This is a big lake located near the town of Banff and like all the others around here, quite scenic. During our late September visit, we also got to enjoy a bit of the fall colors making their first appearance. The surrounding area for visitors is flat and there is an easy trail that goes around a portion of the lake's periphery. There are also some good picnic areas with a view of the lake.

Calm your mind and open your senses to an array of nature sure to relax mind and body! Nature truly is the best prescription for healing your spirit and body while clearing your mind! Feel the stress and worries melt away as you walk in the wonder of nature and stop to listen! No noise pollution, just birds chirping and the waves lapping the shore with the wisp of an occasional breeze traversing the placid mirror that is Lake Minnewanka!!

One of my favorite spots we visited while in Banff! One of the lesser talked about lakes in the area (if you're an out of towner at least), Lake Minnewanka is a short drive or bus ride away from downtown. We used Roam public transit to get here, takes you right from town to the entrance of the Lake. A great option to avoid having to deal with parking, which filled very quickly when we were there. The lake has a boat cruise, boat rentals, hiking, gift shop, and a snack shack. On our Visit we partook in just about everything except for the boat rental - we were unsure how the weather would be so we opted for the cruise. Would definitely rent a kayak or canoe if I were to come back here though. For hiking we did a portion of the Stewart canyon trail, which was my personal highlight from our time at the lake. Due to the approaching bear season that was just days away, and the Lake being on the edge of grizzly territory, we made it to the bridge and then turned back. Important to note: if you plan to come here in mid July through September it is stated that you should hike in groups of four and have at least two cans of bear spray. We didn't see any bears during our time on the trail and felt safe the whole time, but didn't want to risk it being a twosome with no bear spray. After our hike we hit the Black Anchor snack shack. Options were limited to burgers, hotdogs, and similar items. We opted for hot dogs and chips which were ready just in time for us to catch the bus to our next lake. On the way out we saw a big horned sheep in the road, apparently this is one of the best spots in Banff to see them. Really cool to see in person!

Lake Minnewanka (Water of the Spirits) I would highly recommend for families with small kids as well as history or geography buffs, to take the lake cruise. The fun easy going 1 hour cruise & presentation is excellent & informative. https://www.banffjaspercollection.com/ The seats were how can I say this delicately ... a wee bit Jet Blue ish or Ryanair type ... you know so tight were your knee is touching the back of the seat in front of you. I thought the seats on the boat we were on, could have been a little higher up the window line for better viewing. Recommend bringing a small seat cushion if you have one. Our presenter & captain did a swell job! Kudos to them making the ride safe & enjoyable! A Lake Minnewaka cruise provides an alternative way of experiencing Banff National Park. https://youtu.be/CoQqhFmz0fU Would I say this is a must ... nope. However, if you're considering it & have extra time & want to know a bit of history about this area ... why not! Hot Tip News Alert - after completion of the cruise & upon leaving the parking lot, make sure to take & follow the 'Two Jack Lake' routing! Why ... well because you might be lucky to come across some wildlife ... see my Big Horn Sheep pics! It's a slow & scenic route. It eventually gets you back towards the main road heading back to downtown Banff & is absolutely worth it! You're welcome!

My favorite place to visit every year I come to Banff. The lake is beautiful and within the vicinity are two more lakes that have the same levels of beauty - Two Jack Lake and Johnson Lake. The mountains bordering the lake are amazing and the lakeside trail is an easy hike that takes you to different vantage points too. Highly recommend this less touristy area of Banff for serenity and gorgeous views.

Beautiful lake and beautiful views. We decided to do a polar plunge on the shore and everyone in group had so much fun doing it. Th water is freezing but it's worth the experience. They have hiking trails and boat rentals as well. The entrance road is actually a loop and I recommend driving up one side and down the other to get mixed views!

This was our final rainy day activity of the day today. We came to do the Stewart Canyon hike. It's about 1-1.5 km from the parking lot, so it's a very quick hike. The trail is almost completely flat and very easy. The only downside today which was that it was very muddy. At the end of the hike there's a bridge with a nice overlook of the canyon. The views of the lake along the way are great. The lake is a very pretty blue green color. There was plenty of parking when we got there around noon, but by the time we left around 2, it was completely full. If you're looking for an easy hike in Banff, this is a good one.

