Sadly the new Covid restrictions make it to where this is no longer a place I can go to have my massage therapy done. It started with heightened fees and mask requirements which was uncomfortable but I still wanted to work with the therapist I knew was skillful. Now that you are also required to prove your vaccination status and that your booster is current (and still wear a mask regardless), I will sadly not be able to support this business. If you are immune compromised or old and vulnerable, this may be a perfect space for you to feel extremely safe but for me personally it's become too much. I hesitate to share this. The first therapist I *matched* with at Balance was Chris. I wrote a big gushy review and the next thing I know I can never get an appointment with her. The secret? I don't mind anymore. I have a new *match* in David Paul. I walked into Balance at the last minute as usual. I was hunched over, my shoulders knotted up, my neck pinched, my feet aching, my ankles swollen and suffering with a headache that was threatening to ruin my whole weekend. I had opted for a half and half massage today. A half hour of reflexology and a half hour of back and shoulders. It is the world's most perfect combo, particularly for an uber tense person like me. David is super patient in untangling every single knot. If he can make me relax, he can probably turn you into a big pile of mush. Heck I was pretty close to there myself. David's like bacon, he makes everything better. I love that you can be quiet or chatty with him. Either way he goes with the flow. It's not awkward a bit. It feel like his only care is in making your body feel and work better, any way that makes you the most comfortable while he accomplishes that goal is all good with him. His techniques are a bit different than a lot of the local therapists, maybe because he did not get his training at Irene's or AAIMT (not that I don't adore therapists trained at either of those places :-) ). He has such a great back technique.You feel almost ironed, like the kinks are just straightened that easily. The strokes are mostly long, soothing and nicely insistent without ever feeling uncomfortable or like the pressure is too hard. Instead of tackling the problem areas with too much force in a manner that leaves you feeling bruised and battered, David's method feels more like coaxing your muscles into yielding like it was their own idea. The result is all the ease you are seeking without the ouch that can happen if you are super sensitive like I am. His method causes a wonderful deep down ahhhh feeling as the massage winds down for me. It is kind of incredible. Suffer from swollen ankles? On your feet all day? Just love a foot massage? Look no further. David is a magician. An angel. A godsend. My feet feel a-maz-ing. I feel incredible. So terrific I did something I never do, I rebooked for next month before I left. I made an actual commitment. This from a woman who has 782 reviews for different businesses around the greater Detroit/Ann Arbor area. I don't usually do loyalty. Called earlier in the week with some major upper back pain again. It had been a while since I saw the usual therapist I'd seen in the past (taking advantage of last minute happy hour massages) so when I asked for him I was informed he was no longer there. DRAT. They asked me a few questions about the problems I was having and recommended an appointment with Rich who works well with my type of pain/issues. I made the appointment. Came in this afternoon to the customary warm welcome, offer of a beverage, that sort of thing. They are SO nice here! I was taken back immediately and as I was reporting to Rich what my issues were he had me stand up straight and assess my problem areas while standing. Then we spent the entire 60 minutes working on my shoulders. I had mentioned in my previous review that massages tend to be painful for me. Yes, this was the case today but not nearly as bad as it's been in the past. Somehow Rich managed to work out the kinks without it being terribly uncomfortable. I actually found it relaxing! Major props for that. And he spoke quite a bit of the anatomy of my back and why things were happening the way they were. Very knowledgable! My sciatica nerve is pinched and it was becoming unbearable. I called just before closing on Tuesday and was able to get an after work appointment on Thursday-woohoo! The gentlemen who set up my appointment over the phone was friendly and was truly looking to find the best massage therapist to help with the nerve. I have been contemplating this review for almost two weeks. I would like to preface by saying the only reason I am leaving this review is so newbs like me will know what to expect, and how to have a more enjoyable massage experience. This was my first massage. I envisioned something totally relaxing and soothing. The desired result was to feel somewhat like jello at the end, and stress free, at least for a little while. I met with the therapist and told him it was my first massage. Then I mentioned I had a "kink" in my neck, and that was my only issue. The massage was really uncomfortable and did not feel good at all. It was very hard. I have a sensitive spot on my back that I asked