Looking for a lunch spot and remembered Bahn Thai was recommended to me a while ago, so we decided to check it out. Parking in the area can be a challenge but luckily we found a spot around the corner. The inside is just for ordering with a few tables outside under some umbrellas. As soon as we entered we were politly welcomed and attended right away. I got the Pad Thai with chicken and my girlfriend got the firecracker chicken with brown right. Both were ordered "hot" on the spicy level but it wasn't as spicy as we thought. Anyways, the food was amazing! Everything was so flavorful, best Pad Thai I have ever had. I almost forgot we also got a Thai tea and sticky mango rice. Needless to say we will return soon!
I've been coming here for several years, and as a vegetarian, the yellow curry with soft tofu is always my go-to. I've also tried the drunken noodles, which are really good as well. The taste and quality have been consistently great over the years. It's a very small spot with no indoor seating, just a few outdoor tables that tend to fill up quickly during peak hours, so ordering to-go is probably the easiest option when it's busy. That said, it would be nice if they offered dine-in plates and cutlery for customers eating there.
Came back after a couple years and it seemed the food lost its sparkle. The curry was very milky and didn't have a lot of taste. Not a lot of veggies in the yellow curry. I also felt the rice tasted stale. The chicken satay was good, but the cost has gone up and quality maybe started to go down. Service was friendly.
Yes yes and more yes! I enjoyed the entire experience at Bahn Thai. The patio seating is pretty cool. Each area gives you a different experience. I enjoyed ordering at the table and being served with to go bags/containers. We had the drunken noodles with shrimp, Thai fried rice with eggplant, fried tofu, and the papaya salad! My favorite thing of all was the Thai iced tea! Woooooooah was it delicious!
Ordered take out and so glad we did this food was delicious! The tofu was crispy and came with plenty of dipping sauce. The chicken wings were saucy and cooked perfectly. The crab rangoon was so plump and full of a delicious cream cheese mixture, my favorite item! The spring rolls were a perfect mixture, not too thick, lots of dipping sauce. The drunken noodles were so good and filling. Food was delivered on time and tasted phenomenal. Would order again.
One of the best Thai food spots in the University Heights area!! The thai iced tea will have you levitating. Cues Dua Lipa ‼ The food was so flavorful and filling. Big portions here so keep that in mind if you don't like leftovers. We are foodies that don't throw away food. Give it to your mother or brother or sister or friend. You feel me. My hubby enjoyed the Pad Thai and Sweet Chili Wings. The ingredients, spices, and veggies took the Pad Thai to the next level. I ordered the Pad See Ew and tried a Sweet Chili Wing. Perfection. I ordered the medium spicy level and that was more than enough. There are spicier levels so do you! The only reason why I did not rate five stars was that it took almost an hour for our food to be ready. Very busy for a Monday night! Regardless I highly recommend!!
New favorite Thai takeout in San Diego! Decided to change things up and try Bahn Thai for takeout and I'm so glad I did! First, the Thai fried rice has a depth of umami flavor I wasn't expecting from a fried rice, truly delicious. The Bangkok stir fry was perfectly balanced with a slightly sweet, spicy sauce, fresh veggies and chicken. Bahn Thai Yelp search results showed Bahn Thai as the most reviewed thai restaurant in San Diego, so I had to find out... From their Yelp page, I already knew what to kind of expect: No indoor seating, No ceramic plates, No Silverware...all of which are almost dead breakers for Me so I ordered everything willing to try dining in the outdoor patio. While waiting, the flies outside was too disturbing and turned me off, so I immediately instructed the staffer to change my order TOGO, my potential dining vibe and ambiance were affected :( Service from the cashier and attitude from the cooking staff was cordial, helpful and nice. They understood my preference to eat with silverware, proper plates and no flies bothering me. They packaged the food order meticulously. I am aware their Hillcrest location which will have full service with all the dining accoutrements I prefer will open early 2026. When I got home, I plated every dish and enjoyed it All. The pad thai was delish. The curry had perfect viscosity: not too heavy thick and not too watery runny. The veggie egg rolls were scrumptious. I agree with many Yelpers, the food here at Bahn Thai is among the best and I look forward to visiting and dining when the Hillcrest location opens. Recommend.
The Pad Thai is the perfect mix of sweet and spice!! It was freshly made and the Pad See Ew was full of chicken and a the perfect mix of noodles and veggies. I got the hot spice level and when I tell you it was making me sweat! But I love spice so would definitely recommend if you can handle the kick. Had to finish off with the mango sticky rice that is well portioned. The mango was so sweet and tender and the rice the perfect texture. I love the service and how nice the workers are. It can get packed but they work fast! Will be going back :)
This place was so good that my bf & I had to come back! And we love a spot that has vegetarian options with fake (mock) chicken/duck and tofu, veggies. First time I got the yellow curry at a level 5 (out of 5) spice with mock duck. And it was phenomenal! Very flavorful stuff!! For people who like spice but don't have a high tolerance, please do a 3. Everyone else, 1-2. Also got drunken noodles. Also bomb! The next time I tried the pineapple fried rice with mock duck and pro tip! Get the side of curry sauce (any flavor; I did yellow) and pour it over. It's so bomb! If I had to do it again, I would ask to add potatoes and bell peppers to the fried rice and then get two sides of curry sauce. BF had the firecracker chicken and it's good but we both agree that the curries here are the way to go with any protein preference. Ended with mango sticky rice that I wish did have more cream over it but that's just cuz I'm a saucy gal. Still delicious and very filling. Good portion size. This isn't a formal restaurant. More of a grab-n-go spot. There is very limited seating outside if you are trying to dine right outside (5 tables) and no indoor seating. It's fairy quick to get your food. You walk in, order, and wait for them to call your name.

