Did to-go, but pretty darn good gem here in town that's worth your bucks if you're looking to get the most out of your dollar! The BBQ itself was good. Not the best the town has to offer, but I had zero complaints about the BBQ or the quality of the sides itself. The real seller is the quantity of food for the price. I have a large appetite and I considered the SMALL pork dinner a lot of food. I couldn't even imagine the large! And for only $9 in 2025, I can't imagine a lot of take-out options where you can get as much good food. Personally, I'd go again whenever I'm on another cheat day (more likely the $5.50 pork sandwich), but I really like this place for Sumter. read more

It's the only BBQ place I've found in Sumter that is actually open but only 3 days a week. The food is good but not as good as several places I've been to in Charleston. Disappointed. 1st time but went based upon other reviews. Four adults; one order of rib, one of pork and two chicken. The hash was like sloppy joe, the pork plate and rib plates were room temperature if. When owner came to how we enjoyed our meal I voice our disappointment and he just walked away. read more

Don't have pleasure in leaving a bad review, the folks running the place seem nice. But can't ignore that both the ribs and chicken I ordered came room temp, tasted like they were both baked in an oven (99% sure they were). Chicken skin rubbery, some mediocre sauce slopped over both meats, nothing "smoked" at all in flavor or texture. Side dishes mediocre at best, very limited selection. I really wanted to enjoy this lunch, but this meal was just really Bad. I've eaten and appreciated bbq all over the USA, and this is easily the worst I've ever had. Total disappointment. Alright, so this maybe one I need to start with a quick disclaimer. I'm a Mississippi boy, and was raised on Texas style BBQ. So the slight sweeter tomato based BBQ sauce. Now that you know that, let's continue. So The BBQ Hut is only open from Thursday to Sunday. Not positive of the hours, but I do know that mid day they serve a buffet with some pretty decent options at better than a decent price! Ribs (get there early to catch these!), Fried and BBQ chicken, pulled pork, their chili like hash, peas and corn, cole slaw, and even a couple of deserts. The food we had was pretty good, especially the fried chicken. Sadly, they were already out of ribs so we ordered a small side of them to taste. The fried chicken, we thought, was perfection. Great crispy skin, moist well cooked chicken, and lots of flavor. The BBQ ribs and chicken were also good, thankfully vinegar style sauce cooks out most the strong vinegar taste. The ribs were a tiny bit on the tough side, but still a good flavor. The chicken, in my opinion was lacking most the BBQ flavor I expected, but again, still well flavored and good. Pulled pork was good, tender, and moist. Not really loaded with flavor (need to add your own sauce), but since I don't like vinegar based sauce I had to eat it straight up. The sides were hit or miss, rice was cooked (hard to mess this one up) but no mush or hard pieces. The corn was cooked with... onions?... so good but the first taste was just off a bit. I managed to was this down with their very decent, tasty, sweet tea. And as always, finished up with the banana pudding desert. Which was good, but light in nila wafers (which I love) and the pudding didn't quite taste home made. :-/ I'd return, though mostly for the fried chicken since I'm being honest. I'd recommend it to someone looking for a tasty little, and inexpensive, buffet in the area. So definitely give it a try. read more

My wife and I tried to get in here several times because we were interested in trying every BBQ joint in the area. Once we finally got in it was very anti-climatic. The food wasn't bad, per se, but you can get better flavor for less money at one of the local Ward's locations. And my wife had to end up paying because they didn't take debit or credit... The map incorrectly displays the location of the Bar-B-Que Hut. It's actually positioned to your right if you take 15 when it forks right from 521. Went in on a Saturday (no buffet) to try their hash. It was the first time I had ever had a red hash. It was kind of a cross between BBQ sauce and Chef Boy R Dee spaghetti sauce. I asked for a small to go and was handed a huge box filled with rice and hash, way more than I could finish, along with a couple of hush puppies. The owners were right there serving up the food. An extremely friendly couple that noticed I was a BBQ judge and asked me to try their pulled pork. It was very tasty and the sauce was tart with a nice balance. The sauce on the ribs was very unique, not too sweet and not overly vinegar-y. I really liked it! The pulled pork had great flavor on it's on before adding sauce, which I love. Wonderful authentic Southern BBQ. Went in on A Friday night before the football game with 6 folks and was seated promptly. Owners and staff behind the counter were as friendly as could be. Went to visit my niece in Sumter. I had read the good reviews so told her we had to try it. They are real! This place is a hidden gem. Tastes so good. We got the ribs, pulled pork combo. They come with the potato salad, hash, and hush puppies. All of it was super tasty. I might live in Las Vegas, but I lived in Georgia for years so I know good bar b q. Try it, you'll like it. Pretty good BBQ better than any Ward's. Ward's is a local institution but offers truly tasteless sour meat. If you want to eat the buffet get there early. The closer to closing time the less they put out. Sides are okay. Cole Slaw and potato salad are doctored up canned and so is the banana pudding. Nothing like what grandma makes. Staff are friendly and eager to please. Good sweet tea. Best hash in Sumter has a good flavor over parboiled rice. Sumter needs a McCabe's. Just ate lunch here. Fairly limited offering on the buffet. But what was there was good. Rice and hash were tasty, green beans and snap peas were acceptable. The fried chicken, and the barbecue as well, were both exceptional. Those were the two items that made this place above average. Hello. I'm a FTCC student and i was on a 15 minute break coming to get some fries with extra seasoning. First they told me i had to spend $5 to use my debit card. So i ordered a large sprite to go with my meal. My fries are EXTRA DRY, with no seasoning!!! And i was charged $4.81, not even $5 for my food. I'm a college student with 2 kids trying to make my last $5 last and it was wasted on these dry fries with no seasoning!!! I want my money back!!!!!!!!!! she was so busy up selling the food that she couldn't get the simple order right. I also had two other orders for 2 others students and they ordered extra crispy fries and the snack pack 2 piece chicken, they was charged over $7 for 2 pieces of chicken AND SOME DRY FRIES WITH. NO SEASONING!!!!! And not even extra crispy!!!!!!!! Barbecue hut is so small yet so simple minded that they can't get a order of fries and 2 snack packs right!!! read more

I have been trying to find a good BBQ place in Sumter since I moved here 2+ years ago! Happened upon this place by accident on our way to Charleston last Friday around lunch time...arrived during the lunch buffet time (11a - 2p)! Went in and was greeted by very friendly cashiers...paid the $10.50 per person with a card which includes a drink (tea or lemonade). Was given a plate and small bowl and off to the buffet I went! Rice and hash, beans (2 types), fried chicken, BBQ chicken, pulled pork, ribs, coleslaw, potato salad and banana pudding. Filled my plate with everything but ribs and potato salad -- loved every speck. It was so yummy and delicious. So happy I found this place! will definitely be back! Wonderful southern hospitality with BBQ worth every penny. Was given another clean plate, but put so much on my first one that I was too stuffed for seconds Wish the banana pudding was made with vanilla pudding instead...along with the real bananas, it was just too banana-y for me. read more
