I recently had my right eye cataract surgery at Bailey Square Surgery Center and Dr Peter Wollan and the team at the Bailey Square Surgery Center were extraordinary from start to finish. I am enthusiastically looking forward to my left eye cataract surgery coming up soon and feel most confident that everything will go perfectly well this time around. The surgical center is awesome. No problems at all. But they have an outside source you talk to for receipts for service and other items. I called on wed got vm called again on thurs got vm again called again on Friday and she finally answered. I asked her to send the receipt and she said she just sent it. So I waited awhile and still didn't get it. I called back and she said it was sent but may take up to 24 hours to get. Well here we are Saturday afternoon and still haven't received. I had surgery at this center yesterday. This place is unprofessional, lacks empathy, is uninformed, and discharged me with post-procedure complications with no follow up. The issues stem from the anesthesiologists, surgery nurses, and recovery nurses, who leave me concerned for the integrity of my procedure and overall health. My actual surgeon is fantastic. It's unfortunate that his wealth of knowledge and experience risks being minimized by the others involved in this surgical center. Below are a few of the top issues I experienced at Bailey: 1. The surgery nurses did not put heart rate sensors on me prior to my procedure. When I was put onto the operating table, the anesthesiologist asked where they are. Several of them had to leave the OR to locate the sensors. Then when I went home I noticed they never took off the sensors either. I never met this anesthesiologist before. He never came to my room to meet me before or after. He only sent his female counterpart who I never saw in the actual OR unless she showed up after I was put under. 2. The anesthesiologist chunked an oxygen mask on top of my face and tried to balance it there while he was working on other things. It stayed that way for a while until a nurse fixed it and secured it to my head. I assume that was his way of telling her she's not doing her job. They both seemed stressed and disorganized. 3. Someone either ripped the surgical tape off my face after the procedure and burned off my skin, or I'm allergic to the tape. 4. My scalp itches so bad 1 day after surgery. I still don't know why. 5. I woke up in recovery slumped over in bed. It took two nurses a while to realize I was awake, as they were gossiping outside of my curtain about personal matters. When they acknowledged I was awake, they informed me my blood oxygen was at 70% and that they didn't know why. They said they need to speak with the anesthesiologist. Again the anesthesiologist that showed up was not the one in the actual OR. She also had no idea why my blood oxygen was so low. Was no one monitoring this during the procedure or right after? They had me start doing exercises in a breathing machine, and in between reps it would make me cough mucus. They were encouraging it saying it's helping. But later on my surgeon said I should've not had any mucus being expelled as part of this procedure. 6. I woke up with an awful headache, that they again don't know what it's from. The nurses told me to go to an urgent care to get a steroid shot in the base of my skull or see a neurologist. Why would I be discharged from a surgical facility to go to an urgent care facility for a headache that developed during my time at the surgery facility? Then they recommended I see my chiropractor if it's related to my neck. 7. The nurses told me they and my doctor had both called my ride home with updates. That was false. They never reached out to him, so I played intermediary while I'm also battling post-surgery complications. I get sent home with low oxygen and the headache. They said I reached 90% one time which is enough to be discharged. When I get home I'm in the 80s. I called Bailey Square 3 times to let them know it's still very low and to ask for advice. No one answered or ever called me back. Therefore I called my doctor's medical assistant for advice. She was quick to answer and follow up. 8. I think a lot of the above could be from an allergic reaction to the anesthesia, as there's the breathing problem, I'm very itchy, red bumps on my face, and awful headache. I've never experienced any of these things before in an outpatient procedure. 9. There was blood on my face when I got home. At least wipe it off after the surgery. 10. It's been over 24 hours since my procedure and no one has reached out to see how I'm doing. Their pamphlet even states this is something they do. All in all, a very sloppy experience that unfortunately puts a damper on my fantastic surgeon. I don't think there's anything wrong on his side. He just ended up with a crappy team that day. read more

First problem was at front desk where they charged more than was quoted, no explanation except quote was wrong. BUT THE WORST was when I was made to wait so long I nearly left. There was a nurse with a loud voice who gave me the "how would you like it if" routine. She goes in to tell doctor I'm ready to walk, comes out and says "Doctor says it's your choice, you have ___________." I have had the same experience as multiple reviewers here. GREAT facility staff - the kindest nurses and other staff. Extortionist billing procedures that will have me filing a complaint with appropriate authority over balance billing. They charged me upfront far more than needed to cover my 20%, but wouldn't perform the surgery if I didn't pay. No one at Bailey told me they would refund the difference once everything was paid by Aetna, and it was only a 3-way call between Aetna, myself and Bailey where I even discovered I was owed a significant refund from Bailey. They then took their sweet time sending it - I had to stay on them for it. Very nefarious billing practices. read more