The meat wasn't dry, and the peanut sauce it came with was a nice addition. Pad See Ew (3.5/5) - Definitely not the best pad see ew I've ever had. The taste was sweeter than most. The flavors were still great, but I also wish the noodles were a bit more caramelized/charred. I didn't mind that they used regular broccoli, but I thought that was interesting to point out. The beef that accompanied it was tender and not tough. I had to order my food mild since my friend can't handle spice, so I really did appreciate that they provided chili oil and other flavor enhancers on the side. SERVICE: Your food is definitely cooked to order. They're very nice, attentive, and accommodating. Overall, fast and friendly. TLDR// San Diego Thai gem that lives up to its hype. I can't say it was the best Thai food I've ever had, but I would definitely be back sometime in the future when I have a craving and am willing to fight for street parking.
Oh my is Bahn Thai delicious! I ordered Pad See Ew with mock duck. I was so excited to see mock duck as a protein option. It was all perfect especially the noodles, though I wish I had eaten a little less because I also ordered the mango sticky rice and it was up there in tasty things I've eaten recently. I had to give up 1/3 of the way through but I'm confident it's going to make an amazing breakfast. (I'm on vacation--there are no rules).
I have been a loyal customer of Bahn Thai for over 10 years, which makes this review especially disappointing to write. Bahn Thai has always been one of my favorite go-to Thai restaurants because the food was consistently delicious, fresh, and satisfying. Unfortunately, over my last several visits, I have noticed a decline in both quality and consistency. The vegetable portions have become very inconsistent and skimpy, and the rice texture varies from visit to visit. Because of this, I decided to order sticky rice with my garlic stir-fry, hoping for a better experience. Sadly, both of my garlic chicken plates came with barely any vegetables at all and one of the sticky rice was dry and old. What saddens me most is that this Thai restaurant has been a favorite of mine for so many years. I have always enjoyed recommending it to friends and family, but my recent experiences have left me disappointed. Sadly, Bahn Thai has lost a regular customer who would often spend up to $350 in a week. I hope management takes customer feedback seriously and works to restore the quality, consistency, and generous portions that made Bahn Thai such a great place to eat for so many years.
ORDER INSIDE FIRST! Then find a table and sit -they'll bring your food. If ordering take-out, everyone waits along the sidewalk for them to bring out/call your number. All information is clearly marked on the receipt, large numbers on top with estimated time below for order to be ready. Super small restaurant with only limited outdoor seating. They're planning to move a few doors down, into a larger location, within a few months. Food is tasty, good portion size, and service is limited but friendly and patient. Pineapple fried rice with chicken, and chicken satay, were both perfect. Fried chicken wings are good but not something I'd have again, even though I love fried chicken and chicken wings, just prefer somewhere tspecializes in them. Hole in the wall Bahn Thai is serving carryout with limited outdoor only seating. SERVICE Patrons order and pick up at the counter. My order of the sweet chili wings was estimated to take 25 minutes to prepare and came with the sauce separate as requested. FOOD 2/5 sweet chili wings: actually wings and drumsticks and had a tougher texture that did not taste freshly fried, which was disappointing given the $15 price point for 7 wings. Pretty affordable (under $20) and quick service. We went at the perfect time because there was outside seating available. I think this is a perfect spot to eat casual Thai food since they already pack it in a Togo container as well. The pad Thai was decent. I got medium spice and it wasn't spicy at all, and I have a 5/10 max spice tolerance. Luckily I was able to get chili oil inside to add to it. My partner got the Bangkok chicken and that was very good! I think this place shines in their rice/chicken dishes over their noodle dishes. Overall, it was a good experience, and I'd go back to try their extensive menu again. read more

