WOW! If you want to feel warm and welcomed then you must go visit Emma, at Bar 500. Her restaurant is in the heart of downtown Cortona and offers inside and outside seating. Her restaurant is quaint, charming, and cozy. Emma will treat you like one of her family. My wife and I found her one night while she was closing and asked if we could get dessert and coffee to go. She could have said "no" very easily but instead welcomed us and prepared two hot coffees with cookies and a tart to go. We liked her so much, we made reservations for dinner the next night before we walked out. OBTW, the coffee and desserts were fresh and tasty. Our dinner and service the next evening was great. Emma and her associate do everything. They seat you, hand out the menu, take your order, cook and serve you the food, and then bus the tables. All along the way, you get to talk with Emma. My wife and I had salads to begin our meal and then pasta dishes with ragu. Our meals were cooked fresh, served hot, and the portions were generous. If you looked around, all of her customers were laughing, smiling, and enjoying themselves. The prices were very reasonable considering her location. Emma has quite a selection of tasty and fresh desserts, especially the cookies with the chocolate strip. There are plenty of options in Cortona but if you want to feel like you are entering into someone's home, go visit Emma. You will not be disappointed. The food was fresh, and prepared with attention to detail ...you can taste the love. We stopped by one of the first days we were there and had a delicious meal with awesome personal service . But that's not what Im writing about. Tourists, a newsflash: grocery stores close early on certain days. We did not know. So we the next day when we needed a few staples and found the stores closed we went back to Bar 500 to marinate in our sadness. After hearing of our grocery issues, the lovely owner sprang into action! A lemon? Yes! A bottle of olive oil? No problem! She simply added that to our bill as we enjoyed a bottle of wine. Who does that? How is that not the best, kindest customer service ever?!! The owner's name is Emma. She is a good human and a hard working small business owner. The food is excellent and well priced. I am from the states and have been battling a rare stage 4 cancer for nearly four years. I was really worried about food coming to Italy because I'm usually vegan and gluten free, and also I can't eat a lot at once but need calories, so I love to be able to take my leftovers (I'm still on chemo and get a lot of nausea). I was worried because I read in italy taking food is not customary. Gluten in Europe has not been an issue for me, and tonight I decided to try some mozzarella for the first time in 14 years! Bar 500 did not disappoint. I also got an aperol spritz which was amazing! The owner was so sweet and packed some of my food to go for me (trust me, if your tummy can fit it, you will clean your plate), which was so kind. We were in Cortona for 4 days and decided to stop at Bar 500 which is located on the main street in Cortona. I had the Bruschetta and my husband the lasagna along with some alcoholic beverages. The food was amazing, drinks were great, atmosphere was everything you dream of when visiting Tuscany and the staff were really friendly. We loved this place so much that we decided to visit it two more times. My husband raved about the lasagna which he had every time we visited this place and I decided to try it our last time there and it did not disappoint. Everything we had there was great. We dined this evening at Bar 500 and we were not sure what to expect. This was day 2 of Dr Bonnie's latest lockdown and only outside dining was allowed. We lucked out a Bar 500 and our server Mark. I had the halibut with fresh pea shoots, capers, sliced pickled red onion and chickpea fries...you heard me right, chickpea fries! My wife has the brisket sandwich with roasted cauliflower soup. In the center of Cortona Italy this resteraunt stands. It was awesome. We ate here 3 times. The Vegetarian pizza was outstanding!! I actually ate the whole thing, personal sized of course. The owners(Emma and Rob) are very friendly as is their small staff. The service was great and always had customers laughing and smiling.At the end of our dinner, it was common for Emma to bring us a complimentary "Lemoncello", and that, would rap up the night. Bar 500 became a bar away from home bar especially or husband, Tom Murphy. Whenever went into Cortona for the day or night my husband would stop in and have a drink. The couple who currently own this place were so welcoming and generous with their service and time.
