We had a terrible experience with Discover Banff Tours and would never book through them again. We booked a dog sledding excursion for 6 people, including our family and our friends visiting from San Diego. We paid nearly $1,400 in full for 2 sleds, submitted all required guest information right away (weights, ages, etc.), and even received an email confirming that everything had been received and that we were fully confirmed for Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. Then on Monday afternoon, less than 24 hours before the excursion, they called asking for the same information all over again. We told them we had already submitted it and had the confirmation email to prove it. After putting us on hold, they came back and admitted there had been a miscommunication on their end and that the person who handled our booking failed to enter our information properly. Because of their mistake, our reservation was given away to someone else. So after taking our money, confirming our booking, and making us think everything was locked in, they left us with no dog sledding tour and no real solution on the only day that worked for our group. They did offer us Friday, but that did absolutely nothing for us because we leave Thursday and our friends fly home Wednesday. That is exactly why we booked this in advance the previous Friday. The kids were already excited for this experience, and we were left scrambling at the last minute trying to find another company because of their mistake. The only thing they could really offer was a refund or to push other excursions we had no interest in. That's not customer service -- that's damage control after they failed to do their job correctly. This was extremely unprofessional, careless, and a huge inconvenience during a family trip. guri was a delightful knowledgeable consummate professional and fun guide for our tour of banffs top attractions which did not disappoint BUT #getyourguide who we have happily used in other cities has to make a change in banff! they lost all the pick up times no matter the location at 8am when. if you read tiny embedded print it will seperate out by location! needless to say we arrived at our location at 8am and didn't get picked up til 950! just a thing they should fix since everything else is so good. read more

Great night hike of Johnston Canyon! My friend and I booked a tour online beforehand and we got picked up from a different hotel (only certain downtown hotels allow for pickup). Since it was in February, we dressed very warmly. Handwarmers and foot warmers would be advised. They provide headlamps which you can keep as a souvenir as well as snow shoes. Our group had about 12 people in it and we all fit comfortably in their van. The night hike was short and not too strenuous. We saw a waterfall and stopped at various points to gaze at the stars. One good tip for those with iPhones is to change the night mode setting from 3 seconds to 10 seconds in order to allow the photos to develop better. We had hot cocoa while on the trail and were given a packet of maple cookies. Overall, the night hike was a nice way to explore safely at night and view the beauty of nature. read more

We booked a tour to see the Columbia Icefields and we chose this tour mainly because of the group size, it was smaller than the typical tour size. We personally preferred being with a smaller group. After you book the tour, you get the choose what kind of sandwich you want for lunch. Food wasn't bad, they actually provide you more than just a sandwich. They included fruits, cookies, and a drink. We stayed at Lake Louise and had to drive down to the mall to get picked up since they weren't allowed to go directly to the hotel. Our tour guide was Anick and she was awesome! She stopped at so many places on the way to the Icefields and back. She also shared a lot of great history along the way which was nice. Her driving was good as well! For someone who gets car sick easily, I didn't feel anything. At the end of the tour, she also gave us maple cookies which was nice. We did the Evening Wildlife Safari with Tyler. We were picked up in front of the Banff Park Lodge where we were staying. They have specific locations for pick up/drop off. Tyler is very animated and unloaded a wealth of knowledge regarding the various animals we spotted on our tour. Before we even hit the tour spots we came across numerous elk on the golf course. Spotted some deer & with all the luck we were having, we had high hopes of spotting a bear. We had given up all hope and went to our last spot, the Mt. Norquay view point to snap some photos when a gentleman not on our tour group alerted us that there was a black bear close by and to be bear aware. Our list was complete and it was a wonderful close to an eventful tour! The sprinter van we rode in was very clean and held a max of 18 passengers. Our particular tour was sold