I identified a risky tree on my property that needed to be removed because it was in great danger of falling on the house. After doing some web research, I hired an insured local tree service contractor with a good reputation and great reviews to do the job. Two hours into the job, the contractor informed me that he would be unable to proceed because he felt that the tree was too high-risk, and he feared that he might be killed if he continued the work; he explained that there would be no charge for the 2 hours of work he'd already done. He recommended another larger local tree service company, Baker Tree Service, to handle the dangerous job, telling me that Baker is extremely competent at handling removal of very high-risk trees. He also warned me that the tree was so dangerous that the job would definitely require the use of a very tall bucket lift or crane! After spending a couple of days doing due diligence on Baker Tree Service (recommended by the first contractor ), and discovering that they have an excellent reputation, & get excellent reviews on all review sites, and also learning that they are not only fully insured, but that the owner and several of the staffers, including the estimators, are certified MD Tree Experts, Certified Tree Service Professionals (CTSP), and ISA Certified Arborists, and that they have several skilled crews who regularly use bucket trucks, bucket lifts and cranes to remove trees, I contacted Baker to get an estimate on the job. The estimator showed up 20 minutes early (good sign!) for the appointment, was very professional and explained all options and potential hazards to me, and two days later, Baker Tree Services sent me the proposal in a PDF file document via email. Their proposal was very professional & competent, and the price was very fair, considering that the job would take over 8 hours for a 3-person crew using a 72' motorized mobile telescopic articulating boom lift (bucket lift) on caterpillar treads (my home is located on a rural forested mountainside, with a very long, steep and very narrow horseshoe-shaped driveway w/a hairpin turn, surrounded by rock walls). I OKed their proposal, and scheduled a date for the job. On the appointed day, their crew arrived 20 minutes prior to the scheduled time of 8 AM (this is always a good sign!) and started to unload the bucket lift from the truck trailer down on the roadway. The job went perfectly, and the crew was finished the very challenging job by ~4:30 PM, and headed back to their shop. Speaking/writing as a consulting scientist/engineer w/a strong engineering background (EE and ME) and a graduate degree in the sciences, and who, at one time many years ago, managed a large crew of heavy-equipment riggers & demolition experts (w/two cranes) which demolished old urban infrastructure, old factory/industrial buildings & old smokestacks/towers for clients, I can safely and confidently state the following: The crew from Baker Tree Services not only did an excellent job, and with great speed and efficiency, but they operated at every step of the job with great care, great precision, and great attention to safety. They are extremely competent craftspeople who are experts in their field. They each wore full safety gear throughout the entire span of the job, including hardhats, orange/yellow safety vests, boots, harnesses, and clothing/limb guards (remember: chainsaws!). The 72' articulating boom lift on caterpillar treads that they used to access the upper limbs of the tree was quite impressive, and the crew set it up quickly, and with great care. BTW, since I live on a forested mountainside (no lawns here!) in a rural mountainous area, I had specified to the estimator -- in order to keep the price low and reduce the crew workload -- that I did not want the brush/limbs from the top of the tree removed, nor did I want the trunk pieces removed, and that it was fine to leave all of these pieces in our forested mountainside yard. The crew carefully stacked all of the limb/brush debris in a designated area in our yard near the tree site, and cut all trunk pieces to ~18" in length for easy handling. I was quite impressed when, after all the work was done, the foreman grabbed a powerful leaf blower and blew all of the sawdust and small debris pieces off of our driveway, parking areas, paths, and my outer front porch -- a task which was hardly necessary, since I live in an old farmhouse on a forested mountainside lot filled with hundreds of tall trees -- but which was nonetheless very much appreciated! This was a very nice added touch! BTW, at the job's midway point, the owner of the company, Eric Baker, dropped by for 90+ minutes to supervise, to bring me up to date, and to chat. This was not necessary, since the crew was doing a great job already, but it was a very nice added touch! BTW, Eric, just like his crew, was very competent and very professional. My company needed a number of trees cut down and cut back to protect a guyed radio broadcasting tower on South Mountain. It was not an easy job as all the guy wires needed to be marked and protected during the entire process. Eric Baker and his team got the job done safely and efficiently.
