I usually spend quite a bit of time shopping for new frames, and in particular, I insist on frames that are not branded by some designer. That is basically the whole collection at Eyecare Plus. No silly designer brands. Just really high-quality, fashionable frames. It's getting harder and harder to find frames that aren't made in China these days, and the quality of European workmanship is really superior. Important if you expect your frames to last more than a year. I ended up choosing a cool pair of German-made ic! frames, and I've been getting compliments on them ever since, as they are very distinctive. The service is great. Unobtrusive if you're just looking-- and everything is available to try, you don't have to ask to get into locked cabinets. I went in once just to look, and came back again when I was ready to choose. When I was ready to narrow down my choices, the staff were actually helpful and gave me honest opinions about the ones I was trying. They didn't just tell me I looked great in everything. In fact, the salesperson (I think his name is Mike) recommended a different pair by the same manufacturer, and it turned out he was right-- they did suit me better. He was very critical about getting the right fit, making sure the frames sat across my nose at the right level and the way they wrapped behind my ears (I have a small head). He rejected a couple pairs which he said didn't fit me properly, and I appreciated that he took my choice so seriously and wanted me to have the right fit. Very professional. This seems like a small, independently run franchise. The optometrist, Chris Burgess, was very thorough and pleasant. All around nice people to do business with.

Despite living in Melbourne, I now have my annual eye check at Eyecare Kids during my annual visit to Sydney. Further details: The owner of Eyecare Kids, SooJin Nam, is an exceptional optometrist who is friendly, expertly skilled, provides a thorough examination and clearly explains the outcome. During a conversation with her, she noticed a problem with my right eye that I was totally unaware of. She suspected that I had a rare defect and her subsequent thorough eye examination confirmed her suspicion. She then referred me to a specialist neuro-optometrist to identify whether, as she suspected, that I was born with the defect and therefore needed no further treatment or whether the defect had developed recently, which would need specialist treatment. SooJin also provided advice of the highest quality on how to minimise deterioration of my existing macula degeneration problem and of the best multifocal lenses for my eyes. Over forty years of visits to optometrists, none have ever detected the rare defect in my right eye. Similarly, none have ever provided the high quality macula degeneration advice that I received from SooJin Nam. In addition, none have explained the differences in performance for the range of multifocal lenses available. I have seen how well SooJin interacts with children and I am sure that her other optometrists have been appointed because they provide the same high quality service that she provides and sets for her clinics. I highly recommend Eyecare Kids for optometry services and advice to both adults and children.

This is where I've bought my last two digital cameras from…read more The first one, when I was 16.. and it served me extremely well up until 3 weeks ago (ie; 6 years of perfect functionality, probably more if I hadn't messed up the lens. it was a Canon, if you're interested). The other week, I bought a red Lumix (Panasonic), and it seems to be in top condition. More than the quality of their cameras, it's the friendliness of the staff that impresses me. They are quite frank and upfront, and almost apologetic about their sometimes ridiculous prices. For instance, I had wanted to get my previous camera fixed, and was told apologetically that it would cost me up to $250, and that it would probably be cheaper to buy a new camera altogether. Which I promptly did!

I walked in carrying $2500 worth of camera and lens around my neck looking for a tripod. One assistant tried to sell me the cheapest unit even when I insisted that I wanted a sturdy carbon fibre tripod & ballhead. She wanted to help, but didn't ask about my needs and budget, or know much about the products they sell. The store 'expert' stood aloof and only gave monosyllabic answers when the lady chased him down to relay my questions. Perhaps they made a lot of assumptions about me - I don't know - but if they had only bothered to speak to me and helped me they would have soon figured out that was ready spend $6-700 and very likely to have come back as a loyal customer. The Paxtons nearby was more helpful, knew my gear and their products, but didn't have the range to show me. I'm off to the web to buy.

Anyway the shop window of Perfect Vision Optical has skulls wearing their stylish glasses range, I was drawn to the window not by the skulls but by a pair of cloudy clear framed sunglasses. I love sunglasses and I particularly like clear plastic frames, I must not buy these as I already have three pairs of sunglasses with clear frames and do not need more. If I ever needed glasses though Perfect Vision Optical would certainly be a considered shopping destination. They have an excellent designer selection, including Tom Ford (I want Tom Ford sunglasses, I want them now), Vera Wang (I didn't even know she made sunglasses), Ed Hardy (someone bring me a bucket) and amongst others a seriously cool brand I was unfamiliar with called LA Eyeworks. They also offer Laser Surgery services, but why bother when you can get such awesome glasses. really need to start staining my eyes.
