Look, any place that's got the Balboa Theatre, Chino's, and Simple Pleasures can't be half or even a quarter or even an eighth or even a sixteenth bad.
That three may not be a triumvirate, especially since Simple Pleasures is the one and only dominator, but it represents a great deal of what keeps bringing me back to this part of the Outer Richmond.
I've had good Italian deli sides here as well. And that atrocious building they built at the southeast corner of Balboa & 36th? I really miss the empty lot that preceded it and seemed like it would remain an empty lot forever.
There's also at least one laundromat with a crazy ventilation system, although I've never had the need to launder my clothes in public in the Richmond. I'd say it will never happen, but then I said I'd probably never live in the Mission either, and look what happened.
The 31-Balboa remains my chariot of choice when Simple Pleasures-ing, but parking really isn't that tough to find, even in the midst of the various places to eat and drink and shop. There, I said it.
One of my favorite parts of taking the bus here is going home on a different bus. Yes, I normally walk down the hill on 36th and catch the 5-Fulton or the 5R-Fulton Rapid. It's a lovely walk, and it's good for me, and there are usually families out washing their cars or bringing in groceries or otherwise going about their business.
I love the Outer Richmond and often miss it. People only seem to move away from it. read more