out. I highly recommend booking your activities way in advance, even before you head out to Banff to ensure your participation. Especially in the summer and even in the shoulder month of September. While you aren't guaranteed to spot any wildlife,(we were fortunate) you will learn a heap about the wildlife. In case you don't know, DON'T FEED THE WILDLIFE, it's a $25,000 fine (for us American folks it comes to about $18,521 + in USD). It's a hefty fine, but the worst part is the wildlife that are fed by humans risk being euthanized. So don't let ignorance or stupidity ruin these creatures lives or the chance for others to enjoy their beauty. ***BE SURE TO CALL THE COMPANY 24 hours prior to your tour, to confirm the tour is not cancelled.**** read more

Book johnson canyon hike with Discovery tour group. Small group big adventure promises and delightfully delivered! Hotel pick up & drop off. Group of 10 for us. Pace reasonable for this overweight middle aged weekend warrior- I was able to keep up. That goodness for photo opportunities and lovely historical spots for a narrative from Rob. Icicles and frozen waterfalls greeted us on the right side of the hike. We were on the look out for wolves, elk, bears- but we only saw footprints of the said wildlife in the ravines and snow streams. Velcro shoe straps for traction provided- go to washrooms first before putting them on at the van. Pole also provided. Rob carried maple cream cookies individually manufactured wrapped from Quebec cookies and hot cocoa. Nice treats. 8:30 am tour booked. Picked us up at 8:11 am. Hiked 5 ish miles. Back to hotel at 12:15 pm. I stayed in Banff lodge. No issues with our group and we all got along. Age varied from early twenties, I am forties, some fifties; several 60's. The older folks seemed fitter than us younger folks! I need to step my weekday fitness level up- Lolol. Best time ever!!! I think I'll book a wolf sanctuary tour on Monday. Definitely use discovery tours especially if you don't want to drive in the snow, rain, or sleet; carry equipment on your carry on; or need a guide at your side! Loved it. read more

We booked a Johnston Canyon Icewalk for many people (my parents, ourselves, my daughter, and others from our ski club) well in advance of our tour date (the week before our trip to Banff from Florida). The day before our tour, my daughter suffered a serious ski accident and was hospitalized for a torn ACL, sprained MCL, maxillofacial fractures, and concussion. She was hospitalized and placed in a brace and confined to a wheelchair. My wife and I managed her care and logistics through the Ski Patrol sled, snowmobile evac, ambulance ride, hospital admission in Banff (fabulous team), and had to figure out many logistics to take her to another town's hospital for a CT Scan the next day (on the day we were supposed to do our icewalk tour). We don't know the area, we're 2,800+ miles from home, dealing with a different medical system, trying to manage my daughter's stress and pain while tracking down ski equipment to return, I had to rent a van to haul my daughter between hospitals and stow the wheelchair and crutches, etc. - just a bunch of chaos. After all of this along with a hellish night of moving my daughter's hotel room into ours, a major lack of sleep, and intense pain management, I thought "Surely, Discover Banff Tours will understand the situation and help". I called the next morning and updated Discover Banff Tours of the situation and that my parents were still going with the group of other members from our ski club. I proposed a VERY simple solution of sending them all of the supporting hospital and diagnostic information (this was sent to them) and if they would allow my wife and I to manage the logistics of my daughter's CT Scan and follow up hospital care that day, we could fill the vacant spots on the next day since my parents could take care of her since they were going with our original group as planned. There were openings at 1:30PM the next day, and it would have been VERY EASY to offer us that spot and help us in a very tumultuous time. They told me they could (and did) refund my daughter, but to email them the details and they would "have to ask management" since Discover Banff Tours felt that my daughter didn't need my and my wife's help (with one leg, immense pain, severely restricted mobility, no knowledge of the area, etc.) Here's the email response I received that afternoon: "...Regarding the trip for Abigale and yourself, I note from the doctor's notes that Madison was seen on 25th February at approximately 3:20 pm. Please understand that, as we did not receive any advance notice before 8:00 am this morning regarding your inability to join the trip, we had already made arrangements for all three of you to attend. Had we been informed earlier, we might have had the opportunity to resell those spots. Due to the lack of prior notice, we are unable to issue a refund for today's trip. However, we are pleased to offer you and Abigale a 25% discount should you wish to rebook for tomorrow's trip. