. It's delicious, but very rich. The best part is how thin the mortadella is sliced and how many slices adorn the sandwich. So great biting through all the layers. The mortadella is also grilled for a few moments releasing all the oils which soak down into the bread. We went without cheese (sacrilegious as devout cheese lovers) and chose lettuce and tomato as we thought it would counter the richness a bit. Glad we did in the end. Eating in the market and people watching is half the fun. At first they seemed busy but the staff will always find a spot for you.

We are fans of Anthony Bourdain and he recommended this sandwich: mortadella. Quite salty IMO but it can go well with cold beers! Also tried the mortadella balls and again was salty. My fresh passion fruit juice went well. Ordering was easy as they have an English menu. Accept CC. Sat in bar stools and waiter brought our food in less than 5 mins.

Ignore all the other stalls since Bar do Mané is the original purveyor of the famous mortadella sandwich! As featured on Anthony Bourdain, the luncheon meat comes topped with layers of melted cheese and slung into an unadorned roll, requiring little accompaniment. It truly is salty and cheesy goodness to the max. Either come famished or with a friend to finish off this beast.

A friend of mine highly recommended Bar Do Mane. She advised trying the Mortadela Sandwich. Now I recommended it to YOU. There are several similar venues in the Municipal Market in São Paulo. Not sure how it compares BUT I can tell you this was a great sandwich at a very reasonable price. I got the basic one with cheese for about 6 USD. Can "super size" it for about another dollar. I couldn't finish mine and I am not a bashful eater! A word of advice, be very careful of the fruit vendors in the market. Many are very shady. Beware!!

Luckily I was wearing sandals, because this is "knock your socks off" mortadella! Perfect for splitting, or just sitting for an hour, reading, drinking choppi (Brazilian beer) and people watching. If you go to Sao Paulo, go to Mercado Municipal. If you go to Mercado Municipal, go to Bar do Mané If you go to Bar do Mané, get a mortadella sandwich. And if you give a mouse a cookie...

This spot is on Anthony Bourdain's must try if your in Sao Paulo, and I was doubtful that how a simple sandwich can be so delicious?! Its located in Sao Paulo's Mercado de Municipal, and with bar tables and stools, theres room to enjoy it there. The meat is a mix between ham, bologna, i ordered it hot, with cheese. And yes, now I get it, its the unique taste of the meat, where thinly sliced meat can turn into a flavorful, satisfying bite. They also have this yellow sauce that is a must for those who love spicy foods. Added great flavor and depth to the sandwich. The portions are huge so be hungry!

It took us a minute to find this spot as the market is so big. Once we finally found it, I was really excited as I'm a big fan of Bourdain & this was his first stop in the city. We got the mortadella of course and was it big. If I had known I would have ordered that one to share. The cheese was all melted and the sandwich was nice & hot. I took my first bite and the cheese just got everywhere, but I didn't mind. It was pretty salty though as the other poster mentioned, but it made the Brahma and great pairing. Damn did the 2 go great together. I couldn't imagine eating it without a very cold beer due to the salt though.
Yelp Review 2025 #162: Despite Anthony Bourdain not being around anymore, having watched his shows that I still rewatch til this day, I make it a mission to try places he's been. He has not steered me wrong so far. As soon as I landed in São Paulo, I hopped on a taxi to have my first meal in Bar do Mane with bags in tow. I got here at 11am and they still had plenty of empty tables - they do take up a lot of space in Mercado Municipal de São Paulo which means more tables and chairs for their diners. Scan the QR code that's on the table to see the menu. I already knew what I wanted to get so, I waived one of the servers over to place my order. There's only one thing you SHOULD get from here anyway: their famous mortadella sandwich...ok, maybe, try their bacalhau too. Under 10 minutes later, I got my food. Mortadella Sandwich: They come in 2 sizes: regular and large. Trust me, the regular sandwich will fill you up. If you're sharing with another person, get the large. Layers upon layers of thinly sliced mortadella with melted gooey cheese on top that you can literally see melting towards the layers of salty mortadella - all on a soft bun. The sandwich comes pre-sliced which makes it easier to share or take the other half home/ to your hotel. They're generous with the mortadella. The sandwich is about 48 Brazilian Reais which is under $10. The cheese is incredible. It's a squeaky kind of cheese even though the color looks like it's cheddar cheese. I asked for a box for my leftover. They boxed it up for me and put it in a bag. I ate the other half the next day - cold. It would've been better warmed up for sure. Most hotels don't really have a microwave unless you're staying at an Airbnb or an apartel. The service was ok. All you have to do is wave somebody over if you need anything. Sitting there waiting for things to fall on your lap will leave you sitting there for over an hour. read more

