This was the best fish soup we had in Trondheim! We came here as our first meal in Norway and were very pleased. The location has several tables outside and across the street as well as several on the inside. The decor is interesting. Everything is ordered through an app and paid that way which made things very streamlined. Service is prompt but generally if we needed something it was some effort to flag down a server given how busy they were. Food-- The fish soup was delicious. Wonderful flavor, lots of different types of seafood (mussels, shrimp, fish). The reindeer stew was an experience. Stew was well done and topped with microgreens and lingonberries. A Trondheim native took me to this cute restaurant. I really enjoyed the open faced shrimp sandwich. It's shrimp on lettuce and butter toast. There is mayo on the side. It seems simple but it was delicious. I recommend the blueberry cheesecake for dessert. They also have a buffet for people who are more hungry. It has lots of authentic Norwegian food like herring. Came here specifically to try reindeer stew since it was close to where we were staying nearby. The inside feels really cozy, with decor all over the walls. (They also have a guestbook for you to sign!) Tried the reindeer stew, the salmon, and some apelkake. The reindeer stew had lots of flavors/herbs in it but was really good with the flatbread. I think in general, I'm not a fan of reindeer meat (too...game-y?) but the dish was really good. I thought the lunch portion was small when it came out but it definitely filled me up. The salmon in butter sauce with lemon is delicious. I'd get that again. The apple cake with ice cream was also really good; it was cake with bits of apples in it, closer to cake than apple pie and different from the first apelkake I tried. The lady who helped us was super friendly. They have menus in several different languages. I'd love to come back again one day to try other food here. read more

We stopped by after a nice long walk through the lovely streets of Trondheim. We were looking for a home cook inspired authentic kitchen! I was nervous while looking at the menu, as a large amount of it was fish - I am not big on fish. I heard a few others mention the Reindeer stew and figured it was worth the try so I ordered a nice large dinner helping. I was teleported into another world of stew at this point. I've had plenty of beef stew in my day, but never reindeer, and I couldn't be more thrilled to have tried it tonight. The reindeer itself had such a complex flavor and it was incredibly tender. The stew itself was also fantastic. So thick and flavorful! I highly recommend this to anyone in town! read more

Just no. I wish I could give this poor excuse of a restaurant a big, fat zero. I'm okay with the one star as it was cute and is in a great location. However, the food and service were awful. I had the risotto - okay, so my bad for getting Italian at a Norwegian restaurant - and my husband had the reindeer stew. The stew had a really good flavor. However, there was an odd, granular texture to the sauce. It kept getting thicker...not sure what thickening agent they used. Too much flour or cornstarch? Towards the end, it was more like thick pudding. The risotto was more like steamed or microwaved rice with frozen vegetables. There was no sauce, nor any type of seasoning. It was just simply bad. We kept trying to flag down staff - to get salt, more water, even the check. Each time, we had to go up to the counter...and each time, staff basically rolled their eyes. In fairness, it apparently was Greek week in town...maybe they were distracted by that? But then again, there was no excuse for that risotto. Avoid!!! read more

Came here on a recommendation, and of course how could I turn down an opportunity to have reindeer stew! This place is so welcoming. I'm not sure who's grandma that is, but she was friendly and fun, and made great recommendations on aquavits. Loved it all. We got the lunch special, which was the stew with a beer and a shot of aquavit, that she divided into two smaller shots we could try different things. I mean, talk about customer service. I asked her for something a bit stronger, you know, with a kick. She gave me this strange Norwegian wink, and it was on. I can't remember the name on the bottle, but it was black with two pink men embracing. Yea, that kind of day. apparently it's a Christmas special. I don't know what any of this means but it was delicious and went down so smooth. The stew was warm and hearty and had this really great brown sauce. Loved it. Since I knew I might never come back, I also tried the cheese cake with blueberries and the carrot cake. Now before you judge, realize that experiences like these are once in a life time! The blueberries added a bit of tartness to the cheesecake, but you really don't need them. The crust was perfect, and it would have been really good on its own too. If you're in the area, definitely make some time to go in. And when you're done and you're stuff, head down the street and walk up that huge incline street to a fort and an awesome bar at the top. Baklandet Skydsstation is a casual cheerful place, featuring rustic Norwegian fare. The fish stew is hearty and flavourful with a clear tomato based broth and loads of tender shrimp and fish.     Reindeer stew was served with garnish (berry sauce and sort of a mirepoix) to add into the bowl that went a long way towards cutting the gaminess. Good but too heavy to suit me.     Baked salmon was in an almost milky chowder, with not quite enough broth. The salmon was cooked thru so it was a bit dry, but along with the broth that was enriched with creme fraiche it was tasty. A big squeeze of the lemon wedge brightened up the flavours. A salt cod tomato stew was by all accounts good as well.     The blueberry cheese cake wasn't traditional, it was set with a bit of gelatin and more sour cream than cream cheese, but it was light and refreshing.     This is as much about the place as the food. Packed into a small old house, with service in every odd nook and cranny, and decorated as if a very cool granny had lived here and left all of her art and cottage furniture, needlepoint pillows and recipe box. Local beer was on tap and the beer drinkers were pretty excited about the Pilsner they were pouring. There are over 50 Aquavits to sample.  The place was packed with locals having a roaring good time, so don't count on quiet and romantic! Øvre Bakklandet 33. read more

