This is my new favorite spot in Appomattox. Cozy leather couches, the smell of books and coffee, creaky hardwood stairs... SUCH an incredible atmosphere. I got the iced Campfire Cold Brew, which was delicious. The staff was friendly. And they have open mic on Thursday nights. I'm going back with my sister this week to check that out. The people are very nice, the service is OK, the food was well, for me anyway just below average. Not much to say, as there may be few choices in this small town, and the book store looks like the mail deal. The staff seemed very uninterested in the food or food choices. So, for a book and a drink this might be good, for entertainment - it looks like they have live music sometimes, it might be the place to be. For me I would make another choice. read more

Books and coffee are two of my favorite things so I love this bookstore coffee shop combo right from the start. My daughter and I had iced caramel lattes which went down really easy on this 96 degree day! The book selection was a quirky mix of new and used and my husband found an old edition of a childhood favorite. It looks like they had a little stage set up for musical performances, and the place had a nice local meeting place vibe. I definitely recommend stopping here if you visit the Appomattox site and go into the charming little town afterwards. read more

I Love this place. Today I brought my almost 14 month old in. they have a spot in the back she and walk/crawl around. They have books she can look at and I can read her. It's quite up front and I know sometimes she is not. So it's nice they have a spot and I come have coffee and let her get out. read more

Called and asked if a book was in inventory. Was told they don't have a list of what is in stock???? Asked about a couple of the menu items and was met with the same dumfounded responses. A hidden gem of Appomattox downtown area! Loved their ice chai tea and chicken pesto panini. My BF loved their apple pie and commented that "it was the closest to his mom's apple pie" so we ordered one the previous night and one to go the second morning! I hate to give this place less than 4 stars as everyone really seems to enjoy it. First of all, we came in on a Saturday afternoon and I would venture to say that might be one of the more popular times for eating. They were out of rice which 2 out of the 4 of us that went were trying to order wraps with rice. Not a huge deal but kind of odd. Then I ordered a Greek salad and upon mixing the dressing in, I found a pretty big piece of plastic bag in the salad. Not cool! I also tried to order an iced chai and they were out of chia. My husbands flat white was good. Maybe today was an off day? I'd probably go back for a pastry and coffee if I was in the area. Cute atmosphere and nice book selection. read more

Baines is just about the best thing in Appomattox as far as I'm concerned. I love going to browse books, and when I get the chance I go on weekend evenings to listen to great live music. They have yummy homemade food, great scones, delicious pies, awesome quiche, and let's not forget the delicious coffee in many varieties. I'd venture to say their concoctions are every bit as good if not better than Starbucks. I love that you can buy used books and when you're finished reading them, they give store credit towards future purchases when you return them. What could be better for an avid reader who doesn't want to hoard more books! I don't have anything bad to say about Baines. They are a friendly, family owned business that has wonderful customer service and great music, books and food. Try it, you'll love Baine's. read more

It's at least 40 miles from the nearest Starbucks. I have been passing by Appomattox limping from the Starbucks in Richmond to Starbucks in Lynchburg for over 10 years. Hallelujah I now have Appomattox to get my coffee fix. You are going to love this place. read more
