University Hotel at Sam Houston State University - Double bed room

University Hotel at Sam Houston State University

The University Hotel is located on campus, directly across from the Elliott T. Bowers Stadium. It…read moreis owned and operated by Sam Houston State University. It's unique in that half of the facility is traditional hotel rooms while the other half serves as offices for Criminal Justice faculty -- each floor seems to be split 50/50 (see floorplan photo). The rooms are laid out like traditional hotel rooms, with a large wall-to-wall window overlooking either the stadium or "courtyard", as well as large bathroom with walk-in shower. While the "decor" is modern, it definitely has an "institutional feel" to it, which makes me wonder if the building was formerly a dorm building that was converted into a hotel. For instance, the rooms have two closets and the toilet design is more like that you'd see in a public restroom than a hotel. The HVAC system doesn't seem to have a "heat" or "cool" function, just a weird knob on the wall where you can turn the fan off, high, low or medium. There is a separate thermostat that lets you choose a temp (and just a temp) but I'm not sure it really does anything, as the temp. coming out of the vents didn't seem to change no matter what I set it at. The beds were soft -- maybe too soft for me -- but OK and comfortable. Linens were clean and good quality. The nice big windows had sufficient coverage and black-out shades so I could make the room completely dark if I wanted to. The room was very very very clean. I pulled out the nightstand to plug in my phone and there was not any dust behind it!!. There were too spacious closets in the room, one of which contained extra pillows and linens, a workdesk and chair and a table with two chairs. The room had an oversized mini fridge, tv and microwave. Hot water was ample and quite hot. Water pressure was nice and strong. The only "dislike" was the choice of paint colors -- The walls and doors in the room are painted a flat "dirty mustard" yellow that kind of reminds me of a shade of yellow you'd see in 1970s era decor. Aside from that, the hotel is very quiet and clean. The rooms are well maintained and overall its a comfortable experience. I surmise most of the visitors to the hotel either are there on business (ie: training at the School of Criminal Justice) or parents visiting their kids who attend school there. Another thing to keep in mind, all the staff are students from the university. While they may not be as "professional" as you'd come across at a Hilton or La Quinta, they are extremely friendly and will gladly engage you about things to do on campus or around town.

To go visit your child and stay on campus to be near them and then end up sick as a dog. This place had mold in their windows, then when I called back and spoke to a manager named nick he said it was dirt. I would be embarrassed to even say that and to pass it off as if I am lying. Did you test that dirt and where are the pictures of the clean up then?? I will be taking this higher up because it's bs. As soon as we stepped in that room it was smelly. Then that night as we slept but couldn't sleep due noses feeling tingly and throats starting to hurt we knew something was wrong. Then to be dismissive about it on top of it all just got me.

Quality and cleanliness is not important to them apparently. I could see from the start that the hall and elevator had not been vacuumed, yet they claim to have stringent Covid 19 cleaning standards. The room was okay, but the furnishings are already showing wear. The toilet paper holder was missing from the bathroom and the vinyl tiles on the floor were starting to peel up. The AC used to be controlled from the wall but that no longer worked. Seems like it's controlled from the unit under the window now. Even though I set it to 65 it struggled to keep the humidity in check. I went for ice and found two of the floor's ice machines inoperative. There was a pile of trash in one of the ice machine rooms that stunk. No one is here to empty the trash. Breakfast is now pathetic. They only had light roast coffee and and it was lukeward and ran out. Could not find any kitchen staff. No hot items for breakfast, just some cereal, oatmeal, and a few pieces of bread for toast. This location is in dire need of new management.

The accommodation was very comfortable, nice and clean however when I went to closed the drapes, which were not a full set, did not move which really was not a problem but the room was right above the pool and there was a flood light that not only lit up the pool area but shone right into my room. I could have requested another room but I was too exhausted the two nights when I arrived each evening at my room and wasn't really annoyed, just wanted to sleep. I must say that the morning breakfast didn't disappoint, Hopefully on my next visit, the elevator will be in working order and I will get a decent accommodation.

Now when it comes to the room, the crevice attachment on their vacuum, really needs to be used. The main area of the carpet was relatively clean, but all around the edges was gross. My daughters were utilizing the bathroom to do their make up and hair, so I opted to go sit on the floor in the room in front of the long mirror. Let's just say I got a towel so I can sit on it versus straight on the floor. They also need to add real blackout curtains. There were outdoor lamps that were shining right through our room so we did not get the best sleep. They have these little faux blackout curtains on the side that you can't close. Would I stay here again? If I was in a pickle, yes. For $189 a night I expect check in with welcoming smile and cleanliness.
