They took the shirt off my back ... and then they lost it!…read more I have gone to this hospital for decades and generally have been satisfied. However, yesterday I had an experience that needs to be corrected. I was admitted to the ER for a cardiac issue and then moved to the cardiac observation unit for the remainder of the day and overnight. Unfortunately, the orderly who transported me -- he had black hair and a black beard -- used a gurney to transport and lost two articles of clothing. I don't know his name, but I distinctly remember the bag that held the clothing fell off the gurney and i remember him retrieving it. However, when I was discharged today, that bag could not be found in my room. it contained a T shirt and a grey long-sleeve dress shirt with a button-down collar my mother bought for me. That shirt has great sentimental value and I notified the Public Safety Unit and the ER of what happened. We could not find the shirt today, but I was told to call in a day since "it is probably sitting on a cart somewhere. Since my mother passed away four years ago at about this time, I'm sure you can understand how much that shirt means to me. An error becomes a mistake only if you fail to correct it, and I hope the person who handled my clothing and Public Safety can correct this mistake. To be clear, I had a decent experience with ER personnel and got excellent care from the cardiac unit. I only hope that my shirt can be found. if not, this will be a Christmas Eve I will be forced to remember --and not in a good way.

My wife was admitted to Select Specialty Hospital Milwaukee (St Francis) in April 2023 following…read moreemergency surgery and 30 days in ICU on a ventilator and sedated. She was conscious, no longer had a trachea or feeding tube, but was non-ambulatory due to muscle atrophy. The purpose of her transfer was to help her regain the ability to walk and all that this entails. Prior to the hospital transferring her, I read reviews on-line about both Select Specialty's Milwaukee locations which were quite concerning- both from the patient care, and nursing/medical staff. Our experience was no better. I will start by saying that many of their nursing staff were excellent, caring professionals who treated my wife very well. Some were not so caring, or perhaps were so over-burdened that they simply didn't have time to provide the level of care needed for. Or they had many duties to do at the nursing station, because that's where they all seemed to be most times, bent over their phones. Most doctor visits involved an MD poking their head in the door, maybe coming bedside. These visits were usually over in 60 seconds or less. Daily Physical therapy usually was two aides sliding her from her bed to a recliner that folded flat, and then they would sit her up in the recliner. This was extremely uncomfortable both for my wife and myself the times I tried it They would leave her in the chair for 2-3 hours, then back to the bed for 21 hours. After 2-3 days I asked for a meeting with their Staff to review their Treatment Plan and told them we were quite dissatisfied with her daily PT; no strengthening, no sitting up, nothing that would assist her to reaching a point she could walk We discussed exercises she could do in bed to strengthen her core, abs, hamstrings, glutes etc.; asked if they has something like Parallel bars with an assist hoist and harness that they could use to get her standing and eventually taking her first steps. They were all rainbows and unicorns...yes sir we'll start the extra PT immediately. And the next day the PT crew brought in a rubber band to her bed to do some leg work. For 1/2 hour- because they only have ONE physical therapist to cover 25 patients, only Mon-Friday. Cut to the chase- after 25 days, I get a call on a Friday that they were able to assist her get standing, ad she was able to take 12 steps, assisted. The following Monday I was told that she had to be discharged as our insurance had denied last week's treatment/stay. We were lucky that by being ambulatory she was able to be transferred to a different Rehab facility in Waukesha (Rehabilitation Hospital of Wisconsin) that did REAL PT for 3-4 hours a day. I cannot say enough GREAT things about them- they literally had her up and able to walk in just a couple days, and she was discharged in 12 days...walking, able to stand and sit.

There is a lack of communication. My husband got transferred there on February 28th. They had meds…read morescrewed up. Gave him stuff he no longer is on. I told the doctor remove them from his list of meds. Then when he said he was nauseous. It took over an hour to get something for that. Speech therapist and Respiratory therapist were nice. Nursing staff on my husbands area seemed so so. Like they would only do the bare minimum in work. No communication. They say I need to ask. Umm I'm medical power of attorney. So I should automatically be given updates how he is doing. I will be seeing him daily. I will make sure he gets the care he needs. Then a cardiologist was monitoring his heart rate. He didn't even look at the medical records sent over from Froetdert. That show he has a stent. I had to say it. To be asked when he got that. I said November 2019. Care has been only so so in the rehab part. A PT person blurts it out in front of my husband. He will never stand or walk again. They hadn't really tried standing him up. Twice they tried sitting him up in bed. Not much else was done PT and OT wise. They moved his arms and legs a little. Thank God my husband lost the trach and the oxygen. He'll be going to a regular rehab in a couple days. I don't recommend this place. They seem to be short staffed all the time on CNA's. Sure a couple great housekeeper women there. A few good nurses. Not the place I expected it to be. The website says what they treat there. It said PT, OT was part of it all. Well they don't have much in PT stuff there. Like a PT gym. Well not one I seen there. The visitation hours are stupid. 8am to 8pm. They say Oh because of Covid. Like from 8pm till 8am you can get Covid. A spouse should be allowed to stay with a spouse 24/7 if they choose to. What gets me part of the charting is done on paper. Get with the times. Many places are on Epic on the computer.