Serenity can be found here, but to find it you've got to getaway from the parking area! After my visit I imagine the most serene way to experience this Lake would be from the water. The lake is massive, flanked by incredibly powerful mountains on all sides. It would take a decent boat to make your way across the lake from end to end across any axis. Visiting in early Winter, the boat house had closed for the season, so I didn't have the option. I did spot a few folks in a canoe, and I immediately thought how brave they must be to paddle a tiny and unstable vessel out into the middle of a frigidly cold lake. Or maybe I was thinking how foolish they must've been to go out there in the first place? No matter. More importantly, seeing the canoe really illustrated the scale of the environment. The canoe appeared so reachably close, yet so small that it felt far away. Voices would carry a little, but you couldn't make out the words. It seemed so small because it was the smallest thing out there! This lake is beautiful, and I can only imagine what it's like to hang out in the warmer months. It's so easy to get to from Banff too. Truly, Banff is breathtaking.

WOW this is a very beautiful lake. Its located inside Banff. Its great that this year is Canada's 150 birthday, which means that free parking. There are two areas that you can stop and take pictures. OMG the water was emerald green on one side and the other was blue. I was amazed. You really have to come here to check this lake out. Stunning and amazed.

This is one of the most beautiful places in the Banff region. It was recommended to us by one of our friends and was amazing. Having said that, on a busy day, be ready to face parking woes. We went there on the Sunday of the Canada Day long weekend and it was jam-packed. It is a few kilometers off the Trans-Canada highway - just before Banff. On our way to the lake after getting off the highway, we saw cars lined up on the side of the road as much as 2.5-3 kilometers before the lake. There is a parking lot next to the lake and it has staff guiding the cars. However, it can get full easily and you find a spot will totally rest on someone pulling out their car. The lake itself is great. Absolutely breathtaking mountains and a pristine lake. It's a good place to picnic as well. One can boat as well, as we saw many people loading and unloading their boats back to their trucks. They have a cruise but I didn't see people too excited about that as even on the super busy day, there weren't many people opting for the cruise. Overall, definitely recommended if you're going to Banff but try to go on a non-busy day, if possible.

This place was gorgeous! We came in the middle of October and the road to Lake Morraine was closed and I believe this was a good substitution. This lake was huge and gorgeous. It was also an easy walk around. The trail above Lake Louise was frozen and slick but there wasn't snow around LM. This lake is very close to Banff and wasn't nearly as crowded as Emerald Lake or Lake Louise. I think it's a great spot to checkout. The drive is pretty and we even saw some mountain goats on drive. I highly suggest checking this lake out!

The lake was still slightly frozen over, which just made the reflections so stellar.

This hike is located near a residential area in Canmore. Follow your GPS navigation which ultimately will take you down a single road, surrounded by tall evergreen trees, and a small dirt lot on the left for parking before you embark on the trail. A few recommendations: Park on the street as the lot fills up quick, bring sunscreen, and take the harder trail. Initially when starting the hike there will be two signs for the "Easy" and "More Difficult" trail paths. Trust me when I say the more difficult path is worth the extra strenuous steps. We had no idea that halfway through the path you stumble upon a gorgeous waterfall and incredible views of a giant lake surrounded by beautiful mountains. Then as you continue on this trail, you'll ultimately come to a clearing with emerald and turquoise lakes which is the perfect spot to stop, indulge in a quick snack, and soak in all those spectacular views. All in all if you take the not so easy trail you'll complete the entire thing within an hour and a half, including those moments where you stop and contemplate just gorgeous this country is. One final tip: bring Bear spray and attach bells to your hiking gear. The last thing you want to do is startle a bear and end up in a frightening situation. Luckily we did not see any bears on the trail, but we did see a Black Bear crossing the road as we were leaving the parking lot! We heard from locals that Canmore has a lot of Bear sightings so just plan ahead, be aware of your surroundings, and enjoy your fantastic hike on this beautiful trail!

For me, anything or event that encourages picture taking is perfect. The views on Lake Minnewanka were perfect. This should be on everyone's 'must see / do list' Remember you are in a National Park, so you must get a parking pass for the park...or you WILL get a ticket. Luckily... we came by bus tour. No cars to worry about. The staff at the Lake are amazing from the moment you arrive. You can hike trails, rent canoes or kayaks or take the boat ride. Dress warmly, as it gets cold in the winter months and the water is NEVER warm! Our wonderful guide made sure to explain that to us. There was a nice vibe between the crew and visitors. Another nice piece to this trip. This was simply relaxing and what else could you be looking for on a vacation than to do something that puts a smile on your face and allows you to sit back and relax. It was nice to stand outside the back of the boat and enjoy the view. Their only restriction was to keep the count no higher than eight. Even with a full boat it worked out just fine. Lake Minnewanka is beautiful and we took this cruise on the most gorgeous day. We had 8 people on our boat tour, which seemed to be less than usual. Our tour guide told us all about the lake and some fun banff stories for about 30-40 minutes, then we stopped for about 5-10 min to take pics on the deck and then rode back in silence. It was a beautiful hour on the lake, but i found myself wishing we used that time to walk around town or do another hike instead. We were told parking at Lake Minnewanka is impossible (like all parts of Banff), but we did get pretty lucky with a spot right away. We also ate lunch at their snack shack which wasn't anything special (hot dog for me and a ginormous slice of pizza for my husband), but convenient. Overall, a fine experience since the weather was so gorgeous, but not one I'd repeat if back in Banff.