him not to massage, and he started to twice after I asked him not to. When I emailed Joise (one of the owners) about it, she said that mentioning my neck took the therapist out of relaxation and into "neuro muscular" mode. I know I should have spoken up, but first I'm totally non-confrontational, and second, I kept wondering to myself if I had built up in my mind what a massage should be. After thinking about it and talking with Josie and other clients, I know it shouldn't be painful or uncomfortable. The atmosphere of the shop is very nice. I did appreciate the water afterwards. I was kind of grossed out by the face pillow. It had a previous client's hair and make up on it, and when I had to put my face in it, it skeeved me out. So, words of advice: Give balance a try. You can't beat their specials. When you go in, make sure you tell your therapist exactly what you want, and what you expect. read more

Hands down the best place ever to get a massage. Once you go here, other places just do not compare. The whole experience is seamless from the time you make the appointment, to checkout. I used to go here more often when I was working more and it threw me off one day when I walked in and the guy knew my name. I don't have anyone I see regularly. Each person has their own style so it kind of depends what you need worked on. The therapist usually has a tip or an exercise to leave you with after your massage while they hand you a cup of water, which I appreciate. There are usually 2 check in/out desks in operation so it's rare to have to wait. The waiting area is very comfortable too so I don't mind if I get there a little early. The workers talk in a low voice as to not disturb the people getting a massage. The massage rooms are very nice inside and I like when the tables are heated so it's not too cold. I usually don't do well with the face hole in the massage table, but the therapists always try to adjust it so my head isn't falling through. You can leave a tip on a credit card which is nice, and the happy hour specials are such a great deal. read more

I've been to Balance several times since and been very satisfied. This last time my body was cranky with me from time on crutches and limping around favoring one leg (after a nasty ankle sprain). I have to say that every therapist I've had here has been very good, but Bert's strong hands were especially appreciated today! After a couple weeks of my body feeling too wound up, I felt able to relax and still do as I down towns of water and try to stretch all day! My fella says I need to start pre-scheduling massages every so often, but that sounds a little indulgent. Just a word - Christin is fabulous. She's professional, funny, and as quiet or chatty as you like. But even more important - she's dang good at what she does. I went to see her recently for a prenatal massage. She focused on areas that were quite uncomfortable and took care of them, per my request. I received a gift card to Balance for a full body massage - my first! So not only am I basing this review on a one-time experience, but also my first real massage experience. It was everything I imagined it would be and more. I was scheduled with Ed, and though he was quite soft spoken (or maybe just being quiet) and a BIT hard to hear, I was able to give him a general idea of where my problem areas were and he ran with it. I have a hard time relaxing, but by the end of the 60 minutes I felt pretty rejuvenated (and MUCH less tense). After the massage he explained to me that I held tension in my neck, which I hadn't realized before, and gave me instructions for at-home stretches to help. Oh, and the man at the front desk was SO nice. I was a few minutes late (blame my lack of familiarity with the north side) but he helped me get checked in quickly so I could get as much time as possible on the table. Just had a 1 hour session with Joseph and it was amazing. He focused on the areas I said and checked in with me through out the massage. He also told me problems that are associated with the areas and why I might be in pain sometimes. It's really hard to find someone that understands disc degenerated disease and knows what type of pressure and massage works best. Joseph went above and beyond that. He knew exactly what would help and how to relieve my pain. He also helped fix a pinched nerve in my foot that was extremely painful. I feel bad since I promised Balance I would write a review ages ago, but I'm just now getting around to it. I heard about them through Yelp, and wanted to get several massages there before reviewing. I have to admit the only masseuse I've booked times with has been Nicole, who is out of this world. I am definitely a massage junkie and have had lots of deep tissue work done in the past by people who were more expensive and less intuitive about pressure. The first time I got a massage at Balance I let them know about my TMJ problems and how I must hold a lot of stress in my jaw. Nicole expertly massaged the temporal mandibular joint and released a lot of the tension. That is treatment I had never before experienced with a massage. I felt so much better after. When my back went out in August, Balance was the second place I called after frantically