Came here for the super hyped mortadella, an Italian cold cut that is best described as luxurious bologna. To me, it was a little too salty and too meaty. But that just might be how the sandwich is. I got the small (there's a large option too) but it took me two meals to finish it. I also got a strawberry juice, which was fresh and countered the salty taste of the meat. This restaurant is located in the Mercado Municipal - a large, historic market in Sao Paulo for its cold cuts, fruits, and other stalls. Staff is sweet and prompt and service moves quickly. read more
Bar do Mane in the bustling Mercado Municipal of São Paulo offers a menu of iconic sandwiches and pastries. The São Paulo Bauru sandwich was made of ham, melted cheese, and tomatoes in a simple roll, and the ham and cheese were lightly grilled and caramelized. The sandwich was nothing complicated--the meat and cheese had a salty flavor and the roll got a bit soggy, but the combination was tasty nonetheless. I also tried the Pastel de Bacalhau, a fried pastry with a filling of shredded cod mixed with green olives. The cod was unsurprisingly on the salty side but went nicely with the two different hot sauces brought to our table. Overall, this was a great eatery for experiencing the bustle of the market and some classic culinary traditions of São Paulo! read more

I was very excited to check out Bar do Mane. One, it was recommended in my Brazil guidebook. Two, multiple people recommended that we check it out and try the mortadella sandwich. Three, Anthony Bourdain had visited and he similarly recommended the mortadella sandwich. That's more than enough for me. Bar do Mane is a Sao Paulo institution and has been around forever. Located inside the Mercado Municipal, we stopped by for lunch. After sitting at a high-top table, I started off with a fresh juice. They were out of my first two choices but the third time was the charm. They also had free WiFi which is always a plus in my book. From there, naturally, I went with the mortadella sandwich. They have both a regular and large option and the price difference between the two was small so I went with the large. Mortadella is an Italian bologna. Bar do Mane takes some fresh bread, adds some cheese, and then stacks the mortadella sky-high. This is a monster of a sandwich! I wasn't able to finish it and I was stuffed. And I didn't even get a side. The sandwich is going to get your hands dirty as the meat juices ooze out of the sandwich but it was beyond delicious. I now know why it's a famous dish and one that has been recommended by many. It's a must-visit! read more

Tried my first pastis at Bar do Mané in São Paulo, and it was delicious. The area isn't the safest, so be cautious, but it's also a popular tourist attraction. Definitely worth a visit for the unique experience and great food! read more

These guys make an AMAZING mortadella sandwich. Enjoy the hustle and bustle of the market, grab a cold beer, and see if you can't get this whole puppy down in one seating (it's not a small sandwich)... Great times... read more

Basically the only reason you will eat here is the famous mortadella sandwich. Be careful where you go in the market for this delicacy - Bar do Mane is the *original* purveyor of it. There are TONS of places trying to replicate it and sell you the same thing... Just a note - this sandwich is huge. If you aren't famished or just want to try it, share it with a friend. It was more than enough for two of us when we had it. It's famous and a heavy meal but worth giving a shot! read more
Longest line for food at the Municipal Mercado. They are famous for their HUGE mordetella sandwiches, which is what we ordered. I'm a fan on meats...but the stack of mordetella was too huge...made it overly salty. I think I tasted more salt than anything... However, we ordered the Especial and that sandwich was bomb! It was some sort of sausage with onions and some other stuff which I paid no attention too since it was delish! I know they're known for their original mordetella, but I would say get the especial. read more