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns." So with everything going on, Discover Banff Tours suggests I should have stopped all logistical responsibilities on the mountain and in the hospital, and tells me I should have called them. Next time I know that if someone gets seriously injured skiing, to use that time on the mountain (somewhere in between the actual moment of the injury, dialing for EMS services, and awaiting first responders) to make sure I CALL THE TOUR COMPANY from the mountain to address the next day's tour and propose a solution so they can SELL THOSE SPOTS! So please understand that IF THIS HAPPENS TO YOU, make sure to prioritize your tour over proper care and concern for your injured loved one. Discover Banff has the most affordable prices & offers the best variety of tours in Banff. I used them for three of my December excursions. Their shuttles will pick you up at just about any hotel in town. Here is a brief synopsis of the 3 tours I went on. 1) Discover Banff & Its Wildlife Winter tour: I did this tour on the morning of 12/12/2019. It normally costs $70 but their online site had something called an ONLINE2SAVE coupon that marked the price down. I ended up paying $58.80 in Canadian dollars (about $44.70 US dollars) for. The tour lasts about 3 hours. The tour group was small & we were picked up in a blue shuttle van. We were driven to several locations where we got out, observed the scenery & took pictures. The parts of this tour I enjoyed the most were going to Lake Minnewanka & the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. Many of the lakes around Banff are frozen but since Minnewanka is so deep, it was only frozen around its edges. Minnewanka means "Water of the Spirits" and local folklore has it that a merman (a creature who's half man/half fish) once lived there. The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel isn't just any hotel. It first opened in the 1800s & resembles a castle. It's currently the most expensive hotel in Banff. There's a small replica of it sitting on a table in the lobby that's made of gingerbread. They had a live stage play version of "A Christmas Carol" performing their auditorium showing later that evening. This place is popular for weddings & has its share of ghost stories too. Though this tour mentions wildlife, since it was December we didn't see many animals other than deer. But we were shown a phone booth near the Bow Falls area of Banff National Park that had been destroyed by a black bear. 2) Johnston Canyon Icewalk : I did this tour later in the afternoon on the same day I did the Discover Banff tour I just mentioned. After I used the ONLINE2SAVE coupon it cost $74.66 Canadian (about $56.40 USD). We were given ice cleats to wear on our shoes for the walk. The tour guide was a fit, slender woman of British heritage who seemed as if she wanted up to break a Guinness world record for the fastest recorded hike through Johnston Canyon. I was expecting a leisurely stroll through the canyon. There would be "2 or 3 hills" she said. Good thing she wasn't hooked up to a polygraph at the time. I found myself stopping to take pictures & then having to rush to catch up with the rest of the group. Me being dressed in layers, being the thickest bodied person in our tour group & the fact that there were way more hills than advertised resulted in, you guessed it, me hitting a physical wall. Here I was, December in Canada & I'm sweating like I was wearing a sauna suit. The tour guide laughs and says, "I see some of you are breathing heavy. But rest assured that the air you're breathing in is fresh, clean CANADIAN air!" She also said, "You guys are gonna get your 10,000 steps in today." Were we at boot camp now? She pretty much dog-walked me through the bowels of Johnston Canyon that afternoon. Beautiful scenery though. 3) Discover Lake Louise: I celebrated my birthday (12/14/2019) with this tour. I arranged it at the last minute over the phone & without the coupon I paid $66.55 in USD. This turned out to be the best tour of them all. Lake Louise is about 35 miles from downtown Banff & was completely frozen over. There were people ice skating and playing hockey on it. It's near a plush hotel that has a shopping center & gift shops inside. The lake has a walking trail around it & is nestled in between mountains. The tour group was there for several hours & were allowed to split up & explore on our own before meeting the shuttle at a predetermined time. A couple of other things that made the Lake Louise tour my favorite was that there were several cute black women & a white couple on it who coincidentally were visiting from Atlanta. Small world! We got out several times on the way to take photos & even saw a