Bison in San Francisco? Yep it's true and you can find them at the Golden Gate Park. You can find the herd next to Spreckels Lake, along John F. Kennedy Drive. In 1891, one bison cow and one bison bull were transported here to make Golden Gate Park their home. Staff from the San Francisco Zoo care for the Bison here. They provide care, feeding and veterinary services, while the San Francisco Recreation and Park department maintain the grounds. If you wish to view the live webcam of the buffalo, you can view it here (https://www.goldengatepark150.com/bison). There may or may not be any activity though when you click on it. For the 150th anniversary of buffalo first making their home here, 5 young bison were introduced to the existing herd here. Free to visit and park. I came by here on a Saturday afternoon with my husband and our little girl dog. A friend of mine had suggested it since we had just came from a long road trip from Los Angeles to Yellowstone and Grand Teton (and had visited several other national parks along the way). Although we did see plenty of bison in both Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton (and much closer than we did at this park), my friend brought up the idea in case we did not know there were bison here in San Francisco. So around 2:30 pm, we were able to find plenty of parking along side the fenced in area of these massive creatures. There weren't too many people around so it was nice to watch them quietly. We saw just a few as they were just grazing. But they do have a large area to roam so I can only imagine the rest of the herd was much further away. Golden Gate Park in such a magical wonder and am always finding so much delight every time I visit.

"My place is with you. I go where you go." - Kicking Bird (Lakota), Dances with Wolves What?! You haven't seen or heard about the Buffalos of Golden Gate Park? Talk about being late to the party! The hors d'oeuvres are long since gone, the DJ looks ready for retirement and the New Year's revelers are doing the Electric Slide for the fifth time. Still, tardiness may not diminish the appeal of this American legend! Now the Buffalo vs. Bison debate: What Native Americans saw 500 years ago is the great American Bison and not really Buffalo in name. The use of "Buffalo" actually first came from European settlers who mistakenly thought they were old world Buffalo (found in Africa or Asia). So the old song... "where the Buffalo roam..." should really be... "where the Bison roam.." The history of the American Bison at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco goes back to 1890, story goes that a distinct Bison cow and one Bison bull were transported from the rolling Great Plains to the urban paradise of the Golden Gate Park in California. Hailing from parts of Wyoming and Kansas, the cow was named "Sarah Bernhardt", while the bull was called "Ben Harrison". Named after popular celebrities of the time. As years became decades... more and more Bison called Golden Gate Park home. By the 1990's an estimated 100 calves were born here on the Paddock. 100 years and 100 calves later... This San Francisco herd helped North America surpass the 200,000 mark for the great American Bison, this after being on the brink of extinction for many years due to European settlers over hunting these majestic animals of God. Today, the American Bison population has more than doubled in size, to well over 500,000, and some have actually been reintroduced into the wild. Still, with all the good news it'll never reach the 60 million that once roamed the Americas prior to European settlers and the introduction of domesticated cattle. Sad, but true. In the end, a visit to the Paddock "where the Bison roam..." is a magical experience for those into American history and animal conservation. Kids would love a visit too! Trust! To imagine these great American treasures were nearly extinct brings a tear to my eye... and it all started with "Sarah Bernhardt" and "Ben Harrison"... May God Bless America and the Bison that roam...

Yes, there are Bison in SF, in particular Golden Gate Park!! I counted about 10 Bison, and they were somewhat active. They have a large area to roam in, and are a great attraction. I make it a point every time I come to Golden Gate Park to come here, chill out and watch them do the roam thing. A great option when in the Park!!

The bison are an extension of the SF Zoo ... ifs always lovely watching these beasts roam around.

Golden Gate Park is full of little pocket gems like the Shakespeare Garden and magical, grand swaths of green grass and trees like Hellman Hollow. And mystically, a Bison Paddock! I purposely took the long way across town through Golden Gate Park to the outer Richmond and reveled that we're lucky to live in such a beautiful city with its green, undeveloped expanses and quirky things- Like Buffalo. In Golden Gate Park. It's kind of crazy and a little cool, much like its residents.

"Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam, Where the deer and the antelope play, Where seldom is heard a discouraging word And the skies are not cloudy all day..." -- John A. Lomax (1910) When I saw my friend, Alana's, check in, I couldn't believe it! Bison at Golden Gate Park? In all the years that I have visited San Francisco, I hadn't known about this phenomenon! This was on the top of my list of things to see! One misty, overcast, and chilly day in March 2016, my cousin, Marilyn, and her husband, Philip, drove my Travel Buddy, Yuri, and me through Golden Gate Park to see the Bison! Woot woot! They were out in the pasture, calmly nibbling at the lawn! It's so amazing! I want to visit them again! There's free parking along the street and no admission fee! Let's go!

Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam Where the deer and the antelope play Where seldom is heard a discouraging word And the skies are not cloudy all day Home, home on the range Where the deer and the antelope play Where seldom is heard a discouraging word And the skies are not cloudy all day... I wonder if these bison know about the Bullshead Restaurant in West Portal. My friend Maggie and I were taking a less-than-brisk walk through Golden Gate Park last weekend when the weather was very nearly perfect. As we passed by the cement pool that is Spreckels Lake, I was starting to get worried that they would stampede knowing that I have enjoyed eating a buffalo burger at Bullshead. When we walked past the paddock on our way to the Park Chalet, we saw them lounging way in the distance under the shadow of a mammoth tree. Ah, the drawback of natural habitat areas is that they naturally habituate. Coming back from our minuscule burger at the Park Chalet (just beef, not buffalo), they were up close and grazing as a group (see photos). Much better though they couldn't be bothered by the gawking families strolling and cycling by. Since there were only five head in the herd, I wouldn't expect a replay of "Dances with Wolves" here. No, that would be "Avatar". Let's just hope the Park or Beach Chalet don't start serving Buffalo Steak Bearnaise on the menu. Or else it will be one empty field with a lot of petrified manure. By the way, for old movie trivialists, that's Ralph Bellamy and the crush-worthy Irene Dunne singing "Home on the Range" from the classic 1937 (yes, 1937!) screwball comedy, "The Awful Truth". Respect, kiddies.

Just like most of outer sunset, you can expect many cold and cloudy days. They are open 10am-5pm, year round. We came recently on a cloudy and rainy day and it was not crowded at all. I don't know if it was the rain, but most of the animals were pretty active that day, which was pretty cool. Watching the giraffes eating when we first got there was pretty nice. Our favorite exhibit was the penguin exhibit on penguin island, especially because we came for the penguin feeding. It was so cute watching the penguins eating their fish, hiding in their island dome, and swimming around the island. Another favorite were the black bears because they were very active, running around their enclosure, going swimming, climbing the walls, and playing with each other. The aviaries, insect zoo, flamingos, lions, and kangaroos were nice to see also. The SF Zoo is a pretty good size so you'll need a map and you'll get plenty of steps in if you walk all of it. We had a good time, even though some areas were closed and some animals weren't home.

Upon entry, look to your right and you immediately feel like you are on a safari in Zimbabwe. Simply stunning. 2 stars for the virtual pod station because the girl working was snarky. Everything is from your phone. download, enter all (and I mean all) info and cc to pay for tickets. No other options available. Bye bye are the days of paying with a human being. And she was of no help... with her attitude. Ugh. My grandude did love the 7 minute virtual Whale movie. There are 4 choices to choose from. The one thing I want to mention is how deeply sad I felt for the larger animals. Silverback gorilla, bears, rhino, lions, etc. all seemed deeply sad and just sat there looking bored :( especially those like the big bird from Australia that was alone... made my heart sink. I know that a lot of animals are rescued.. but at this point.. I think they might be better off living their best life in their natural habitat. The giraffes & penguins seemed happy...but that was about it. I'm being serious. The wolves just going around on their small trail doing nothing... they need to hunt!! The play area was epic. The carousel was nice but again... bored attitude-y employee. $4 extra. bathrooms too far & in between. Nothing new there. About 3-4 exhibits had nothing. I'm so glad we went on a Wednesday... it wasn't busy at all. Parking $13... not too bad. Most of the car chargers were broken. 2 out of maybe 10 were working according to security. need to get those fixed. But the good news... close parking for EV's. But very limited. You definitely need to do this trip. take snacks and water... they don't check your bags. Have fun!

