Laromme is a Jewish bakery shop located in A'dam's Jewish epicentre Buitenveldert. Several…read moresupermarkets in that area sell a small selection of the bakery, but sadly not the croissant-like puff pastry which just so happens to be what I'm most interested in. Luckily, today I discovered where the mothership is located. Well, actually misfortune brought me there. After first being denied service at another Jewish shop (they much rather threw the pastry in the bin then serve it to this shiksa, seriously), I was "kindly" directed towards this bakery. Since they didn't seem to happy with my presence at Laromme either, I thought it was most advisable not to whip out my camera, so no pics. Anyways, Laromme has a wide variety of croissant-like filled puff pastries (both savory and sweet). The sweet are more croissant-like, the savory more puff pastry-like. Some of my favorite burekas: chocolate, cinnamon, poppy seed paste, potato, cheese & mushrooms. Didn't see any bagels, though I wasn't paying attention. My stomach doesn't discriminate, just wish they would do the same.

I have been tempted by the awesome smell and visually seduced by this patisserie twice so far…read more Firstly, they had a fabulous tarte citron which I highly recommend as delicious and this morning I saw they were open at 7am. I had a few minutes to dive in, salivate over the shiny sweet treats and spot my hamkaas croissant to go. They were very pleasant and friendly staff and heated my little breakfast in their big professional oven for me very quickly and it seemed quite grand when they pulled it out after heating. The ham cheese croissant was perfect. Quite big but not too big, a good balance of ham and cheese but not too greasy to eat on-the-go and I'm now feeling satisfied and ready for my day! I might just have to pop in on the way home to try some Dutch Passen treats....cultural orientation and all that.....hmmm but which one?!

I love how there are no extra preservatives, artificial preservatives or unhealthy bread that last an extensive time period on the shelf. You will find nothing but good wholesome bread and pastry that your parents or grandparents use to make back in the day. They sell nothing but quality in here. The customer service is excellent. So make sure to be very kind and pleasant to the employees, because they are simply wonderful. The prices are very reasonable and they always have some extra sweets worth dabbling in if you have a sweet tooth.
Great bread, great cocoa, great staff, great everything!…read more This was stop #1 in our "Hungry Birds" Food Tour (which you should absolutely check out at http://www.yelp.com/biz/hungry-birds-amsterdam). We had an assortment of traditional Dutch breakfast items (hot cocoa, bread, cheese, cookies, etc.) in the dining room, where we were told about the cool history of Hartog's. We then moved on to the bakery where we bought a loaf of whole wheat for a couple of dollars that we devoured in less than 2 days. We loved that this place took us slightly away from the touristy areas. Highly recommended if you want to see a more side of the City.

This review is going to be roughly the same as a review I wrote for another BBROOD…read more BBROOD ("brood", pronounced "brode", meaning "bread" in Dutch) is a chain of bakeries advertising that they only use sourdough in their breads which is great because this makes the use of raising agents redundant. In a review of Vlaamsch Broodhuys I stated: "... [sourdough bread is] the only "safe" bread i.e. there are no raising agents used in the process of making this bread. (raising agents prohibit the intake of most minerals because they form a membrane around them in your body and you flush them out of your system without absorbing them)". One of the minor symptoms of frequent consumption of regular bread is therefore fatigue. Moving on; Although the sourdough bread at Vlaamsch Broodhuys has a more authentic recipe, some of the sourdough breads at BBROOD taste much better and also considerably less sour (and thus appealing to more people perhaps). I particularly like "Spelt". A whole loaf costs €4 but in all fairness, it's roughly the same size of half a loaf of sourdough bread from Vlaamsch Broodhuys. I highly recommend you try the spelt bread! I'm hopelessly addicted to it and can even eat it without any toppings! It's that flavorful! Of course they also have croissants, cookies, tarts and more.