I've had several surgeries here over the years, and they've always been great. Something has changed. Registration went fine, but when I got to the patient floor......it took 3 people almost an hour to start an IV. The same nurse did 3 pokes before she asked someone else to try. The only thing that made that bearable was using lidocaine. But most facilities I've been to have someone try once, and then get someone else. The anesthesia people were great, and my doc did a great job. After the recovery room and getting back to my room - a nurse asked about my pain level and I answered, and it took literally 45 minutes to get any pain medication!!! That is a heck of a long time for right out of surgery! Some of the nurses were kind, efficient and helpful- and too many were none of those things. read more

Wife and I had great internal experience with the staff at the surgery center who made this time as positive as possible fir my wife during m a D&C procedure due to an unexpected miscarriage. The sole reason for the 1 star review: after delving into this procedure independently during this horrible time, we wanted to ensure every reason possible of why it had happened would be determined. Looking into genetic testing, we stumbled upon the Anora genetic chromosome testing. This would tell us a precise reason as to "the why" whatever happened, actually happened. After clearing the test with our insurance provider, staff at the hospital, and her Obgyn doctor, we opted to utilize the test as our insurance was 100% going to cover the testing. Low and behold someone during the medical billing either within this office or the office of Dr. Gooch did not submit the pre authorization check box...(not sure which party is responsible as we have spent countless hours speaking to our insurance, the surgery center, the anora testing company, the doctors office and every party in-between and no one will own up to their mistake). After already paying a very sizable fee to have the procedure, we are now stuck with another $800+ bill, that if someone would have simply checked over before submitting, our insurance would have covered 100%! Totally unacceptable for such a simple thing to be overlooked and now we are stuck paying the consequences of someone's mistake. read more

I had surgery here with Dr. Wang on July 12. Big shout out to the OR nurses and the anesthesiologist who were with me that morning. They are so wonderful and caring and went above and beyond. So grateful to them. Needless to say, surgery went well. Post surgery I had to ignore Nurse Edgar's sarcastic remarks. He also put the nurse call button twice out of my reach and just handed me the two pages of discharge instructions instead of taking the time to go over it with me. Or at least the highlights. If I had needed to stay, I wouldn't trust him with any procedure but thankfully I was able to go. Since I was in a vulnerable position, I was forced to be polite. In any case, I won't let the attitude of one nurse spoil the entire experience. read more

I had minor outpatient surgery, and every single person who helped me was exceptionally kind, patient, and caring. I was nervous and so was my husband. Pre-op, Nicola explained everything in great detail, and when I had additional questions, the floating nurse answered them. Dr Eckart was my anesthesiologist, and he was efficient, but I mostly had Allyson, a nurse anesthetist, administer meds and stay with me post op. (Nicole was my OR nurse.) I woke up from anesthesia crying from pain, and the team immediately gave me extra pain meds and then two different anti-nausea meds. I felt very safe and cared for. My mom had a colonoscopy and complications after landing her in recovery for most of the day. Not only did the staff speak to her in a kind and caring manner, but they frequently checked in with me asking how I was doing. They communicated information well and frequently. Weird experience. People in the waiting area not wearing masks properly or at all. Clinical staff seemed very put out that I had a bad reaction to the anesthesia and couldn't be released when they thought I would be. It was hard to find anyone to help and I had three different nurses in three hours. They made up some story about me throwing up because I drank a bunch of water too quickly. I had been given about a quarter of a small paper cup and took one tiny sip. Super confused about what elicited such an annoyed reaction from all the staff on the floor. I just wanted to stop throwing up so I could go home. I think I put a kink in their workflow and the room was needed by someone else. It's all I can think of. Lots of noisy construction going on. We've had such a horrible experience at different hospitals with jaded, overloaded, overworked nurses that only help if you're pale from bleeding out or throwing up on them. It was almost difficult to believe the level of service we got at Bailey Square. The nurses were excellent and *shock* really cared about you. It was clean, and not being a hospital, you weren't subject to sick people, only folks having minor, mostly outpatient surgery. There was a dad that showed up before us trying to negotiate his bill at 6am. He should have tended to that well before showing up (she explained there are some credit options that needed to be initiated weeks before the surgery), but the check in lady was as sweet and helpful as she could be. Judging by experiences I've had and seen elsewhere, she could have sent him through hell, but chose not to. He was lucky. There is hope for the medical industry. read more