When i first walked in i thought it would be a small exhibit and i was totally wrong! After entering, you go through a area with smaller tanks and the gift shop. You then take a elevator down to the lower level where you're suddenly surrounded by huge glass tanks. The first exhibits feature beautiful jellyfish displays, which were mesmerizing to watch. Then you enter the large walk through tunnel, which was the highlight of the visit. The glass surrounds you everywhere even above your head. It truly feels like you're inside the tank with the sea life. One of my favorite moments was watching the sting rays glide right over the top of the tunnel. It was such a cool peaceful experience. The tunnel was much larger than expected, it tool about 40 minutes to take in everything. Overall, it was an amazing experience and I would definitely recommend visiting if you're in San Francisco.

My first complaint is the price - $30 for adults and children 4-12 are $22. Our son is under 2, so luckily we did not need to pay for him. The cost is unreasonable for the experience you end up getting. You also HAVE TO purchase the tickets online - there was no physical ticketing kiosk, so you are forced to pay the online fee. The second strike was that the direct elevator to the aquarium on the second floor of the building, was out. We had to walk our stroller all the way around the attached building and get on the elevator over there. It's not a huge deal, but a hassle for anyone who needs to use an elevator. Third strike was ANOTHER elevator within the aquarium was also out, so there was only ONE working elevator and it was a very busy Saturday afternoon, with a lot of people waiting. It also wasn't made very clear that there were stairs available for those that could use them. The fourth strike was that the exhibits were small and there didn't seem to be very many fish, especially in the tank tunnel. The moving walkway was also not working in the tunnel, so it would get a little backed up, as people would just stand there trying to look at the minimal amount of fish and handful of sharks swimming around. There was a pretty large touch tank for the kids and an otter exhibit. But to add insult to injury, the otters were sleeping, so we didn't even get to see them (not the aquarium's fault, but like I said, it just added to the laundry list of issues we were having with this facility). I hate to compare apples and oranges, but the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay Casino in Vegas is HUGE and has beautiful exhibits. The cost for an adult ticket there is $29, so that's where my expectations were and I was severely disappointed with this aquarium. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY, especially if you have children.

The Bay Area Discovery Museum somehow manages to feel exciting without feeling overwhelming. There are indoor exhibits, outdoor play areas, sensory stations, bubble activities, climbing structures, toddler-friendly areas, and sand play with Golden Gate Bridge views. The layout makes it easy for kids to naturally move from one activity to another without parents constantly redirecting the day. The overall vibe feels chill, playful, interactive, and very exploration-focused instead of overly chaotic or overstimulating. Quick guide below. What really stood out to me was how thoughtfully designed the museum feels for both children and parents. Many activity areas are staffed, which makes the experience feel more interactive and supported instead of parents having to carry the entire outing themselves. One staff member even pulled out a little guitar during one activity, and suddenly kids and parents were all singing together like a tiny spontaneous flash mob It gave the whole place a really warm, community feel instead of feeling like just another children's museum. I also loved the dedicated toddler play areas where bigger kids can't just run through and take over, which made it feel much calmer and safer for little ones still learning to explore independently. ------ QUICK GUIDE What matters: * Free parking available * Designed mainly for kids ages 0-8 * Indoor + outdoor children's activities * Toddler-friendly play areas * Bubble + sensory activities * Sand play area * Large climbing/play structures * Golden Gate Bridge views * Bathrooms throughout * Stroller-friendly paths * Staff throughout activity areas * Open space to roam and explore * Great for both low-stimulation and high-energy kids * Easy place to spend several hours with children ------ Pro tip: if you accidentally forget diapers or wipes, they have diaper backpacks stocked near the bathrooms -- one of those small details that makes the whole place feel genuinely parent-friendly. I was especially a fan of the Mary Poppins display, which featured studio story sketches, film posters, and photos of the actors with Walt Disney in 1964. I also really enjoyed the current exhibition, "Happiest Place on Earth: The Disneyland Story" in the Lower Lobby and Theater Gallery, which included a film screening of Happiest Place on Earth: Walt's Disneyland (2025) included with the admission price. The exhibit as a whole was quite interesting as someone who used to go to Disneyland multiple times per year (can't splurge like that anymore). I learned about Walt's vision and the evolution of each of the rides at the amusement park, especially some of my faves like the Haunted Mansion with original ideas stemming from a "museum of the weird" that was never built. The venue also offers a cafe with seating (open Thursday through Sunday 11-3pm) and a museum gift shop with plenty of Disney-themed goodies for all ages. Staff was professional and helpful, though not really involved in the self-guided tour. And parking in the area is easy and costs a small fee by the hour, payable by mobile app.