Up a beautiful mountain road going 50km/h it's a super nice drive. The campground is a few loops that are easy to access but the higher numbers are literally right next to the road with few trees as a barrier (i.e. roads are visible and cars are audible). Campsites: We stayed at site 46...it was a pretty good option but not the best. We were surrounded by a yurt on one side, a campsite on the other and 3 campsites in front of us all perfectly visible because the trees are tall and thin and sparse between the sites. But we had a beautiful view through the trees of this opening where the mountains and Two Jack Lake are visible. Sites 1-13 and 55-74 should be entirely avoided in my opinion....they are visible from the road and from them you can see and hear the road perfectly (almost no obstruction). Sites 14-35 are walk-ins and hit or miss with the choices...some are good choices because of the view of the mountains and lake...others suk cuz they're practically glued to one another with little buffer space. Sites 36-54 are a mixture of sites and yurts (that are so nice we actually ended up regretting not getting one of those despite being avid tent campers) the even numbers are mostly along the trail, mostly with view of mountains and lake, mostly beautiful sites. They are hit and miss because of the privacy (or rather lack thereof) between the sites...but the beautiful view and tranquility for the most part makes it worth it. I really loved site 42 but despite booking the very first possible day in January 2017 for June 2017 we still didn't get even one of the 4 sites we tried to get. Scenery: So pristine. So picturesque. So breathtakingly seriously awesome. And the smell of the mountain air and the pines in the forest oh wow! The brisk mountain air and the turquoise and marine blue lake surrounded by the snow capped moutains that bask in the sun in the almost neverending sun set (10pm still totally bright out!!)...oh wow! Weather: mountain weather... It rained a LOT. It was cold a LOT. It was a bit windy especially when it rained. The clouds swirled and whirled and for the most part you have no idea if it will rainy or be sunny from one minute to the next. And likely will end up being both. BUILD A WIND AND RAIN SHELTER ASAP! Commodities/Accommodations: - DOGS ALLOWED!! - Bathrooms: easily accessible and close at all times, clean, flushable toilets, hot water, those 15-second high pressured hot showers (loved those!), high pressure warm air hand dryer, never waited. - All-You-Can-Burn-Firewood : AYCBF!! There's a pile that they replenish several times through the day, it does get wet when it rains but the wood burned super well despite that (plus we gathered a bunch to keep dry under a tarp so that helped), help yourself to all you can carry there's always plenty!! - Fire pits are short iron rings with attached grills and two side plates...super efficient and perfect. - Picnic tables are gigantic, thick and immovable but usually close enough to the fire anyways so makes for nice dinners but u could still put a kitchen tent up if u wanted - Yurt sites seemed to have electricity access they also apparently came with propane and these kool stove things - Ice NOT AVAILABLE at the campground for purchase?!? No camp store on site. Had to drive to Banff (12 minute drive no biggy) and buy ice at a gas station (4$ per bag yo!!!) - Sites are usually big enough for any type of trailer/RV and / or tents n shelters combinations - there are large kitchen shelter structures u can bring ur firewood and use the wood stove n make a meal in the shelter in the rain, they're big enough for 4-5 familes to use at once but were usually empty. Prices: ~41$ per night June 2017 (National Park entrance fee waived with Parks Canada free entry for Canada's 150th anniversary so I have no idea how much more it woulda been)...seems pretty pricey but firewood included so not so much actually. Activities: Go see Banff and Lake Minnewanka while ur in the area! Each about 10 minutes either direction and both totally worth it!! Can purchase fishing licenses or rent boats from Lake Minnewanka. Plenty of hiking trails ...that make or may not be open due to wildlife... Wildlife: Bears, wolves: we didn't see any but there were sightings in the area prior to our arrival. Plenty of geese. Plenty of ginormous ravens. Herons. A few large mystery birds of prey. Long horn rams at Lake Minnewanka (guaranteed photo ops they're all chillin on the road). Elk (which kept their distance). Saw plenty of lil minnows in the lake but didn't end up buying licenses so didn't fish. A few mini squirrels or long tailed chipmunks...hard to say for sure. Plenty of deer. Very very few insects flying or otherwise...even the bees were awesome but huge (not aggressive or invasive, just hey how are u and fly away)