bighorn sheep (a ram) casually licking salt from the road. We passed by an elk farm too. If you ever visit Banff, do not skip the Lake Louise tour. Despite my struggle stroll through Johnston Canyon, I still rate Discover Banff Tours a solid 5. I'm not even mad at that woman. In fact I gave her a tip just like I did the other guides. I should've been better prepared. If I visit Banff again, I'll revisit Johnston Canyon. The competitor in me won't let myself go out like that lol. This tour company is the most thorough in Banff. They offer way more tours than the ones I went on. They have dogsledding, horse draw sleigh rides, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cave exploration, helicopter rides, skiiing, a visit to a wolfdog sanctuary & even an excursion to Calgary to catch a Flames hockey game. This tour was almost a total wast of time. Let's start with the only good part of the tour. They got us to the gondola on time for our ride up the mountain. They were 45 minutes late picking us up. The tour guide, who they said was new, was not good at all. It was not just because he did not know some of his facts, as he was corrected by other passengers on the bus, his delivery was poor. We took the Discover Banff tours Grotto Canyon Ice Walk. Loved that they pick you up from a central location in Canmore. We had a brief 10 minute walk from our AirBnb to the pickup point where we met our guide for the hike, Gina. From our pickup point it was a quick 15 minute drive to the trailhead. Along the drive Gina pointed out local mountain ranges and explained how the mountains formed. The hike follows a frozen riverbed through a canyon past frozen waterfalls and ancient pictographs up to the turn-around point where we enjoyed great views of a beautiful valley and the surrounding peaks where Gina provided the group with maple cookies and hot chocolate. Gina was an amazing guide as her love for the area and it's resources was evident. Gina is a great ambassador to the area and the surrounding parks. read more

We booked their excursion to Johnston Canyon ice walk. There's a lot of communication between them and you to make sure you're well informed well before your trip. They pick u up in their small bus right in the lobby of your hotel and they drop you off right infront of it as well, which is convinient. Johnston Canyon ice walk is a 4 hour or so excursion. Takea about 30 min to drive there from Banff. They provide you with strap on crampons so your not slipping and sliding down the mountain. Also a walking stick if you want. And some hot chocalate and maple cookie at the top of the trail. Our guide's name is Hugh. And he was very informative. Talking about the history of Johnston Canyon, continually stopping along the way to take some pictures and take a breather. Very friendly and talkative. Starting conversations with everyone in the group. The pace he set was a little fast for the older people in the group. But he was accomadating. Always checking on the ones lagging behind. Reason this particular review dropped a star was that this entire excursion could've been done for free. Parking is free. People were going up in their tennis shoes. Granted you learned a lot about the history of Johnston Canyon, but thats what google is for. Next time I would do this hike (and this particular excursion) myself and save the $50ish per person that it cost. We also booked the Banff gondola ride through them. Their customer support was great. Helped me with my questions and problems. Their website is easy to use and informative. I wouldn't mind booking thru them again. read more

Definitely one of the best experiences I have had. Hugh, Aaron, and Anick were great guides. They all had unique personalities that made them either really funny or great people to start a conversation. Without their help, I would have been either slipping and sliding down the mountain or been missing out on the interesting facts they provided along the tour. I booked the Johnston Canyon Ice Walk, Snowshoeing and Dog Sledding/Lake Louise respectfully. The gear they provided was definitely a plus because I was not aware of the importance of it until I saw it in action. Every moment I was there was well worth soaking their knowledge. I don't usually experience there types of activities back home in Los Angeles so having someone to guide us along made all the difference. The highlight of the Johnston Canyon Ice Walk was seeing all the ice hanging from the rock walls due to water seeping out from them. It gave them a nice blue tint because of how dense it is. Hugh was making sure the entire group was safe because there were parts where ice developed along the trail. You could tell our group felt safe having him around. Snowshoeing provided the cardio I needed for skipping the gym and eating too much for the 5 days I was in Banff. The views were beautiful, especial since it was