The nurses and doctors could not have made my experience with them any better. They were consummate professionals with great bedside manner; Registered Nurses, Linda T. and Linda C.. Anesthesiologists, Dr. J, and Dr. Steve and the rest of the exceptional staff (whose names escape me due to nerves and the wonderful elixir I was given)- My sincerest apologies. The staff at Bailey Square completely redeemed my opinion of the medical field. I appreciated that their nurses are very experienced and still believe in professionalism. Trust me... I've lost a lot of confidence in medical personnel over the years by one too many times, having to tear Nurse Millennial away from her FaceBook or iPhone long enough to get questions answered. It has left a very bitter aftertaste. Where is the professionalism anymore? I'll tell you... at Bailey Square. If you find yourself very needing to go there, know that you will be well taken care of. The low rating is based entirely on the staff at the front desk. We were told that it was okay to have 1 visitor accompany a patient. When we arrived, we were told that there are no guests allowed because of Covid-19. I replied, "oh, we were told that 1 visitor was allowed, but I can leave." The staff person's response was extremely rude. My partner is a native Spanish speaker, and they allowed me to assist with the forms, but when I asked whether or not we should put my name on the form as a visitor since I was leaving, we again received a rude response of "no, you're leaving." I am bilingual and a native English speaker and for some reason, the staff member made it a point of telling a colleague that I "spoke English good." It all was a very unpleasant way to be received when your loved one is on the way to have an operation. I cannot understand how a business decides to place someone with such poor customer service in a position where they are the first person someone interacts with at their company. read more

All medical care aspects were well handled, but the billing set up is deceptive. You are told that billing is by surgical procedure and is multiplicative (was just under $10,000 per procedure), but they make no effort to let you know the definition of surgical procedure is minute and what is clearly one surgery for you may actually be two, three, four or more surgical procedure each adding $10,000 to the bill. You could easily go in expecting a $10,000 billing (followed by all the random insurance aspects) and instead come out with a billing of $30,000 or more. I had laparoscopic surgery related to fertility issues. As well as removing some endometriosis, my doctor also had a concern about a small growth on the ovary so she biopsied that as well. It seems reasonable to me that the doctor bill for surgery would be higher since doing both would take more time and effort. I also think it would be reasonable to charge a bit more for the surgery center as the operating space is used for some (though minimal) additional time. I cannot fathom how that equates to doubling the bill for the surgery center when no additional prep/recover space, nursing staff, desk staff, or any other supporting elements are involved. The per procedure processing is effectively a billing scam that has become systematized so is magically okay despite being ridiculous. Bailey Square is likely no different than anywhere else in terms of how this is handled, but they, and others, should be required to make this clear from the beginning. Instead, they give an estimate for one procedure and then send a bill for 2x, 3x, 4x, etc that amount. I know the medical system in our country is all about the money and very little about patient care or support and that this is just an example, but something wrong being pervasive does not make it right, and Bailey Square should treat their patients/customers better. Before you go in for a surgery, ask for a list of possible procedures that could be performed and request a maximum cost estimate based on this. Bailey Square clearly does not want you to know how significantly the cost can multiply and will give the often false single procedure amount. It is really up to you to uncover the deception and get a true cost estimate. If only we could all focus on the surgery instead of billing inanity. read more

Just went in for a laparoscopy on Tuesday and everyone was extremely nice - funny too. Robyn called Monday to make sure I knew what to do, what to bring, make sure she answered any questions I had, etc. We were on the phone chatting for an extra 5 or 10 minutes. Check in was a breeze (!), no additional paper work, sign a few documents, give them the insurance card and drivers license, and write a check. That's it. The nurses were nice, nice, nice and attentive. I was never for want. Blankets, footies, meds - I asked for it, they provided it - before and after the surgery. The blankets come straight from a warmer so there's no waiting to get warm, it's immediate gratification. The anesthesiologist, Dr. Gaus (sp???), was thorough - even explaining why they delay giving any kind of "relaxant" until each area has completed their thorough review and questioning of a patient's medical history and procedure of the day. Dr. Cowan, well, he hung the moon any way, so he was great, as to be expected. My family had their own, private waiting room (where I was initially prepped) with a TV, a couple of chairs, and access to coffee. (The cable was out initially, but that was due to the weather - it came on eventually. They had a couple of channels nevertheless.) They followed up with a phone call on Wednesday to see if everything was ok. The only thing missing was the "Bair Paws/Huggy" gowns, which are warmer, longer, and provide more coverage. (I've had those at other facilities). Oh yeah, and anything you might find embarrassing - they do that once you're either too medicated to care or completely sedated (!) - which I appreciated! read more