trying to book some physical therapy appointments. A massage with Nicole allowed my lower back to stop seizing long enough for me to get some rest and feel alive again. I recommend Balance above all other massage businesses in the area. It's located next to a great coffee shop, too, in a cozy area right off US 23. The owners always ask how I enjoyed my massage when I stumble from the room in a daze. You always receive a free bottle of water with encouragement to drink as much as you can to replenish yourself after a massage. I know that if I had any problems with my experience that the owners would genuinely care and offer up a solution; for people with tight budgets that need massage therapy this is an important factor. I admit that I have only ever gone during Happy Hour to receive 25% off services and luckily that's when my favorite masseuse is there, but Balance is an experience that I would definitely pay top dollar for. read more

My back has been doing unpleasant things this week...a misdiagnosed kidney stone, herniated disc, irritating husband were all contributing to my general misery. I got up today and decided that I needed to give Balance a try...thank goodness I did! Burt worked on me and listened to my general complaints and symptoms. I loooove massages. I love *great* massages. Nothing is worse than a bad massage. Balance is great because their business is focussed on doing one thing really well. They have a lot of rooms so it's easy to get a last minute appointment if you're in need. The rooms are very comfortable - not too hot/cold - and clean which is clearly important. I can't share who my favourite therapist is because it's irrelevant. You'll find who works for you. Just call and the reception staff can recommend an available therapist for you based on what you're looking for. What else is great? Free parking in a private lot, comfortable and quiet waiting area, discount for booking your next appointment at the time of your massage, "happy hour" pricing on Tuesday and Thursdays, discounts for military/veterans and occasional sales. I think part of that comes with the fact that I always go to David Paul. David is great at addressing all your knots and pain due to stress, tension....whatever it may be. After an hour with David, I feel like a new person ready to tackle the most life can throw at me. Also, the staff are really friendly and are always ready with a smile. Today I was overdue for a relaxation massage, so I immediately called Balance Massage Therapy as I have had such great experiences there before. I was paired with Chris and she was fabulous. I was experiencing some low back pain and she addressed it by focusing on it throughout the massage and with some gentle stretching at the end. She asked me to take some deep breathes periodically, checked the pressure of the massage, and was extremely soothing throughout the entire process. The rooms at Balance are large and designed to be quiet, the music is soothing (not annoying) and the front desk staff are charming and efficient. I had the good fortune to be stationed next to the Balance Massage booth at a trade show. After watching show attendees getting free massages all day, I was feeling inexplicably sore. Thank you Yelp for introducing me to Balance Massage! I got into a car accident 3 years ago which left me with chronic neuropathic pain on my left side and neck. WHen it rains.. it hurts so much. I'm no longer doing PT or seeing a chiropactor, but I do get massages. I've had alot of massages in the past and this has been one of the best massages i've had. I mainly see Wyatt. He has great technique. From day 1, right when i told him about my accident and just generally pointed where it hurt, he knew EXACTLY where to focus on. WIthout me telling him, he massaged the areas taht my physical rehab doctor used to point to as areas of problem. His technique is great. I always walk away feeling so much better. I just recently went to another place because there wasn't an opening and i came out feeling so bad. I need to make an appointment stat. The price is comparable to the others. $49 for your first and then $45 on tues/thurs 3-8PM. I usually go on fridays thought. You get a 10% discount for rescheduling. They offer a really great new client special and the same price at a certain time Tuesdays and Thursdays. I made the appointment on the same day. The receptionist was really friendly and informative. You have a private room to yourself with ambient music and a heated massage table. The masseuse was great. She worked on problem areas that I identified, found other areas of tension and checked in before trying to resolve them. Right after the massage and into the evening until sleep arrived, I felt like a warm, fuzzy puddle of cozy goo--it was as if I took some Valium but soooo much better. I was a knotted up mess of low energy upon arrival due to a busy month of work-related travel. Today, the day after my massage, I feel fantastic. My energy is back, my body doesn't feel broken anymore, and I'm happy. Christin treated trouble spots with perfect pressure and found areas I didn't realize needed treatment. I'm a small person who has experienced a bit too much pressure during a massage but