In weekends they offer a buffet with a wide selection of herring which is really popular among locals and tourists. What a fun place that takes you back in time. The floors are uneven, the walls not straight, the tables too small and the chairs are wobbly. Could not be more ideal for a bacaloa or a reindeer stew. You get informed at the door after being given a menu to come to the bar to order and to pay. Perfect. Good thing we did it early because a group of 6 arrived right after us and we weren't moving (not a lot a space between tables which is key to the fantastic atmosphere) The reindeer stew is okay. Nice sweet touch in the sauce and the wild meat was very tender. I found it still needed some pepper to round out the flavours. The famous Jons Fish Soup was enjoyable but a bit thin on the flavour (seems it needed more time for the goodies to blend together and the broth was also a bit thin) The tiny portion of bread was okay but not overly generous; however it was wonderfully fresh. The side of tzatziki was nothing special (no real taste of garlic or cucumber) We enjoyed the experience. The food was 'nice' but nothing that has me thinking I have to go back again. The service was okay (not sure why the empty table got a candle and we didn't rate one :-( ) Have to say though a pretty impressive collection of Aquavit. I got to try reindeer for my very first time here. It was an interesting experience. I was really looking for some authentic Norwegian cuisine and this was the closest thing I felt like I could get. The ambience is very homely and it has limited space. I was able to get my coworkers to come with me to try the restaurant out for my second visit. I thoroughly enjoyed it. read more

Gotta say this is a big find in the universe. Populated evenly, both at noon and late in the evening. But chiefly a very fine place for slow roasting in the afternoon. This goes for most days of the week, making this a favourite for the stray pint. If a sunday has troubled one unduly (perhaps in-laws) this is a warm bosom. The beer is frosty and crisp, not suffering from the dancefloor sweat. Often smuggled inbetween old china ones glass is quickly emptied. It is also an appetizing environment. Count on getting hungry, and reflexively you can count on the Bruxelles with bacon. Some wheezing frequenteers or otherwise damp individuals, but a quick remark on the clientele: healthy. Skysstationen attracts an alluring and well rounded bouquet. Papis, friends, snugs, high flyers and aunties. Also the talkative owner (incomprihensible) and her troupe. read more

This place is a must do in Trondheim. The reindeer stew is excellent; As is the cheesecake. It is a unique experience due to the building and the many small rooms with tables. It feels like the living room of the neighborhood. I'll need to come back for the fish that I did not try. read more

Definitely worth a visit - good food and drinks (both alcohol and non-alcohol) and restaurant itself is very quaint. Except to pay Norway's typical high price for eating out but the food is very tasty and of high quality. We tried the deer stew (not gamey as one would expect), fish soup, and a couple of appetizers. They were all delicious. Tips: If you like their breads you can go to the source, Godt Brod (Thomas Angells gate 16); talking on cell phones are frowned upon inside the restaurant; also they have English menus. read more

This place gets a lot of hype because of National Geographic. It exudes cuteness in its decor and location in Bakklandet. However, the food is very average. They offer reindeer on the menu which certainly charms the pants off of tourists. There are however better eats in Trondheim. read more

Have been looking for authentic Norwegian cuisine for a long time and happen to find this hidden gem. Gotta say is my best find for my trip in Norway. Cosy little cafe with unique design features. You gotta try the reindeer stew here! It's awesome! read more