If you are hoping for a lab with vaccinated staff, this is not the place to go. I was told that they don't have vaccinated staff there. It is incredibly disappointing to me that any medical facility would not be able to offer up just one vaccinated tech to do a lab draw. read more

*BEWARE* Abusive and retaliatory office staff that lacks integrity and knowledge. Medical/surgical staff was superb! Office staff committed an outrageous abuse of power meant to inflict pain and negative financial impact. The older office staff member and the supervisor were awful, unprofessional and abusive. I previously left a review after the absolutely worst medical office experience I've ever had. The office staff did not call or email with any information prior to the surgery, as I was informed they would. I called them to confirm all charges and procedures, and also confirmed charges with individual doctors AND verified all with the insurance company. I followed all instructions and arrived with my insurance card and ID. They had ALL of my insurance information wrong. They lied about calling me and telling me to bring payment. They demanded payment of their estimated amount of $1,000+ and became very abusive and loud. They demanded my son drive an hour roundtrip to "get your wallet and pay first." The surgical staff took me to surgery regardless, and it was great, with them. The office staff refused to let me leave without payment, so they wheeled me back upstairs to the office. I called my insurance company in front of the office staff to once again confirm the billing codes and the out-of-pocket charges - which were about HALF of what the office staff was demanding. The insurance company instructed me to wait for the claim and pay the bill. Meanwhile, the supervisor approached my son to tell him that I, "wasn't quite right mentally and emotionally due to the anesthesia." (I wasn't sedated and she knew that.) They filed the claim and I paid in full the day I received the claim decision. I STILL have not received a bill from them directly. ****After they were proven wrong and I posted my original review, they waited until right before my next procedure to CANCEL my next surgery. Now I will need to wait until next year for the procedure, which increased my out-of-pocket exponentially. read more

Never go here! They don't care about patient privacy. They'll treat you like cattle. Nurses rush you through like you're a number and nurses will come in and barely introduce themselves in the middle of your procedure. I imagine it must be a place where if you have no health insurance, you're forced to stomach. Fortunately, I have great health insurance I pay a premium for and I would never choose to go back here...even it it means switching doctors! The center is fine and the staff is great. But...watch out for the billing department. I had a procedure done and they did what is called balance billing. When they are contracted with your insurance THEY CAN'T DO THAT. So I paid what the difference between what the insurance company negotiated and what they wanted to charge an additional $935. All I can say is that they now have a fight on their hands! It is against the contract they signed with the insurance. They are possibly in breach of contract. read more

I had a colonoscopy a this center. I am 64 and procrastinated for years. I've never had any kind of surgery. They made the experience easy and actually pleasant. All the nurses are very good at making it painless. You can even choose the music you want in the operating room. Dr. Mangione is a real master at this procedure. DO NOT GO HERE UNLESS YOU CAN PAY YOUR ENTIRE BILL UP FRONT. This 1 star is simply for the billing department, which, as other people have noted, is basically pure evil. They will not talk to you about working out a payment plan, but rather, wait until you show up the day of the surgery, and demand you pay the entire bill up front, before they're filed with insurance or any service has even been rendered. They will try threatening you that they will not perform the surgery unless you pay right then and there. They flat out told me at our 6 am appointment that this surgery "wasn't an emergency" and that they "weren't an ER" so they did not have any obligation to perform surgery on my son or give us the option for a payment plan. I had a bill that was over $2000 for my son's hearing/ear surgery and we had to sit around the waiting room for almost two hours waiting to get "approval" to pay via payment plan. Even then the most they would work out with us was a 6 month payment plan. This was in STARK contrast to the billing department at Dell Children's, which let us set up a payment plan after the surgery had been performed and insurance had been billed, set up for 3 years (which we paid off early), and were super friendly/understanding of our budget. In addition to this, while my son was under anesthesia for getting an ear tube replaced, the doctor went ahead and performed ANOTHER surgery on his ears (that we did not approve.) Bailey Square then tried to bill us for that additional surgery, and when we explained that we were trying to go through insurance to get that cost removed, since we never approved it, they informed us that if insurance refused to pay, that they intended to come after us for the ENTIRE $14,000 BILL that would have been paid by insurance. I really felt like getting legal counsel involved in this and am still thinking about it, as this was just so shocking and absurd. PLEASE go to Dell Children's or find another surgery center. Even if you have the money to pay your bill up front, this is not a business that I feel like we should be supporting. They are manipulative and unethical in more ways than I care to list in this yelp review. Our surgery was about a 30 minute procedure and they charged $14,000 to insurance, which is about 10x the amount that the actual surgeon and anesthesiologist get paid. Yet both our doctor at ARC and Austin Anesthesia were able to work out payment plans, send us our bill after the procedure, and perform like a normal, ethical businesses. read more

