Casa de los Sueños (House of Dreams): Must book if you are looking for a reasonable boutique hotel!…read moreIt is located next to a private residence and also the 5-star Impressions Hotel (Hyatt). Once you stay here, you have options to rent bicycles (complimentary) and golf carts from here. I highly recommend getting one of the golf carts from here, as they book out fast. Otherwise, you will have to go downtown to rent them for an hourly rate or daily fee. The hotel has a relationship with Kin Ha beachfront restaurant, which is below the hotel. It is not connected, so you must travel down the stairs and cross the side road to enter the Kin Ha beachfront restaurant for complimentary breakfast (any entree with one simple coffee or juice). You can also lay out at their beach club, which has complimentary kayaking, snorkeling, and paddleboarding (tipping recommended). The rooms are grand and colorful. The pool and ocean views are amazing. There are 13 rooms in this boutique hotel. I was advised that the best rooms here are Grace, Love, and Serenity. You must notify the front desk if you want your room cleaned. Otherwise, you can request items/amenities (even a beach towel) from the front desk. Some other things to note here are the laundry room and jewelry/hat store. The options are a bit limited compared to downtown. Why Casa de los Sueños? This isn't just a place to sleep--it's an integral part of the island (Isla Mujeres) experience. There is someone always to greet you in the lobby. I felt safe throughout my stay here.

There is a small patio between the room and the plunge pool. They provide you with a hammock for that area. It is also lit for nighttime use. The water was clean. It was a large room. It had large shower that has a full length window to a garden area. No one can see you, just in case you were wondering. Service - even before we arrived. I contacted the hotel through whats App. I needed help with the booking. Alex was wonderful and helped me every step of the way. He went beyond his job description to help me. He even helped me set up a romantic gesture for our anniversary. He helped with transportation. He even checked on us when we had not arrived to the hotel yet. Luigi helped check us in. Always asked how our day was going and gave us suggestions on where to eat. The grounds are monitored by a security guard at night. So we felt safe enough to hang out at the beach at night. The pool is also way too cold and I didn't want to get in. The adult pool is amazing. There is an ice machine which you won't find at most hotels on the island. It's far from town but I knew that and in the morning it's very peaceful. Afternoon and night music is blaring. Staff are pretty friendly and helpful. You wouldn't think it is a resort looking at it from the outside. Okay well I was still wing a little optimistic about the place. We arrived and it is is all open. Nothing glamorous about the entrance. There is one check in desk with one person. The wait was long to get checked in and to our room. It is old you can tell but for me that's not too important as long as the customer service is on point. We got shown to our room and the room was so refreshing it was cold and clean. The mini bar was all inclusive big plus. We got the room facing the pool. Very nice view the pool is pretty big. Not so new but still nice. Food: It usually is buffet style but that was closed and that sucked!!!! You had to order off a menu and the staff wasn't quite on point with the service only but a few were. In the morning they come to you with a cart full of fruit yogurt oats granola and pan dulce sweet bread. However they don't announce what else they have on the cart. We missed out on homemade juices. Pretty upset by that. We only knew because we saw someone drinking a green cleanse drink and so we asked. The food from the ceviche hut was good it's not heavy just right. But our server had the worst service. Was a little on the flustered side maybe overworked but he also was knowledgeable on the areas around the hotel which he should be. Staff: There a few good nice ones and the other few just plain rude. The hotel lacked a lot of supplies and food. No ingredients for mojitos, no straws, no plastic cups, or other things that a hotel should carry. They close all the bars and restaurants at 7! Really what is that. However the room service staff was great they went above and beyond. We complained and the only thing to make us feel better they put flowers on the floors maybe on our anniversary or honeymoon. But that was not good enough. I would not return to this place again nor will I recommend it to friends. This is more for older couples who want no noise or a party seen. It is a quiet place to relax.

