Nestled in a small cul de sac in Balmoral (Mt Eden), this hidden gem has authentic Japanese cuisine at very reasonable prices. The food is great. The staff are very friendly, enthusiastic and quick to serve their customers. When we dined in, our orders were taken and the food was on our table in about ten minutes. Love that! I used to frequent this restaurant when I lived in the area and never had an unpleasant experience. One time we went in about five minutes before closing and they were still happy for us to dine in, and we didn't feel rushed at all to finish our meals. In saying that the opening hours are rather short which is a shame. The restaurant itself is very small and it can get quite warm in there with the kitchen being so close, but there are a few tables outside. Perhaps this place is best suited for a take-away option though.

    Fire Roll. Spicy tuna.

We shared some starters of fried squid and takoyaki and these were delivered to our table quickly.

Location is prime for students, corporate heads and maybe some daytime boozers. My girlfriend and I stumbled upon this place on our way to inspect an apartment in CBD (I wouldn't recommend it) when we walked pass Nuri Maru and saw the $4 box deals. Whaaaat!? 4 bucks!?! We had about 10-minutes before inspection but I didn't want to miss out on that chicken karaage box or the spam masubi or the assorted salmon sushi. Soooo we detoured right inside. Pretty fun atmosphere you'd come to find at a typical Korean-style sushi restaurant - there was even a giant flat screen TV with K-Pop (Korean Pop) music videos on haha. We paid for our boxes and took a seat when a lovely lady from behind the counter asked if we wanted Miso Soup. I declined at first thinking she was trying to upsell me even after we had already paid. But then I noticed the beautiful sign that read "Free Miso for every $5 purchase" or something like that.. I saw "FREE" "Miso" and "$5" so I that's all I cared about. I quickly retracted my declination and said with conviction "YES!" She asked if we wanted two (one for my gf I guess haha).. Again, I said "YES!" as I nodded my head like an Asian school boy. Everything was surprisingly good for something that's been sitting out for who knows how long. The salmon roll was especially delicious - it had that milky, soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture.. mMMMmMmmM We're definitely coming back again.. maybe tomorrow since we have another inspection in the area hahah

I have been frequenting this place sporadically over the last 10 years. It has undergone a recent refurbishment inside - taking away the high table/stool area by the front of the restaurant - it now looks like a Japanese restaurant. This small, quaint restaurant is run by authentic Japanese people who are friendly and welcoming. The menu is typically Japanese fare with freshly made (on-site) sushi, bento box/s, sashimi, miso soup etc etc. Parking is abundant, well priced & most importantly it's always a great customer experience! You must go & make this your fav too! Yelp!

We'd decided to get takeout sushi, a bottle of champs, and have a picnic on our living room floor (highly recommend). Yokoso played an integral part in our night, as we got the takeaway sushi here. After finding it on Google maps as one of the highest rated sushi restaurants in our area, we headed down to check it out for ourselves. The restaurant is tiny but cute, it would be a good place for a casual date or a catch up with a friend. Most tables accommodate two, so don't try bringing a big group. We took a look at the menu, and I ordered an avocado roll. The funny thing about this place is that you don't order by the roll, you order the number of pieces you want. This was new to me, so I ordered 9 pieces. What a fun game :) The woman working there asked if I wanted the veggie roll, which is avocado, cucumber and capsicum (aka bell pepper), but I told her I just wanted avocado. My boyfriend ordered a couple of styles of sushi, for a total of 15 pieces. We took our lil sushes home, wrapped carefully in little to-go containers with a side of pink ginger. After popping the bubbly and laying out our little picnic blanket, we plated the sushi and went to town. I was surprised to find my roll with bell pepper in it, as I'd asked specifically just for avo, but I figured I shouldn't be mad about getting some extra vitamins in. My boyfriend ate his quicker than I could finish mine, which I think means he liked it ;) The sushi was good, not the best I've ever had, but it was good. Even though I do love bell pepper every once in a while, I don't think I ever got over the fact that they added it in after I specifically asked for none, as they weren't even busy when we were there (we were literally the only people there). Nonetheless, I'd happily go back, as the prices are good and the sushi was good too.

The bento boxes are equally as good- and there's a constant battle of what to order. In the chicken one you get rice, teriyaki chicken, tempura veges, salad and chicken sushi. Amazing, and all for 13.50. You get a buzzer and you can go get a drink from the Asian Supermarket whilst you wait. The one thing about Mercs, is that it really doesn't look like much. Everything is made fresh to order, and for the price it is extremely good value. I often place my order and then go and do some grocery shopping in the centre's Asian supermarket while I wait. If you order a cooked meal (like their bento dinner boxes, $13.50 - very good) at a peak time you might have to wait a while. We last ate in on a Sunday night around 7pm and we had to wait almost half an hour. But once the food arrived it was all worth it - perfectly cooked teriyaki salmon, crunchy tempura veges and super fresh salmon rolls. For lunch, pick up a 9-piece rolled salmon sushi set for only $9 - you can't get much better value than that in Auckland city.
