I found Banff Trail Riders through Viator while planning my itinerary to Banff. The Wagon Ride with BBQ cookout was one of the few activities that stood out and appealed to me. They offer multiple timeslots for this tour and I took the last departure time (5pm) for dinner. Without hesitation, I booked and overall I found it enjoyable.
Meetup is at the Warner Stables (The big red barn. You can't miss it.) and from there you hop onto the Wagon. Personally, I suggest sitting in the back of the wagon. I mean, I guess you could sit in the front however you're directly behind the horse's asses and who knows when they plan on dropping deuce. Plus, you get better views behind you as the wagon moves.
I was thankful to have done this on a calm and sunny day. The trail they go through is picturesque. The ride is at least a half hour long each way and the trail they go through is shared with the horseback riding group (depending on tour chosen, the horseback group also does the cookout with the wagon riders) where we all convene in their tented outdoor dining area.
The ride itself was very calm and relaxing. The views are great and I know I'm dating myself when I say this but the wagon ride felt very "Oregon Trail" for me in a good way. I at least survived and did not die from dysentery!
They have fun activities while waiting for your meal. I didn't do horseshoes however I did a lasso attempt. It takes a while to figure out swing and aim but it was lively nonetheless.
Kate/Catherine and Loki were our tour guides for the day and both were awesome. They did a great job keeping the crowd engaged and entertained while providing history of the trail landscape. They were excellent with the Percheron horses (Arnie and Atlas) and all got us safely to and fro.
Dinner was delicious and I was stuffed by the end of it. The Albertan AAA steak was cooked just to my liking (they do ask how you want it cooked prior to departure) and the sides complemented the meal. I also liked the homemade compound butter and added that not only to my steak but to some of the sides as well!
I would definitely do this while in Banff if your aims are to do something fun, relaxing and not demanding on foot.
If driving in, they have a big parking lot. You shouldn't have issues finding space. read more