The sushi rice was mushy, sweet, and vinegary. The fire dessert tasted bad. The coconut ice cream was actually okay. So was the cracker thing they brought first. The fish from the fish and chips at the beach club was the juciest fish I ever had. The ceviche from the beach club was almost perfect. I drank the juice at the end. The drinks to get are the Pina Colada and the Miami Vice. The breakfast food from Sabor is pretty good. They don't have good gluten free substitutions. The bread that I got when I asked for it tasted weird and was hard. The yogurt toppings they have in the jars next to the cereal are stale. The parfait cups are good. They had beef fajita one day and it was amazing. The orange juice is good and fresh. Their poached eggs are acceptable. And I always got a hash brown. At the pool bar/restaurant, the nachos were perfect. We got to do the Mexican dinner at the beach club. It was not good. It was just bland and boring. I do think the all-inclusive is worth it. I jumped to food so let me go back to check-in and rooms. Check-in was kind of annoying bc we waited 30 minutes to get helped. They have 3 computers and some of the other guests can be pretty entitled, asking for a lot of different things and what not. They also didn't offer anything to make up for that even though we commented on it. There was a bellboy handing out champagne and wet towels. The room was pretty nice. It could use some rugs but otherwise pretty modern. We got an ocean view and there is a huge living room area that we didn't need. I would have liked to try room service but didn't get the chance. I don't know if anyone else mentioned this in their reviews but the hotel's beach club is on Playa Centro even though the name has Norte in it. That seems like a lawsuit (Mexico?) waiting to happen. So if you want to see the nice Norte beach, you need walk through a few other places on the beach. It can get tricky bc the beach cuts off at the corner. But a lot of people were doing it. There was a very rude gringo at the pool one time who was yelling at a staff worker. Nobody stepped in which pissed me off. I walked over to the staff worker to offer my complaint and support. I saw the gringo around in the days after but he didn't act that way again. But I sure was mean mugging him.

He was professional, genuinely apologetic, and handled the conversation the way a hospitality manager should. He listened, acknowledged the issues, and de-escalated appropriately. It's clear he's been trained well. I want to give credit where it's due. My complaints about Andres stand, but Javier restored some of my faith that the hotel's leadership understands how guests should be treated. I really wanted to like Privilege Aluxes. Isla Mujeres is beautiful and we were looking forward to a relaxing few days. Unfortunately, this hotel made that difficult at nearly every turn. We booked a four-night stay and were placed in a suite that shared a wall with what I can only assume was a nightclub. The music was deafening, going until 4am one night and around midnight on others. Not exactly the peaceful beach vacation we had in mind. We were also told a complimentary bottle of liquor would be delivered to our room. It never came, and we never bothered following up because by that point we had bigger concerns. At check-in, we let the front desk know my wife has a gluten intolerance. They wrote it down. That was the last time anyone seemed to remember. Every restaurant on the property tried to serve her items with gluten. Staff could not tell us what was safe to eat and confidently told her certain dishes were fine when they absolutely were not. She spent most of the trip eating chips and guacamole because she was genuinely afraid of getting sick. For a resort that specifically asks about allergies, the lack of communication between the front desk and the kitchen was honestly dangerous. The most frustrating part came when we tried to extend our stay by one night. The acting manager, Andres, quoted us $800. I showed him the hotel's own website listing the same suite at $662 and a standard room at $451. He shrugged and told us we should book online if it was cheaper because he could not help us. So we booked through Expedia. The next morning we were told we had to leave the property for three hours between checkout and check-in, despite this being a continuous reservation at the same hotel. We could see rooms listed as available online. When we brought this up, he claimed nothing was open. It felt like retaliation for not paying his inflated rate. No offer of late checkout. No early check-in. Not even a suggestion to use the pool or beach while we waited. Just be out by noon. I calmly explained that our experience had not been great and that this could be a chance to turn things around. He was completely uninterested. On top of all this, the bartender at the Playa Norte beach club was rude every time we interacted with him. The service overall felt undertrained and indifferent. I do not write reviews like this often, but I would hate for someone else to spend this kind of money and walk away feeling the way we did. There are other hotels on Isla Mujeres that will treat you better.

Updated Review: I…read morerecently came back to the MIA Reef hotel and I was honestly quite satisfied this time with my stay. Over the last few months, the hotel has had some significant upgrades, including adding in a Starbucks, upgrading the old small bar, and just improving overall quality of the hotel. I will say, though that it is sad to see that recent storms have destroyed the hotel's private beach. There is not much space to spread out and relax here so we would leave our stuff at the hotel and walk over to the public beach and enjoy the beach there. We have also gone during various months and the best months to enjoy the clean water without seaweed is definitely during the late winter months to the early spring months. The sarcasm seaweed can get overwhelming and leave a funky after smell. Also, it is very important to note that the island does have a sanctuary for birds that arrive late spring, and stay through the summer and fall. So if you book during the summer months, you will be overwhelmed with these loud birds that nest on the island and HOTEL. Aside from that, the hotel is such a great place to stay for a couple days. The food is still average. There's nothing really crazy, however, we would always go downtown and get some amazing street food or dine at the restaurants down there. Again, because there was upgrades, I would definitely come back again ! Also, highly recommend that when you book a stay here you book transportation through the hotel that will get you from the airport to the ferry and then the ferry to the hotel and then the same back to the airport. Very simple, convenient and easy to use.

Due to this, I ended up having to pay more for a lower quality room. I still have not seen my original charge refunded to my credit card.