Stopped here to pick up lunch. The food was ready promptly and the service to check out was quick and easy. I love that they give you extra chili oil sauce to add a bit of spicy-ness to whatever you ordered! You can't go wrong with their pad see ew with beef! Although it says Chinese broccoli, they use regular broccoli. The beef is not chewy and very flavorful. For an appetizer I tried the chicken satay skewers for the first time and they carry a lot of flavor. Good portion size as well if you're looking to add more protein to your meal. Can't go without ordering the mango sticky rice. I'd ask for extra coconut sauce, but a light and refreshing dessert! read more

I was searching around for the best Thai in SD and stumbled upon this place. We came during dinner rush and had waitlisted prior and our table was ready when we got there. We ordered the boat noodles, pad see eww, red curry (since they didn't have green curry), and the pork belly. The pad see eww was good, it was a big portion and same with the red curry. The boat noodle was a little different/weird. The broth had a particular aftertaste that I wasn't used to. It also came in a pretty small bowl from what I expected, I wouldn't order that again. Service was decent and food came out fairly quick. I like how they have a variety of options to choose from! read more
One of my favorite Thai Restaurants of all time. Everything I've tried here is delicious and well seasoned! I always call ahead of time to place an order for pickup- the wait is generally 30-45 min. When picking up, the staff is kind and it's a quick process. The building itself is small so there's no sitting area. This time I tried their Choo Chee Fish dish (fried fish in Red Curry sauce) for the first time. It's delicious! Especially the Red Curry sauce. My go to is usually a Red and/or Green Curry. Their Eggplant Basil is also so good! Their Thai Tea is also something good to try- this is too sweet, but it's a good treat! Honestly, everything here is good. Today I went to Bahn Thai with a friend after going to the Museum of Us in Balboa Park, just a quick 10 min drive away. Parking was plentiful on the street, but might get crowded on weekends. The restaurant is small, but well-organized. There is no indoor seating, but there are a few tables on the sidewalk. This is a very casual, primarily takeout restaurant. I ordered the yellow curry with chicken and my friend ordered the lemongrass chicken. Both were fantastic! The yellow curry was so flavorful, the chicken was cooked thoroughly, and the veggies were fresh and delicious. We both ordered spice level medium, and it definitely had the perfect amount of kick to it. Everything is served in takeout containers which is convenient for taking leftovers home, and adds to the low-key, chill vibe. Service was fast and friendly. No concerns there. I definitely recommend this spot for excellent casual Thai food when you are in the University Heights area. I will return for sure. read more

Still the best Thai in SD. No more seats inside (thought it was only ever like 2 small tables) and there are only 4 cashiers when you walk in. Few seats in the sidewalk in front. Food is great, spicy levels accurate- their THAI-ger sauce is great (buy some to go). Our only orders are: Pad Thai with chicken, pad see ew with beef and panang curry with shrimp. Nice employees. Wait time is always long for pickup orders, 40 mins all the times we order, so just order ahead of time. read more

I've still been having Bahn Thai regularly and it's one of my favorites. I love the pineapple fried rice. I tried the Massaman curry recently and it was really good. I sometimes feel as though the noodle dishes can be a bit hit-or-miss depending on how busy they are when you order. This time we had a 40-45 min wait for food and the pad Thai felt a little overcooked and way too sweet tonight. Still a 4.5/5 place overall for me. read more
This is one of my favorite places for Thai food. My go to dish is the yum neua spice level 1. I like to eat it with a side of rice. I love all the flavor that comes packed into this salad but the portion size can be a hit or miss when ordering it as take out. I would recommend calling in advance and then picking up your order. The restaurant is pretty small so there isn't a lot of waiting space. Parking can be rough but it is worth it! read more
We get takeout frequently here for family gatherings, the food has always been exceptional, The noodles and curries are excellent, the shrimp has always been perfectly cooked. Love the duck curries here! The desserts are delicious as well. read more

Came at around 2pm on a friday and it was still relatively busy! Luckily there was a seat available but there's only like 5 tables. I would grab food and take it to the park nearby! The service was very friendly and easy, ambiance was very independent and calm. I got a shrimp pad see ew in a medium spice level, it took about 20 minutes. The noodles were an incredible consistency, I can tell they use good quality noodles. The sauce itself leaned more sweet than savory which I didn't expect from Pad See Ew. I prefer my Pad See Ew to be more salty and savory instead of sweet which is why I gave it 4 stars. read more