not with Christin. She knew just how much to pressure to apply while dwelling long enough in a spot to get the muscle to give. Like Liz, I too have sensitive skin. The massage oil was really nice. Not too greasy and it absorbed nicely. The facilities are clean and they have the chill out vibe mastered. The location is bucolic. The building is surrounded by an old church, a general store, and what appears to be an old brick school house. (oh, and the front desk person was sweeter than sugar--mentioning this to address a prior bad review about their staff. Their cancellation policy seems pretty clear and fair to me. It's called opportunity cost--when you cancel they lose out on revenue from a time frame that could have been booked. I have no idea why that other yelper complained when she got a refund.) I've been going to Balance every 3 months for about four years now. Two years ago with Kim and Wyatt still working, I would've given this place 5 stars. These days there are a few good therapists left but incredibly hard to find. With the lack of good masseuses it's hard to keep coming back to Balance. For me I can't really find a good therapist because I like really deep work but I think most people like relaxation modalities so the remaining therapists would still be good for most people. A few other notes. The interior is really nice, clean and relaxing. I would definitely still give this place a try. They have good specials like their happy hour $45 pricing as well as customer appreciation day 2X a year where you can buy up to 6 massages at the $45 price. After my usual therapist absconded to another state, I've been bouncing around trying out different therapists, and decided to give this place a try, even though I need to drive. I randomly let them assign me to Jerry -- and I was okay with it, even though I generally prefer same sex therapists these days. The stars must've been aligned b/c I need look no further! The magic word here is listen! He actually listened to what I wanted. I wanted not quite a "fluff & buff" spa massage, but I really wasn't in the mood to be worked over -- even if my muscles say I needed it. (Thankyouverymuch last tryout). I'm sure Jerry will be able to lean into those pesky tied up muscles when I'm ready for it, but I needed to chill for an hour, and absolutely head to toe was a great massage. The proof was in the pudding as they say: That night, I slept like a baby. I also like that they have a number of what appears to be fully qualified therapists, in case Jerry goes missing. But after over three years of SEVERE debilitating pain, and just as many years of PT, acupuncture, athletic pain specialists, and various other modalities, I am at least 70% better! I call Chris a healer, because that's truly how it feels. She has brought the joy of living back into my life and I sleep much better as well. The rooms are always clean and comfortable and tastefully decorated. The office staff are amazing and helpful and the business is very customer oriented. This place was no less than a godsend for me. Balance Massage is only getting an "Meh" from me because, while the massage was good, I just cannot get over how mean the front desk person was when I had to call to cancel my last appointment. I had made an appointment a few weeks in advance and I was really looking forward to it but I woke up the morning of the appointment sicker then anything and I called them to cancel; I called so early they were not even open yet so I left a message on their machine to let them know I would not be in that day. They called me back around noon and just left a somewhat rude message asking about how I planned on paying them the $30.00 cancellation fee. I called them back just to reiterate that I was looking forward to coming in that day but I was ill and I gave them as much notice as I could but I would not have enjoyed the massage and did not feel I should come in. I don't normally cancel my appointments but it could not have been avoided. The person I was talking to was really unsympathetic and kept going on and on about the cancellation fee. She did end up agreeing to waive it but I just cannot get over the nasty experience. I'll just go back to my former place in Plymouth. They are more expensive, and further away, but also more professional and I guess this is a classic case of "you get what you pay for". Also, on a side note, the sheets on the tables are scratchy and the air in the rooms is too warm and stale. read more

