Caffe Lago - View of the ferry passing by from our table on the water

Walked down to the water front where you have a variety of options. Caffe Lago is located past the ferry landing. A large, covered outdoor seating area is located directly on the water, with an inside located just across the walkway. You can get gelato 'to go' at the entrance, or have a seat, peruse the menu and get a gelato dessert delivered to your table. Our visit, although late in the afternoon, was for a light lunch. The menu includes a number of sandwiches. I went for the 'toast' of smoked salmon while my SO got a tuna sandwich; plus a beer and a glass of wine. It was a warm sunny day on our visit, and the breeze off the lake was wonderful. The ferry going by sometimes sent a whiff of diesel your way, but that was brief and infrequent. There are signs in the restaurant asking that you NOT feed the birds. They are cute little things, but boy are they aggressive! Not at all shy, a couple of birds came to rest on the ledge next to our lake side table to check out the situation as we sat. Next thing we know, they are hopping up onto the table looking for a treat. Being fans of German beer, the Augustiner was a very welcome surprise and being served in an official Augustiner mug really made my SO's day! Unfortunately, my glass of red wine was not a well received. It tasted like the wine bottle had been opened at least a day prior (most likely a bit longer) and was not at all enjoyable. Once the sandwiches arrived, the birds were up on the table hopping right up to the side of the plate. We had to keep our eyes on these little cuties. The smoked salmon toast is a huge sandwich (to me). The salmon was good quality, with soft cheese contrasting the dry toast, the cucumber refreshing, the tomato cool and juicy. A bit of the cheese spilled out of my sandwich onto the plate and as I used both hands to bring the sandwich to my mouth, a bird swooped under my arms, scooped up the cheese, and landed on the ledge to savor his victory! These birds are not kidding. The tuna is plain flaked tuna spread over a bed of 'gentle' lettuce on a nice soft sandwich roll, topped with tomato and finished with a bit of mayo. We both enjoyed our selections and were quite full when done. Customer service here is good. Location, right on the lake is also good. The food options are limited, and you may have to keep an eye on the feathered friends trying to join you for lunch, but all in all, I would recommend this 'fuori' location for the service and location.

Roughly 10" diameter pizzas for 6.50 or 7 euros? No, not at a food truck, but at a real sit down…read morerestaurant., on a busy main street, right across from the Grand Hotel Dino where we were staying in Baveno, Italy.. Open 12pm-2pm, and 7pm-10pm everyday, with 173 reviews in Tripadvisor. It's 88 degrees, and all the tables outside are taken, so we have to go inside, where it's like an oven, with near blank walls like in a hospital. They save money by reducing the ambiance and decor. Service is very slow. Wife's 7 euro vegetarian pizza comes with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, sliced mushrooms and cucumbers, while my 6.50 euro comes with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and sliced pieces of sausages of Frankfurt. The thin crust is absolutely delicious and tasty. Next table had spaghetti, which was almost twice as expensive, with a very small portion. The pizzas here are the cheapest in town, with most places charging at least 10 euros and up for pizza. Bill included table tax of 1.5 euros per person, plus 3.30 euros for the sprite, plus 2.50 euros for tap water which is included, even if you order a soft drink, along with the 13.5 euros for the two pizzas. One pizza could have fed both of us, but we found out the hard way what happens when you try to share a pizza in Europe. Each person must order at least one entree. 5.50 euro charge minimum for two before you even order an entrée. That's Italy. It is what it is! Both of us finished our pizzas, as the hotels in Europe don't have microwave ovens. And no pizza take out orders. Each couple has to pay the 5.50 euro ($6.50) charge for every table, to go with our 13.50 euro charge for two pizzas. Oh, by the way, those people who got a table outside had to endure second hand smoke from smokers at the other outside tables. You are no longer in California! .