snowing the time I was there. It felt like pillow stuffing coming down from the clouds. Aaron made some Maple Taffy half way through our tour. It was my first time rolling one up in the snow and after eating it, I was impressed how good it came out since it was my first time trying it. I will definitely need to try it out in my fridge at home with a block of ice since it doesn't snow here. I made sure to stock up on maple syrup become coming back. Lastly the Dog Sledding/Lake Louise was another unforgettable experience I will never forget. Anick was on time at our hotel. She is really a good conversation starter and had a lot to say about the surrounding environment. She even stopped for us to see the wildlife which was really generous of her. Once we got to the dogsledding location, we had time to spend some time with the animals. They really enjoy people scratching behind their ears. Once we got in the sled and left, you can hear nothing but peace and quiet. I recommend layering up because the cold air gets to you when you are not actively moving. Once we were done, Anick took the time to show us around the Fairview hotel and the activities they had going on. Overall, it was a great experience booking there tours with Discover Banff Tours. I would definitely book again. I would like to give a heads up to other people planning to book. Please be outside your hotel at the time they provide in your email. They have a schedule to pick everyone up at the time they provided and if one person is running late then it is not fair for everyone else who are on time. Johnston Canyon Ice Walk with Guide Gina!! VERY grateful to have her as our guide. She is extremely smart and knowledgeable about Banff and especially the tours. She is native to Canada, so she shares her knowledge of wildlife and good practices on how Canada tries to protect its ecosystem. SHE is clearly a leader and should be the person all guides should strive to be. In regards to the ice walk, it was a magical crystal experience seeing all of the ice and flowing water underneath. I have no idea why people are giving them bad reviews. We had such a wonderful time "discovering" Banff on their tours! Discover Banff & Its Wildlife Tour with Nicole was so much fun. She is so funny and I loved that she added some educational stuff on the tour. This tour is a must because if you're a tourist like myself and don't know the area very well, it is very hard to know where the good views are. You basically go around Banff on the bus and get on and off at different viewpoints and take pictures. Because of this tour, we got some breath-taking photos! We also did the Lake Louise Tour with Hugh. Hugh was really awesome as well. He was funny and made the bus ride to the lake really fun and interesting. The Lake Louise Tour is basically a shuttle ride to and from the lake. On the way to the lake we did stop once to get a great view of Castle Mountain. You get a 3-4 hours at the lake if you aren't dog-sledding. If you are dog-sledding, then you get a little less time. We went during a period of time where it isn't really the start of the season but it was still icy and cold at the lake so 3 hours at the lake felt long. We weren't able to ice skate or even go on a sleigh ride because it wasn't available just yet this winter season. However, the views at the lake are amazing and definitely worth the trip. A complete waste of $. Our driver showed up 35 minutes late, offered no apology and then tells us we only have 30 minutes at Lake Louise? Where is the value in that? They told me that the 30 minutes was in the trip details.....to be clear, it is in the FAQs, but not in the trip description which advertises it as a 4 hour trip to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. Has this detail been in the trip description, I would never have joined. So, to "right" a "wrong", my girlfriend and I fortunately drove in our car back to Lake Louise in the afternoon, waited until 4pm when tourists cleared out, and spent 2 glorious hours at Lake Louise without time pressure. read more

I loved all three of the tours we took through Discover Banff Tours. The Night Johnston Canyon ice walk was lead by Jeff. Snowshoeing through Marble Canyon was led by Hugh. Lake Louise Tour was led by Denise. Each of these guides were excellent in their own way. I loved how each tour came with a little snack. My favorite was the maple syrup taffy! I think the snowshoeing was my favorite activity because of how beautiful the trail was and we really lucked out with the weather. It was snowing and sunny! I personally liked the all-inclusive aspect of these tours because we did not rent a car. Banff is super easy to get around town, so I felt like these tours got us out into nature where we could not have easily gotten without renting a car. I always felt very safe. All three tour guides were knowledgeable, kind, and passionate. You could tell they all loved their jobs. I was very impressed. If you are like me and like to learn about the area you are in from a tour guide, I highly recommend Discover Banff tours. read more

