I was expecting a sit-down spot with hearty meals, but instead, it was more Imbiss style, with a lot of the food being pre-prepared stuff you could order. I initially thought about getting one of the rice dishes, but I saw someone else's and it didn't look particularly inspiring. Instead, I went with the soup of the day, which was a lentil soup. It was warm but somewhat bland (as I find tends to be the case with soup just about anywhere, sadly). I also ordered a side of bolani without the yogurt sauce, and I am pleased to report that it was tasty... just as I've always remembered bolani to be. My lunch companion had a small salad, a pakora, and a samosa. He thought the latter two were not very flavorful until he added the chili chutney sauce provided and that definitely gave them a kick. The person working (the owner?) was a very friendly man, though he did seem a bit overwhelmed with the lunch rush. Very vegetarian friendly, though not overly so for vegans. Fridays and Saturdays are also when you can get the Maultaschen, which are supposed to be great. Overall, I think it's a good place to grab a light snack, particularly if you've not had Afghan food before.

The sampler included four kabobs - one chicken, one lamb, and two ground lamb along with some grilled tomatoes and pita bread. Each kabob was grilled perfectly. As for the mint tea, we loved how it included tons of fresh mint. Service was solid, although a bit slow and they did initially forget my beer. The place is extremely clean and prices were reasonable given the portions. They also have wifi and accept card. I would consider going back on a future Berlin visit.

Usually Kebabs are the best way of judging a Persian restaurant as terms such as "fall of the bone tender" or "melt in mouth tender" are synonymous with the Persian style of charcoal BBQ. Having said this it is also important to mention that kebabs are "special occasion foods" and as such perhaps not the best indicator or presentation of what the day-to-day home style Persian cuisine is all about. Sadly not much of a buzz can be made out of the Shayan's kebabs as they only happen to be OK meaning juicy and tender but not melt in mouth or fall of the bone tender. What is however vibrating at Shayan are the casseroles/stews. Among the slow(er) cook dishes, in fact more day-to-day and home style Persian cuisine, a definite gem is the walnut pomegranate lamb casserole. A dish made at Shayan with great depth as well as sweet and sour balance. Another great dish, however only if you into okra, is the okra stew that can also be served as a vegetarian option. Another well balanced dish, in terms of sweet vs sour, to gather around is the spinach and plum lamb stew. In summery I must admit the most memorable thing about Shayan, in my opinion, is their knowledge of how to make well-balanced sweet and sour dishes that are not very common on all other Persian restaurants menu.