I called 3x's to try to get an explanation to this bill and no one ever called me back, it's terrible service and I will not recommend now will I ever go back to have surgery and I will tell my doctor next time do not send me there. Two stars due to their hound dog billing department. I pay a small fortune as it is for health insurance and handed over a hefty out of pocket sum the day of surgery. Sure enough our inept US health insurance didn't cover some other expense, written in indecipherable code on my bill, so I needed to fork over even more cash post surgery. Before I shelled out more of my hard earned money I wanted to verify with my insurance why they didn't cover the additional cost. Meanwhile Bailey Square harassed me to collect their balance. They sent letters weekly, texts, calls-even AFTER I paid the balance and it cleared my account! The whole procedure was physically, financially and emotionally draining. Now I wished I had used up my entire measly 23 hours allotted there instead of bucking up and heading home 5 hours after surgery. I know they are also forced to deal with the nightmare that is our healthcare system, but what floored me is that they left a message a few days ago and offered a 20% discount if I paid my balance in full over the phone. Today they called again and threatened to send me to collections!?!?!?!?! Mind you, this was after I had already paid my balance in full. So now I realize it pays to be delinquent because the 20% discount would've been nice but I'm wondering what sort of shenanigans these people are pulling. Patient beware! read more

I had a minor procedure done at the surgery center in December 2009. The surgeon and anesthesia staff were quite friendly and knowledgeable. The main problem I had with this facility is that of a fiduciary concern. I am a student; and student insurance is often poor. When I planned for the procedure I was told prior to having it done that the cost of the procedure would be $900. I paid $400 the day of the surgery and gave the hospital permission to take out the remaining $500 from my checking account the next month. Two months later I received a call from the billing department informing me that I owed an additional $1600. Apparently the procedure was underestimated. That fact I am a student with no income didn't seem to matter to them and their carelessness has created an unexpected financial burden for me. I never even received a bill in the mail for the extra costs and after the initial phone conversation about my inability to pay the adjusted amount, I found they referred my account to a collection agency. I received no offer to pay over time. Beware of this company and their underestimation of cost. read more

Beware of Bailey Square Surgery Center. I received a call from their billing department, two days before my daughter's scheduled ear surgery, telling me I need to put $2000 (amount not covered by insurance) down up front or they would cancel the surgery. Once I made the $2000 payment, they let me know they needed my credit card information and authorization to charge the card every month for 5 months the balance of whatever the surgery would cost, or they would cancel the surgery. I'm extremely anxious about going forward with the surgery at this point because they can come back with whatever amount they please after the surgery and charge it on my card, and I will not be able to dispute it as I have already authorized the payments off my credit card. Highly unethical and greedy. Stay away from this place. read more

Facility and staff are nice. My issue with this surgery center is the billing. When I had to have an emergency surgery performed they told me the day of the surgery I had to pay for everything upfront or I couldn't have my procedure done. Where as before they said I could go on a payment plan. Thankfully I had an emergency savings fund started. After surgery though I was getting billed and receiving phone calls saying I owed more money. Not sure how I could owe more money if I had to pay for everything upfront, so I contacted my insurance company and my doctor. I was advised not to pay anything until they can figure out why I owed money. My doctors office ended up owing me money but for what ever reason I have to request a refund from them and they only do refunds once a month and I apparently missed it for that month by an hour. They told me I will be getting my refund next month. I contacted Bailey Square and told them once I get this refund from the doctor I'll pay y'all, even though I had to pay my entire portion upfront. Anyways, I get a letter from Bailey Square saying if I don't pay the amount they're turning me into collections!! So I go to the website it says to pay too and it pops up as an invalid address. I call and the lady is basically whispering to me. I can barely hear her! She asks for my account #, I give it to her and then she says she needs to ask me a few questions before she can get my payment info. I say ok and then there's total silence. ... . I say hello and she says I'm still here I just need your payment info. .. there were no other questions... I give it to her and I tell her that the website doesn't work. She says I know, we switched, have a good day. And hangs up. Ummmm if you ever want to get an uneasy feeling in your stomach, pay money to someone that you dont believe you owe anything too and then have them cut the conversation off real quick. read more

I had a great experience here. All the nurses and staff were wonderful. I had to stay overnight and was the only overnight patient and felt as good as possible for my first overnight hospital experience. The nurses are so friendly and compassionate, they made my experience great. read more