Took the 3 hour wildlife tour with Eli and his associate who's name I don't want to butcher... It was amazing! They were both amazing guides. Eli knew the best places to to show us amazing views and wildlife and he had great stories and information to tell us the whole time. A great trip with great guides at the best time of the year (No people around). Thank you for the wonderful tour. It was a great way to start our trip in Banff. Banff is one of the most spectacular places on this Earth. It had been on my bucket list for quite a while. I would be lying if the breathtaking view didn't influence my review! We visited the weekend after Canadian Victoria Day long weekend (May) and were faced with mild crowds. With Discover Banff Tours, we did the Columbia Icefields Parkway Tour, leaving at 8 AM in the morning. The cost was $260 CAD per adult. This is what it included: a pickup from Banff town, a wonderful tour guide to share her knowledge of the area on our drive up to the Columbia Icefields visitors center, a ticket to walk the glaciers via a specialized vehicle (Ice Explorer! tour), a ticket for the Glacier Skywalk experience, a packed lunch, and a return ride to Banff town. Price wise: An adult ticket to the Skywalk+Ice Explorer is $103, rental car $77/day, a packed lunch could be $7, fuel cost for the drive up ~$18. So you're paying a ~$60 premium per person for the tour guide's time and knowledge. Our travel vehicle was a medium sized van that fit with a group size of around 8 or 10. There was plenty of seating room, with large windows for the van to look out through for any wildlife and the abundance of mountains. We arrived at one of the set pickup locations within Banff town, and found the vehicle was around 10 mins behind what we were expecting, but all was well. Our lunch was a vegetarian wrap, an apple, juice box, salted potato chips and two bite brownies. Satisfying, light, and we stopped at a great picnic location near some part of the Saskatchewan River. Having a guide drive you up the Icefields Parkway means that the driver can also enjoy the experience, and doesn't have to focus on the road. I do wish that they had done a better job of guiding us towards the best option for parking, since we had to leave our rental car behind in Banff town for the whole day for this tour - and were unfamiliar with the best way to do so. Overall, I do recommend this tour by Discover Banff Tours! They take care of you and our guide was knowledgeable and warm. We also purchased tickets for other attractions such as Banff Trail Riders (horseback ride), Banff Sightseeing Gondola (a ride up Sulfur mountain), and the Banff Upper Hot Springs. When we picked up the tickets for these attractions, we found the process easy to do and were greeted by friendly staff. read more

Just went on the ice walk to Johnston's Creek with our tour guide Becky, and enjoyed it thoroughly. She gave us just enough info to keep it like a guided tour, but not so much information that it was drab and overwhelming. She provided us with anecdotal information, myths, and some science. Pointed out fossils in the mountains and stopped every so often for pictures. I'd recommend the 8am tour, as that's the one we took. By the time we left around noon, the whole mountain was packed with self-guided tourists, and the snow was packed tight and slippery from frequent passing. If you're going on your own, BUY/RENT ice cleats to strap on your shoes. SNOW SHOES ARE NOT ENOUGH. People were slipping all around us. I felt the tour was well worth the $, however. Only 12 people max on the tour, and she got to point out much that we would've missed. Plus the ice cleats and snow/ice hiking stick helped grip the ice for safety and a quick hike. 5 stars!!!! read more

My wife and I were visiting from San Diego and we decided to do this tour because we wanted something a bit more sedentary after our hiking adventure that left us sore and tired. The bus picks you up from your hotel, drives you around to different places, lets you take pictures, and takes you back. You get cookies and hot chocolate at the halfway point. Our tour was about 4 hours. Deets: Nicole was our tour guide for the Banff tour. Former park ranger, she knows the good spots, is very knowledgeable about the wildlife, and is wicked funny. The tour goes to different destination points that are pretty off-grid; unless you know exactly what you're looking for, these places were pretty hidden. I have no idea who was our tour guide for the Lake Louise tour. But this tour was basically a shuttle ride to the Lake Louise, with a small stopover at Castle Mountain. Views were amazing. TL;DR Banff is worth it. Rent a car for Lake Louise. read more