Holy Crapamoly, I love this place! Actually, I love massage therapist Ally's amazing hands that have smoothed over the twisted knots in my back and kinks in my neck. I have been getting massages regularly for the past 5 years and can honestly vouch for this place. My recurring knots are like angel winged tumors in my shoulders, and there aren't many therapists who can actually get to these demons. My husband scheduled a massage for himself at this establishment. He had informed them of the surgery he had for stenosis in his cervical spine and some fusion last year and that he wanted them to stay away from this area. He is now having issues with his hips legs and knees as his nerves are healing. He specifically asked for these areas to be worked on. He got called in for work and I ended up taking his spot. The therapist, Debbie specialized in neck and shoulders... also did not have any of the information my husband had given over the phone. She seemed not very sure of herself. I am glad it was me and not my husband who received what I would call the worst massage of my life. Debbie said she turned on the heated table, she did not and half way through this agony I asked her to turn the heated table on. The music was also not on and at this point I just said start the massage. I am a certified massage therapist and teach embodied anatomy. I have no idea what she was doing during this massage.. There is a pretty consistent technique that most therapist follow and includes strokes that start at origin and go to insertion. She jumped all over the place in a confusing pattern that left me disconnected and frustrated. I asked her to especially work my legs. She did not seem to know where the hamstrings or quads begin She started just above my knee never going to the belly of the muscle and instead of using her forearm and palms she used her fingers when asked to go a bit more deeply . The most excruciating part for me was my neck and shoulders. I do not even think she knew where the actual muscles were located Her hands were so tense I thought she was going to strangle me. I found myself moving away from her touch and it took everything I could muster to not jump off the table and tell her to stop!!!!! I would not recommend this place to anyone after this experience. $135 later I was asked if I wanted to tip the massage therapist. From the front desk to the massage therapist it was a total failure. I have read good reviews of this place, it is a beautiful space The receptionist was warm and friendly... however I am extremely disappointed. read more

I was with Wyatt, he was very professional and definitely listened to the problems I was having and focused on those areas, which helped alot. I just had my first visit to BMT and I can't wait to go back! There's plenty of free parking (score!) and the reception area and staff are lovely. They seem to really focus on service: solid eye contact, calling you by name, etc... I enjoyed a 60 minute massage with Brian. After I got dressed, he spent a few minutes with me showing me a stretch I could/should do at home to prevent the tension I get in my shoulders/chest. The only thing that would make the experience better is if I could make reservations online. That said, I appreciate the "last minute appointment times available today" info they post each morning on their Facebook page--I look for them around 9:30/10:00 in the morning and called right away today to snatch one up. read more

The environment here was fair. Friendly desk people and clean. The masseuse, on the other hand, did not listen to anything I said that I needed. I believe his name was Ryan. I gave him specifics, to be fair. I said I would like a full body massage, PLEASE do not miss my front side (Pectorals, abdomen, psoas) He had no idea what he was doing & pressed pretty hard on my right ovary during the "psoas" work. I did not get a full body massage, not even close! He asked me for feedback at the end, so I said "Well, I asked for specifics and a full body massage. I don't think I got either one" He relied with " Well if I got to everything I would have to go as fast as a race car!" .... I love this place. I have a pretty screwed up back (skeletally) which I've learned to live with, and it's rare I can find anyone who can do any sort of semi-lasting help. I've tried a few places in Ann Arbor and some other places elsewhere where I've lived, and this place is solid. I overheard one of the office managers teaching a new receptionist the ropes, and turns out, they do "training" massages so that when a prospective client calls in and says "I like this not that" or various other things, the receptionist can say "I think that so-and-so will provide you the type of massage you're looking for" and/or explain the different techniques clearly. I'm pretty sure the only psuedo-bad reviews are from people who aren't taking full opportunity of asking questions. I've seen five different massage therapists they have on staff, and yes, I have my favorites now, but not once have I thought "well, that was a waste of money" and usually that's how I feel after I walk out of a massage. So, if you haven't been, I encourage you to call them up, explain all your aches and pains and what makes you uncomfortable/feel great and odds are, they'll be able to find you a person that works for you. And if it only kind of works, after the massage, I'm sure you could say "Well, I liked X's this, but not that - is there anyone who does a little more of A type of thing?" and they'll help you out. They have a ton of people on staff so there's probably someone for everyone. It's also pretty cool that the office staff really try to learn all of their clients' names - I walk in the door and someone I've never seen will say "Hi Alex!" Only word of caution I have - Plymouth Road heading east is a nightmare around 4:30-6, I sat at the Dixboro light for literally 10 minutes (yes, I timed it ;) ) the line of cars was so long. read more
